What are you people doing.? How can you so willingly pay AT&T rates just to own an iPhone. Here some food for thought.. I have an iPhone on T-Mobile & get Unlimited Minutes, Internet Access & 200 text for  $42.00  per month, after my 2nd phone discount & student discount. Anyone who can justify paying AT&T the rates they ask must have "More Money Than Sense" & deserve what they get. AT&T knows that there are other cells companies with better plans but just count on you impulsive iPhone buyers to pay their rates.. Sad really how some people wilingly waste their hard earned money.. Hopefully when Verizon gets their iPhone AT&T will be forced to lower their rates even further, but the number of people who continue to sign up will determine that. If activations decline then AT&T will be forced to get competitive.

Why would it drop? Verizon is the same price on smartphones - and you HAVE to have data on all models but 2 right now (the Centro & _____ can opt out of data). If your contract is from prior to last November you can drop it on other phones (with a fight).

I can't see Verizon helping dropping the monthly price.... especially not Verizon. Carriers haven't figure out that a lot of people paying slightly less might net them more money that few paying a lot.

Your point? I doubt it would be as severe as 250MB. Probably 1GB, 1/5 of the current soft limit. I just checked my usage and I have used ... 38MB. Granted, this is on an original iPhone with EDGE speed, but I can't fathom how to use 5GB on a mobile device in a month. If one of the new GPS turn-by-turn apps uses a constant data connection, OK, maybe. But I'm all for cheaper and limited.

I have used 1.8GB in 3 weeks and I am not THAT much of a heavy user, and I don't do tethering.

1. Enjoy your edge speed data transfer on T-mobile.
2. Go check out a BB plan on Verizon, you'll notice that AT&T's Iphone plan isn't more expensive than Verizon.

The $10 price drop would be great but I'm more concerned about how much I'll be able to get for my 1 year old 16GB after I purchase the new phone. There will probably be a huge surplus of the current model on the used market.

Maybe I'm being cynical and should go find a unicorn to pet but I'm thinking the $10 price cut would just be a cruel PR scheme. They'd find a way to get it back like jacking up the price of the data or the SMS plan... soon to be SMS/MMS plan.

First rule of cell phones: assume whatever phone you buy will be worthless by the time your contract is up. That said, at least w/ an iPhone it defaults to a Touch rather than a totally worthless brick like most old cellphones.

I don't know where you live, but around here T-Mobile's service blows. Maybe you should go from other people's perspectives every once in while. I wouldn't pay $42 a month for crappier service and slower speed as compared to ATT. And I don't even have an iPhone, yet.

If you don't want to commit,

Cheaper plan is t-mobile pay-as-you-go and sidekick plan assuming that you don't call ($30 and don't call). I think it can be 3g.

The cheapest plan is at&t pay-as-you-go, 15c/min plan and buy 100mb medianet for $19.99 (and don't call) This may be 3g, but didn't try, so I don't know. For EDGE, it works fine.

I think after 2.2.1, it became increasingly difficult to unlock the iphone 1st and 2nd gen. You have to admit, once in a while when you update iphone software, it fails and can't be used for a while. So either using the newer version takes more time (till you figure out workaround) or updating makes the iphone unuseable for a while. At least that was my experience. Not impossible, but so much hassle, I think.

Also t-mobile service is not always the best, EDGE is quite slower than other carrier. And it's not fair to consider your student discount, because not everyone can get it. If you look at at&t premier, the monthly service cost for iphone 3g is already $57 and I bet many here already got that.

It's about time..

Being an original 1st gen iPhone owner, I refused to upgrade. It's not because I didn't want a new 3G iPhone, but I refuse to pay AT&T the extra $15/month added charge for 3G service. It's a nice service, but it doesn't justify the $15/month service increase. I use my phone to make calls and access my calendar and address book. I occasionally use it to surf the net. Now, if they can only throw in tethering, I'll be the first in line and be the most loyal AT&T customer. Actually, I've had AT&T for several years now. I might even consider going back to AT&T DSL... Let's do this!

What AT&T really should do is make the data plan optional like just about all there other phones, very simple and means more buisness. Then I would buy one for sure.

A Step in the Right Direction

This is awesome news. :D

Let's hope they make SMS a little more affordable too!

This is good news. I am thinking about getting the next iphone esp if it gets a slingplayer and hulu player apps. I may have to jail break it because apple/at+t cripple the iphone's capabilities by limiting what you can do via 3g.

We would all love an additional $10 a month back in our pockets, but if someone holding out on getting an iPhone because of an additional $10, then, in my opinion, they do not deserve an iPhone.

What an incredibly stupid comment.. Why stop at $10 dollars/month (which btw translates into $240 over the time of the contract) ??

"If you're holding out on getting that BMW i325 because of extra $8K, you don't deserve a BMW"..

That would be pretty good if it actually happens, but over the past 6 years or so, AT&T increased its $40 per month plan from 400 minutes to 450 minutes and added rollover. I doubt there will be a %25 price drop all of a sudden.

I work (pretty much) part time, and the biggest hurdle for me on the iPhone is just the lack of choice. I don't use that many minutes.. but I can't get something small like 100 minutes a month.

$10 off the service plan (especially considering how small AT&T's 3G area is). Is a decent start, but give us more options.. and it will get to the younger market more (Which I rarely ever see, unless their parents pay the bills)

Ah, if it were always just $10/month. Thing is it's never $10/month. It's $10/month here, $5/month there. A very stupid comment indeed.

If your iPhone is close to your only monthly bill, you really need to shutup about how $10/month doesn't matter. Throw in a mortgage or rent, a power bill, a little TV, clothes, food, gas, a car payment -- holy hell, stop me. As I'm looking at all these things for buying a house, the $10/month saved per month would get me local channels and DVR service on Dish Network. Most people could also get a day's worth of food out of that, if not more depending on the day. That'll also fill my tank up for a week.

I don't care how AT&T does this, but it needs to be done. It especially needs to be an option for people who live nowhere near a 3G area. You just don't use the phone as much if you're using the 200k-ish speeds of EDGE. Half of my use is in WiFi areas, so I really don't use $30 worth. Many of you obviously do, which is fine. This is the same deal with why netbooks are gaining in popularity but most of us still love full-scale computers.

Who votes negative for a price reduction on a monthly bill? Any of those people want to give me an extra $10/month?

The reason for this is to be more competitive than Verizon. It's all about price and how many people are willing to straddle themselves with a @$70 dollar bill compared to those @$60.

$60's a lot easier to swallow than $70...

I have noticed that myself. I thought as cell phones got more popular, maybe they'd start dropping plans down to $30 and $20. No, they just started throwing more stuff in that not everybody uses. I like rollover and more minutes, but I'd rather have a $30 option with maybe 200 minutes and rollover. Yes, I know I can get prepaid for less than that, but you can't use an iPhone without at least a $40/month voice plan. The only thing for me is I've got my parents on my account, and it's basically another $30 for their two phones. They probably don't use it worth that much, but the coverage is much better than if they used Virgin Mobile.

They will probably have pricing for texting seperately and pricing for MMSing seperately. $5 for texting and $10 for MMSing.

That's just it, they'll get their $ no matter. Recent discovery made by way of a friend is that the data plan for verizon is $15 for the same plan.

Instead of dropping the price by $10 per month, why don't they just let current 3G owners buy the new iPhone at the subsidized price and have them sign a new 2-year contract? This will probably make AT&T more money in the long-run, especially if they lose their exclusivity in a year.

1. That does absolutely nothing for original iPhone owners and people who don't even have an iPhone yet.
2. You still have a year of payments to go until the subsidy on your 3G is paid back to ATT.
