Thanks

The problem would be the same problem for all Verizon data use - you wouldn't be able to tether and talk at the same time. It's a limitation, as I understand it, of the CDMA technology that is used on their cell network. To me this would render tethering useless if you couldn't use data while also talking on the phone.

Thanks. I was wondering about CDMA.

4G is the future and it is here now, though still rolling out. I see no reason for Apple to not team up with Sprint with a 4G/3G capable iPhone. No reason for Apple to stay exclusively with ATT. They would be stupid to not move forward.
4G is here now and it is the way forward.

4G will be a key selling point this year and Apple needs to be the first with the hottest 4G phone.

The iPhone stuck on AT&T is no longer good enough. This isn't 2008. Things have changed.

included

I said other carriers, not all of them. Also, there is no fine print on the iPhone unlimited plan, it is an unlimited plan with no 5GB limit. The 5GB limit is a cap for Laptop Connect cards or data tethering enabled phones.

Also, Rogers charges much more for that +1GB data plan don't they?

1GB is included with the iPhone package...unless you go for the cheaper pack which I think is something like 40 bucks and comes with 500MB.

I pay 90 bucks for 1000mins, 6GB data, MY5 nationwide, visual voicemail, unlimited txts and mms. Not too bad IMHO.

My mistake, I came across some blog post a while back that mentioned a fine print cap on data plans on AT&T. Guess you can't believe all thats on the web - especially whats mentioned in blogs. :p

Inflated your hopes with falsehood. Sprint isn't getting it either. If any one gets it, is T-Mobile due to them being already GSM.

The hardware change from GSM really isn't a huge issue to them. Sprint would fit with apples brand image as well. If they basically combine the Sprint Overdrive and an iPhone they would have a killer product!:apple:

When tethering or using data, if a call comes in, your internet access is suspended until you get off the phone.
Seems a lot better to me than AT&T where I get lousy coverage even within the few square miles of supposedly 3G coverage. If you're using EDGE, AT&T has the same limitation but worse. If you're using data with EDGE, incoming calls go straight to voicemail.

Easy mistake. They charge for Visual Voicemail?!

No they wouldn't Sprint is a sinking ship. They loose more customers than what they attract. Also, it would be much easier for Apple just to switch the radio modes to allow the 1700 MHz band T-Mobile uses for 3G and allow the iPhone with them.

MiFi is AN answer until AT&T gets its act together

I bought a 64 GB iPad - not waiting for 3G - because of MiFi. I can connect up to 5 devices to it and a sole data plan is much cheaper than a "tethering" plan. It is also much cheaper than the USB sticks.

Here in Oz, OPTUS allows unlimited tethering... all in my monthly rate - plus unlimited calls to any phone in Australia and no charge for incoming calls.

I know we are a bit backward in so many ways - we think that the beach is more important than some days of work (highest number of national and state holidays) and we drive in the left side of the road but at least we have our telecommunications kind of figured out. We also have more than one telco that we can buy our iPhones from or you buy it unlocked and use it with whomever you wish. Now isn't that novel.

BTW, I had AT&T when I lived in Hawaii and they suck (kind of like Adobe). Period. Full Stop. :D

You know, I would gladly pay AT&T for legal tethering. But since they make it impossible, I have to jailbreak and do it over their network anyway, but for free. This does not make sense to me.
I would also pay for the option of tethering, esp. an iPad-style plan where it could be added and removed as needed. IMO, pay-as-you-go WiFi is too spotty and potentially insecure.

As it is, I never upgraded past 3.0.1 so I can still tether using the benm hack. I don't need tethering often, but the times I've needed to it's been a huge help.

BS!

It's not like the people who are looking to tether will simultaneously be surfing the Internet on their phone. Tethering will not increase traffic accept got the additional people who buy iPhones once it's allowed. And why would they care about that?

You're missing the point though. The next iPhone WILL be 4G.:D

Not as a separate feature, it comes in a 20$$ bundle with unlimited MMS and SMS, Caller ID with a NumberNaming feature (but apparently the names only work for contacts that are in Ontario and Quebec  ), VV (on top of the included call-your-own-number voicemail) and "WhoCalled"...which to me seems redundant since you have caller ID.

Man, I almost feel sorry for the AT&T iPhone users.

I've been happily tethering since last October on an officially unlocked (bought in Oz), non-jailbroken, 3.1.3 iPhone 3Gs. Worth paying extra for an unlocked phone I say.

Interesting, every carrier has it's oopsies.

I disagree. The biggest black eye is when I'm on my way home and have three failed calls on my iPhone. I say fix that, before you allow tethering. Oh, I live in Las Vegas so it isn't a small town and it isn't a town where tall buildings are a reason for dropped/failed calls.
You know that voice and data use different protocols, that a voice call on a GSM phone isn't impacted by using the data network?

Sprint and Verizon have a hot feature with phone as a modem and it is luring a lot of iPad wifi users....

...iPhone on Sprint would be the biggest news of the summer.
Not only is the Sprint 3G network incompatible with the iPhone and the rest of the world, the same holds true for their 4G network. There will never be a Sprint iPhone.

If Sprint gets the iPhone they will add millions of customers so them losing customers now means nothing. They are also getting the biggest baddest 4G phone known, HTC EVO. Sprint is changing
Also, lose not loose.

There is a universal gsm/cdma chip. Apple could do one better by designing their own. Never say never. Things change, especially with Apple.

Now I don't believe in a god, but I'm literally praying that Tmobile gets the iPhone. I'm really hoping that their upgrade to the 21 mbps network will get them the contract. Wouldn't tethering be awesome on 21 mbps? (if the phone could handle that)

This is the biggest black eye for AT&T going. (Certainly not the only - but the biggest.)

I would never expect it to be free. That's not a reasonable expectation.

Why is it unreasonable? Don't I pay $30 for unlimited data? Why does it matter how I use it?

Almost every carrier that allows it charges for it, why should AT&T not charge for the service?

To gain customers? Show they aren't Jack***es?

You would most likely see actual speeds of 6.8 Mb/s assuming your in T-Mobile's 21 Mb/s network and Apple allows the iPhone on them.

I would most welcome that.

Oh, I'm sorry, I missed the memo were AT&T is charity and not a company.
