As soon as I stop getting 10+ dropped calls a day with 5 bars of 3G, I'll be ecstatic about this news.

And yet we're stuck on EDGE in my area! This kind of news is actually upsetting to me. Other parts of the country going to 4G and I'm stuck with very slow internet for my iPhone. And I'm stuck with first gen. iPhone too as it makes no sense to get new phone and have a higher data plan I can't take advantage on. BS.

What area do you live? If you live in bumblef*ck area with low population density, I actually agree with AT&T strategy to not bother when they have huge problems in high population areas to deal...

If you want 3g, switch to Verizon or something as they have better 3g coverage for out of the way areas.

Holy crap, why does it take so long for ATT to roll out 3G all over America? I mean Verizon did it in a shorter time frame.. Most people don't have the luxury to live in one of the huge cities where they first roll out new network technologies.

because it makes perfect sense to upgrade the old parts of the network to obsolete tech only to upgrade them again later

What I'm seeing here is a complete lack of a fall back plan. If you are traveling with an iPhone 3GS today it will go form 3G to Edge. But with this plan in place you might be on 4G in some areas and drop all the way back down to Edge since 3G was never properly deployed.

You really need good 3G coverage before you even consider deploying 4G.

So wait a minute: were the "exclusivity ending in 2010" rumors that started springing up recently actually any more reliably-sourced than the "5-year contract" sources that were all over the place in early 2007?

Well, it started out as a five-year mission - boldly going where no cell phone had gone before, but it got cancelled due to low ratings; even though it had a cult following.

Wait......wrong geek reference.

:D

Good to hear, service has been better here in san jose over the last year but still patches of bad reception. Looking forward to an improved network.

Well, that is snotty. You are not cool if you move about, drive anywhere, can't just sit inertly WiFi coffeehouses all day having video chats with another slacker.

When the iPad comes out, I am going to be purchasing one without a doubt. But, I might wait for the rumored price drop. The sim is unlocked and no contracts which I am totally ok with.

However, if Apple resigns the exclusive agreement with AT&T I will NOT be upgrading to the next iPhone. I am going to switch to Android because I am sick and tired of the slow speeds of teh AT&T network. It continues to get worse and the number of dropped calls in San Francisco is outragous.

I am also sick of using that "Mark the spot app" because I have to use it 2 to 3 times a day somedays. Whats worse is that customer service can't see those submissions so they don't help with getting a credit on the account. That is very aggrevating.

I am glad to see what AT&T is moving towards LTE, but its going to be too late by the time it rolls out. AT&T is always too late to the party.

I go to school in an especially redneck little town of 150k people (Springfield, MO) and I get 4-5mbps on my iPhone 3GS when I run SpeedTest. Mediacom Internet is rated at 12mbps and I get between 500k-2mbps. It sucks. I'm thinking about switching to a MiFi type device. Does anyone know if it's possible to run xBox Live on MiFi? Or will the device overheat? Also do they really ban you for using over 5gb? The wife and I watch Netflix and Hulu quite a bit on the 360 and MBP.

Funny that here of all places AT&T 3g is twice as fast as cable internet. In summer 2008 when 3g launched here it was 1-1.5mbps. Before Christmas it was around 2-3mbps. They must have switched on some faster capabilities in the last month to month and a half. I'll have to see if it's running close to full speed 7.2mbps when I go home to KC for my birthday next month. Especially at my work in Overland Park, where all the rich people live--the wireless there is usually the fastest in the area.

If your area hasn't been upgraded yet to the fastest 3g just hold tight. When I got back from Christmas Break my iPhone was dropping calls and losing battery at a faster rate than normal. I think it's because they were jacking around with the towers upgrading them. It eventually stopped and it's around that time that I noticed the increase in speed. So if your service is normally ok and everything craps out for a few days and then comes back, you might be in luck and get an upgrade! Though you need the 3GS to take advantage of it.

o yah cause version has 4g. o wait they dont

"AT&T Continuing to Move Forward on Plans for 4G Cellular Network"

How about bringing the existing 3G network up to an acceptable standard?

jeez this is insulting... thanks for upgrading the network, but WHAT ABOUT PHONE CALLS???????

my friend just switched to a "real" ATT iphone after a couple years over on jailbroken tmobile.

in ONE DAY she was like "oh, so THIS is what dropped calls are!"

when tmobile completely pwns att on voice... wtf is going on?

**** your 4g ATT... make with actual phone calls. or is that too old-fashioned?

the future: everyone making skype calls over 3g, as that is the only reliable way make a call on att wireless.

for all the noise they make about their network... and it still sucks. really, really sucks.

Advances in Consumer Tech

If life has taught me anything when pondering technology it's that most of what is discussed is vaporware and if it does show up it's going to be way behind schedule of what was announced, underwhelming, and overpriced.

I'm honestly amazed that the iPhone exists considering what it does -- and the fact that it was mostly on schedule, overwhelmingly great, and now affordable if you don't count the data plans. It would have taken other companies years to even come close.

Seriously, now

I think many of our American companies only think about one thing, the bottom line...

Should our American companies be thinking anything other than the bottom line? No, seriously, remind me what the point of doing business in America is.

BE A SMART CONSUMER. BUY WHAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU, NOT WHAT'S RIGHT FOR A COMPANY TO MAKE PROFIT.

Are you suggesting that the droves of people that purchased the iPhone on AT&T's network are not smart and/or not buying something that is right for them? Or are you saying that you are pissed off that droves of people don't agree with what is right for you?

They did test 2 cities up to 60Mb. Seattle and Boston I think. And they say they are rolling out more cities this year so I would say they are ahead of a company that hope to do a trial in a city this year. The thing is, I doubt (don't know for sure) that LTE will be used for voice at the begining. They are on what, release 8 of the LTE spec?!? No one has settled that part of the spec so the old technology has to do for voice. They will need edge and 3g for voice, I think they prefer edge, more coverage. Verizon will be cdma for voice and both using LTE for data with fallback to cdma or edge/3G depending on the company.

This highlights the main problem with Verizon's plan of keeping the creaky CDMA network going and promising that they are working on LTE. The fallback for LTE is 3G, not CDMA.

The Canadian Carriers that were on CDMA was the light and decided to go 3G+ which is compatible with current 3G devices but also offers 21Mbps data for data cards before going LTE.

We have no 3G coverage in western Mass. Now they want to add 4G?

This would only make sense if they start the 4G in areas that never had 3G to begin with.

Why is it creaky? If you said 'different technology cdma' then maybe I could understand. Not sure what you mean by creaky. Also not sure, but isn't evdo verizon's version of 3G ... and a cdma technology?

Missing a step?

I thought they said that 3G would be the "backbone of the 4G development. If there 3G is this lacking it will laughable when they start 4G.

I want AT&T to do a comparison of there download speeds near my area, 3G is non-existant, so it would be their 2G vs Verizon 3G.

Download that Luke Wilson.

Actually once they start using LTE all voice calls are going to be voip. So it will all be data at that point.
