I've gone through two iPhones, 1st gen and a 3G. I live in Miami, travel around Florida and to D.C. often for my job and I don't get that many dropped calls.

As for the tethering... I give AT&T until 2011 before I call for the iPhone to expand to T-Mobile. :D

Why is it unreasonable? Don't I pay $30 for unlimited data? Why does it matter how I use it?
I'm going to assume your question is serious and answer it. I'm a heavy data user and I hardly ever break 300MB per month of 3G data on my iPhone. On my MacBook, using my Verizon 3G USB dongle, it's closer to 4GB per month. The kind and size of data pushed and pulled through a desktop or laptop has a much higher potential than what can come through a phone, even an iPhone. I would expect, at the least, an additional $30 per month to tether and an end to unlimited data. Would expect the US industry-standard 5GB cap for tethered data. I'm not saying I'd like it - just what I would expect as a reasonable charge/restriction.

I gotta say that it is about time that AT&T is thinking for once about their network and not allowing tethering before they make their network stronger. I have the iPhone but I'm sick of the dropped calls and horrible service. My favorite quote of mine is "AT&T; Lowering the bar" because when I need service the most in the areas that I'm in the most, NOTHING! For that reason I am testing Verizons network out with the Droid Incredible for the next 2+ Weeks do determine what is a better fit for me.

There is a universal gsm/cdma chip. Apple could do one better by designing their own. Never say never. Things change, especially with Apple.
LOL at myself! Yes, never say never!

I just don't know that Apple is going to want to bake in a radio chip just for Sprint 4G that isn't going to have application in the rest of the world. Not with everyone else going to the LTE 4G protocols.

And as financially fragile as I think Sprint is (and as disgusted as I've been with their customer service in past years), I will say that I'm intrigued by their 4G Overdrive WiFi sharing device.

Of course, it's kind of a moot point for me as 4G won't show up here in flyover country for a few years (not Sprint's or anyone else's).

I just don't care if they charge or not, honestly what i wish is that tethering were available because for some reason i feel robbed of a function of my phone that was part of my decision making before i purchase it. like i was given a sales pitch about the iPhone 3Gs having the ability to tether but after i purchase and I am willing to pay for service, O o no tethering sorry

Oh, I'm sorry, I missed the memo were AT&T is charity and not a company.
If another carrier could offer it for free (i.e. bundled in with the rest of their service) it could turn out to be a huge competitive advantage.

(AT&T didn't drop their rates for unlimited voice minutes because they wanted to, they did it because they needed to match the competition.)

If there is a downside to this for consumers, it's that AT&T's chief competitor is Verizon, who is infamous for nickle-and-dimeing their customers for all manner of options and features.

It really is a shame that Sprint seems to be on their proverbial financial deathbed.

They offer it on other phones....

I'm more concerned about the surge the 3G iPads will have... AT&T just needs to ball up here.

Thank goodness it costs so much that I’d never use it anyway

(And frankly, neither would most people. I question how much extra load this would REALLY put on the network. WiFi is so common anyway, in the places most people take laptops. And it’s faster.)

I'm more concerned about the surge the 3G iPads will have... AT&T just needs to ball up here.

Or the 4th-gen iPhone, or the ongoing massive sales of iPhones in general... all these things should dwarf any effect that a few tethering users would have. I don’t buy that excuse.

and is AT&T actually actively updating its network to offer this service?

I smell BS all over this.

And I blame Apple, if iPhone were on another network, I will guarantee you AT&T will offer tethering the next day

Exactly...thats why exclusivity deals are terrible....the consumer loses

World phone.

They could even just do it for one year until LTE catches up in order to be relevant in 4G.

Or another solution is one band for voice and another for data much like having 3G and wifi.

There are solutions.

The one I would personally love to see is a dual band world iPhone.
Jobs could say this is the next iPhone and it will run on any wireless network that wants to sell it so long as they meet a list of standards. Things like no telco branding.
The wireless companies would be tripping over themselves to compete and everyone would win. Companies like verizon would also be forced to accept apple standards on things like branding without any negotiations because every single one of their competitors would have iPhone.

This would be a win for consumers due to competition bringing better prices plans and features, good for wireless companies having the hottest most popular smartphone and ultimately for Apple who would sell even millions upon millions more iPhones. Anyone in the world that wants the iPhone could have it on whatever network that meets apples standards.

This is how iPhone can take over the world. I see it as the logical next step in the evolution.

It's all possible. Apple innovates and finds new ways to do things where others have failed. There have been world phones for years just like there have been tablets for years and mp3 players before iPods. There has never been a world phone that is the iPhone.
It would be huge and set competitors back a few years again (they have pretty much finally caught up to iPhone)
It's the perfect time for apple to leap way ahead again.
It would all be cemented further with an in house designed world phone chip that no one else could use.
I expect something huge and radical from Apple this year. This is what I want to see them do. If they disappoint I'll be a little sad and maybe buy an evo or something.

The iPhone is popular enough to set the terms for all carriers while negotiating with none of them.
Apple could toss it out there and they would all knock themselves silly fighting over it. Meet Apple standards or no iPhone for you! With it available to their competitors they would play ball. All with zero negotiations.

The exclusive AT&T deal served it's purpose in launching the iPhone for Apple but it can only hurt themselves, consumers, and Apple at this point.

I would be completely happy and excited if at&t gave us wifi tethering speed limited to about 200k. This would "protect" their network but still allow customers to access the internet on their laptops for "emergencies". iPad customers are getting true unlimited for $30 a month. Is at&t telling us iPhone customers they couldn't do something similar to what I suggest for the $20 we're paying?

Solution:

1. Get rid of the "Unlimited" data plan.
2. Introduce reasonable data plans e.g. 1GB, 2GB, 5GB, 10GB
3. Allow users to tether using the new plans.

This is how it's done here in Australia.

This way it's your data and you can choose what to do with it.

Now I don't believe in a god, but I'm literally praying that Tmobile gets the iPhone. I'm really hoping that their upgrade to the 21 mbps network will get them the contract. Wouldn't tethering be awesome on 21 mbps? (if the phone could handle that)

Infineon's HSPA+ 21Mbit baseband is due to be produced next year. All iPhones have used Infineon modems.

Their new HSUPA baseband is now in mass production - I'd think that's more likely.

If T-Mobile switch on the CPC-DRX feature of HSPA+, the iPhone gets double the battery life while push notifications are turned on - THAT will get T-Mobile the contract (and the 50c 1700MHz power amplifier in the iPhone)!!

That is a good solution but there are better ones from sprint and verizon now.
An app that turns your phone into a hotspot for free.
And Rogers in Canada for free.

The only reason AT&T is doing nothing is because they don't have to. They have iPhone users by the balls with their exclusive deal. That's why it needs to go, it sucks and has been milked for all it's worth.

iPad customers are getting true unlimited for $30 a month.

It's not truly unlimited when you're getting a reduced quality version of content when compared to using the iPad with that same SIM card put in a MiFi.

It's not truly unlimited when you can't download apps bigger than 20MB.

Tell the customer how much they can use and let them do what they want! Get rid of the silly restrictions and set a data limit.

I LOVE Apple, but I really find it hard to believe Tim Cook when he says they aren't convinced that a multi-carrier model is the best option in the US! ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Do they understand how many people on Verizon have been dying for an iPhone for years??? Come on! If they really believe that and it is not just a PR answer to protect AT&T for now then WOW!

I haven't personally had problems with AT&T where I live, but not having a feature that almost all others had at launch about a YEAR AGO is so beyond pathetic I can barely comprehend it!

It makes me worry about the iChat camera in the new iPhone. Will it only be WIFI? Will it be 3G but AT&T won't support it? Or if they do will they add a charge for it? I'm a little nervous!

I honestly think that the longer Apple takes to get on Verizon, the more they are going to get hurt by Android! They better get on the ball STAT!

Lol, I'm just breaking company protocol by piggy backing an airport express when I need a quick connection, or download.

The iPhone does most of what I need on the go but there are those times when it's not enough...

Even if AT&T capped it (within reason).

(for the crowd following the south park censorship issue, maybe we could get those radicals to "ask politely" to have AT&T allow iPhone tethering... We all know it worked to get comedy central in a choke hold...)
