is it plausible that they may drop the data plan by $10 to make room for the data plan for the new iphone? maybe something like this?

$30 - New iPhone
$20 - iPhone 3G
$10 - Orignal iPhone

i can't see them trying to get away with charging more than $30 a month for the data plan for the new iphone. if the data plan was $40 for it, there's no way in hell i'd get it, that's just ridiculous.

We would all love an additional $10 a month back in our pockets, but if someone holding out on getting an iPhone because of an additional $10, then, in my opinion, they do not deserve an iPhone.

You sir, fail... miserably. The University of Michigan wants to disown you right now!

For what you get $30.00 is rediculous. I won't pay that. I would love to switch to ATT for 3G speeds but it's hard to beat my iPhone 3G on t-mobile with an unlimited (EDGE) data plan for 7 dollars a month.

Yeah. Drop it to 20 for the data and take the $10.00 off the monthly price (for a total of $20.00 less per month) and then ATT will have a new customer. It would still be more expensive than my t-mobile plan but the differences would be worth it (visual voicemail, 3G, broader coverage)

........any discount with the monthly pricing plan would help. I wanted an iPhone since they came out, but the increase in cost compared to my current basic plan is too much for my monthly budget.

That still sucks really bad when you consider how much they charge for text messaging.

I wish they would give you the option for something like the "Pick your Plan" pricing structure with contract phones. Its really nice not having to pay extra for text messaging since both minutes and texts get subtracted from your monthly balance with PYP thanks to it being a money balance rather than a minute balance. I dont have to pay for a bunch of minutes I'll barely use just so I can pay even more for text messaging, Im not going to give that up for a phone until theres a cheap plan with text messaging included.

A whole $10
These pricing structures are too expensive for a phone, but as long as people are paying it ATT will charge it.

When we get out of this recession I bet the price goes back up.

Ill stick with my Razr until monthly pricing gets into the sane category.

I dont deserve an iPhone;)

Love the iPhone; hate the web

I use a smartphone only for its ability to sync my contacts' info and my calendar. Basically, it's a combination of my old Palm Pilot and a "regular" cellphone. I pay only for "normal" cellphone use.

Web apps? No thank you. So am I precluded from an iPhone purchased from AT&T? I guess so because I'm not paying for web access I don't need nor will use.

So I'll stick with Alltel and my eBay-purchased Motorola Q until Apple & AT&T decide to attack the rest of the market - those of us who love Apple products but think the whole "web app" nonsense is just that: Nonsense.

You realize Alltel is now Verizon right?
I loved Alltel:(

I sold my iPhone because of the monthly bill, and I am considering selling my wife's as well. I would consider a newer model for -$20ish dollars on the monthly bill.

The fact that Wal-Mart has not lived up to expectations does not surprise me at all. It should have never been done in the first place.

Most importantly its a dilution of the Apple brand.

Apple is symbolic of high-end, and high margins. Wal-Mart is the polar opposite: Anything and everything just to save a few pennies, regardless of the consequences.

Second, Wal-Mart could not add value. In this case that would mean a lower price, because lower prices is Wal-Mart's value proposition.

Why would anyone go to Wal-Mart (or any retailer for that matter, that does not have expertise in wireless) when they can go to any Apple or AT&T store and deal with someone who really knows the product line and the industry as a whole?

The simple answer is: They wouldn't.

Wrong! WalMart is in almost every town that has 10,000 or more people. There are many states that don't even have an apple store and as far as AT&T retail stores go many would have to drive a hundred miles or more to get to one of those. You people who live is metropolitan areas have no idea what its like to live in a rual area.

Doesn't help those of us with iPhones on family plans. Drop the cost of the data plan by $10. Yes, I KNOW it ain't gonna happen. Just adding my opinion to the group.

Of course sales don't meet expectations at WalMart. Bottom feeders shop there for their teeth so one shouldn't expect many iPhone purchases from folk who take public transportation to get there.

You're a snob. Get a clue, there is nothing wrong with taking public transportation.

Go to the WalMart parking lot and count the number of cars. Now go to an Apple store and count the numbr of cars. Percentage wise I'll bet more cusstomers who go to an apple store use public transportation more than WalMart customers.

Seing as they might still be working on the plan rates (from what BGR is saying) - maybe $30 is the plus tethering rate?

bigchief - that might be in part due to store location :)

Its more like..

$30 - 3Mb/s Access
$20 - 1.5Mb/s Access
$15 - Original iPhone (EDGE)

But yea, the idea is that wireless broadband is slowly getting fast enough to segment into multiple tiers. The $30 plan should be fast enough to stream audio and video to your phone (not that AT&T wants to allow that), the middle tier is good enough for streaming audio.

I'd still love to see $1/day tethering feature added. Use the AT&T app to add tethering for 24 hours and then the iPhone could tether to other devices over bluetooth.

That's right. Drop the price of data especially those who don't even live in a 3g area. I have AT&T DSL for my home computers that cost less than $30 a month. If AT&T doesn't start giving breaks on people with their phone data plans who already have their DSL I'll probaly go with cable.

still way too much

I'm currently paying $75 after tax for two lines of iPhones (2G) for 700 minutes with unlimited internet (i get only about 200kbps but its enough for me, and heck I can ever tether) and 400 texts with T-mobile.
T-mobile's service may not be the best, but a 50% discount over comparable AT&T plan is hard to resist.

this sounds very plausible, especially if they do video conferencing on it, it would HAVE to be closer to 30$ to cover that expense, with like 60 minutes of vc built in.

I pay 10$ already on the original (including the 200 SMS) and 49$ for 1000 minutes, so I will do everything I can to keep my plan as an upgrade comes due.

Wow this thread is full of Apple self-righteous snobs, with the exception of a few sensible people. Don't demean and insult others just because of where they shop, go to school, what their budget is please. You're just being a insensitive d!ck.
