So....do you have to upgrade and then ask for the credit? Or can you ask for the credit and then buy the phone.

I have a 4S and was not planning on getting the 5 as I dont think it is worth the early upgrade price. But at full upgrade pricing...I would certainly buy it.

I'm interested in the above question as well...

Also, can someone shed some light on the timing for me? I'm eligible for an EARLY upgrade on Oct. 8th with a regular, full-discounted price upgrade in May.

If I try to get the $250 waived, should I wait until after the 8th?

I just asked for the credit without having bought the phone first. Now I'm just waiting for the phone to come into stock.

?

where are you guys seeing $250?

im only seeing $200

its 200 discount across all models.

i currently have an iphone 4s i bought it when it came out last year.

i also just checked the price on apples website and it made me enter in my billing info for aT&t and the price it gave me was:

Image

would i be able to call at&t and ask for a $50 difference if i buy from apple?

and how are people getting their activation fee waived do you simply ask "i want my fee waived" ?

----------

do you get credited only if you purchased the iphone at full price?

Early upgrade is whatever the 2 year price is plus $250 on top of that which is why you were being quoted $650 for a 64GB. 2 year price for a 64 is $400 then add $250 for the early upgrade.

I'm tempted to try again via chat to get the $250 credit.

It's all in the way u ask for it

I never Asked them for the credit. What I did is tell them I was not happy cuz my eligibility had been moved from 12 months to 18 months and that I was a 15 year customer who had never been late or missed a payment and that I had no problem signing another 2 year contract but that I really didn't want to pay the additional $250

The manager OFFERRED me the $250 credit.

you guys who aren't getting the credit need to change your approach. Stop asking for it and call them and do what I did. If u ask for it they may think u feel u are entitled to it. Change ur approach.

I not only got the $250 credit but I got an instant credit of $25, plus I initially got 6 months of unlimited texting and then the manager changed it to $10 a month for unlimited texting for as long as I have a texting plan with Att. So that equals a $120 savings a year on my bill for texting

It's all how u ASK for things. I am pretty darn pleased with what I received.

It seems random, to be honest. Some people flat out asked for it and got it. Other's complained. I called twice and got the same "we can't move up dates, it's Apple's policy." The second time they told me AT&T doesn't give out credit like that. I'll try the online chat and see. I pay $200 a month and have been a customer for 9 years. I don't really want to threaten to leave, but I have 1 line that will be up without an ETF and another in May.

I actually received the promise of the credit from the manager before the phone was even announced. Once I received the phone I called into AT&T and had them apply the credit to my account. I did make sure that it was notes on my account that I was to receive the credit once I had received the phone and agreed to the terms and conditions of the 2 year contract.

Probably because now they are being bombarded with requests its harder to get. But I follow the blogs and saw that the phone was likely going to be announced on the 12th, so I called Att Labor Day weekend to see what they could do prior to the announcement and release of the phone.

Yeah no dice for me and I'm done trying. I did find out that I'm eligible to early upgrade on my line as of 10/15. Gamestop is offering $290 for a 16GB 4S so I'll be selling my phone to them and only have to spend about $200 out of pocket maybe.

Got the $36 waived on my wife's line (full upgrade eligible).
They wouldn't budge on waiving the $250 for me to upgrade my line.

XXX: Thank you but my question was regarding the 9451 line. There is no way to waive the $250 early upgrade? Considering that I already ordered another phone for my wife's line?

Sherry Taylor: No that is the early upgrade pricing.

Sherry Taylor: That can not be waived.

Sherry Taylor: Do you have any other questions?

XXX: So basically, i can terminate early for a lesser price and move to another carrier for a total cost that is lower than paying the early upgrade pricing?

Sherry Taylor: Yes.

Update!

So I'll try to keep this concise.

I am in the grandfathered Unlimited AT&T Data/Text Plan from the iPhone 3G days.

I spoke with a super nice rep. who (after I mentioned NICELY, that I am wanting to upgrade/stay with AT&T but can't afford to be hit with the $250 fee/$36 activation fee) told me she would open a case to get my eligibility date moved up (for the lowest possible pricing - $199/$299/$399). Sounded good.

She then told me a second option of opening a new line, so I could get the lowest device pricing. I asked a few times what all that would entail and what would need to be done on the back end if I chose that option. She said she noted on my account that my current number will be ported to the new device and the new line will be made "inactive" once I received my device. She also told me that she'd waive the $36 activation fee.

I asked a million questions to make sure that I was tracking correctly, but all seems to be well.

In a nutshell, I'm waiting a couple weeks longer than I wanted, but am not spending $649.99 + $36 to get my hands on the 64gb!

Has anyone done this? Hopefully the phone shows up in a timely manner so I can get rid of the 4S!

good luck with that ! cancelling your line within 30 days means returning your phone, canceling after 30 days means ETF !

You got the credit because you're a 15 year customer.

No dice for me.

I'm an ATT Plus member, and I didn't get offered one red cent from CSR or customer retention.

It's been 12 years, but I'm thinking about moving to the V. I'll be dumping ATT wireless + home phone + DSL. Going to cost ATT to lose my big monthly bill. Don't be giving account credits & other freebies without including me at my level.

Can't get anyone on chat for some reason. Going to go to the store tonight and see if they will do anything to help me. I'll be nice about it. Explain I was unaware they moved their 12 month upgrade policy on $200/month accounts to 18 months and ask if there's anything they can offer so I can upgrade without paying the $250 fee this once. My other line does have an available upgrade but I'd like to get both on the same cycle. Maybe because it does they'll offer something so I won't cancel that line, even though I have no plans to actually do that.

chatting now..

"Marites Berdandino: I can explain this fee to you. The upgrade fee is to allow us to assist customers with recommending new equipment, offering special offers and discounts, providing assistance with the upgrade process if needed, and supporting the returns process within 30 days. These specialized processes help us to ensure you are satisfied with your new equipment, and are ready to use it the day you receive it. The upgrade fee allows us to defray some of these additional service costs.
Marites Berdandino: I can have the upgrade fee be waived as one time courtesy of AT&T but not the price of the phone."

No explanation needed. I just wanted the $250.

Got $250 credited as well. Chatted with AT&T for 10 mins and the lady had no problem crediting me the $250. I just copied and pasted the responses form the forum. thanks so much guys. :D

]Awesome to hear that people are still saving money and it seems to be working so far for some people. AT&T should make this more consistent for everybody.

Try a couple more times if you want to stick with AT&T. It all depends on who you get.

Not a damn thing...LOL I have tried, and tried and tried some more. The biggest complaint I have is there are too many damn inconsistencies with the policies.

This was really weird. I chatted with several representatives and all denied me of the $250 credit but would waive the $36 upgrade fee. Until I chatted with Marlan and he gave me a random $153.26 as credit. Since it's better than nothing I'll just keep it and not complain. And once I upgrade to the 5 I'll try to waive the $36 upgrade fee.

LOL I know! Every rep had different answer to bumping the upgrade date but all of them told me there is no policy to get a $250 credit.

Just chatted with them online. The rep said she had escalated my request to her supervisor and they would contact me in the next 48 hours to let me know what they will do. I didn't BS anything, just explained to her I wanted to upgrade my two lines, and was unaware that the yearly upgrade policy on my lines had changed. I had been with AT&T for 10 years and had had yearly upgrades until this year. I was willing to sign a new contract but did not want to pay the $250 early upgrade fee. She said she would see what she could do. We'll see how this turns out.

Don't know yet. Like I posted above, the rep said she had put in an urgent request with the supervisor and they would call me within 48 hours to let me know. I told them I wanted to upgrade both lines and was unaware that I no longer get yearly upgrades, and did not want to pay the $250 upgrade fee. I didn't mention others getting the account credit. The rep said she would see what they could do for me and then said they'd let me know. Strange answer, I don't see anyone else getting a response like that. One of the two lines is eligible to upgrade next month, so maybe if I hold that out and AT&T knows I could move that line elsewhere they will waive the fee.

I got $150 credit way back when this thread first started calling the AT&T late night hours line at about 3 in the morning PST

Even though I didnt get the full 250 and seeing everybody getting denied now lucky for what I got.

Online billing chat is unavailable... Guess they got tired of answering all the questions about the upgrade. When I speak to someone I'm gonna bring up that I didn't know that they moved the upgrade date to 18 months from 12 (which I really didn't). Was it 12 months at launch for the 4S? I don't remember being told of this change either, which means you can legally break your contract with no ETF.
