Question -- I paid $449 for my iPhone 5, which I assumed was the discounted rate plus the $250 early upgrade fee...am I actually going to end up paying $449 PLUS the $250 fee?

Yup... Same story here. I love how AT&T wants to charge me $250 to continue to give them money for two years...

No, I'd rather the upgrade cycle be reasonable and adapt to the refresh cycle of phones... They're losing more money by not giving me the discounted price than they're making by not. Selfish, I know, but it just doesn't make sense to me.Would you rather pay full price then?

I called AT&T before I bought the phone and the rep said he would make a note to credit my account the $250 early upgrade fee. After I bought the phone I called back to confirm my $250 discount and they said they saw the notes but couldn't give me the discount because it wouldn't be approved.
What they did offer was 6 months off of my $30 month unlimited data plan, so $180 + taxes and the credit came to $201.00. It's not the $250 I was promised, but I'll take it.
What an idiot comment... is cheaper to cancel the account and reopen it.. Cancel fee is cheaper than upgrade fee...
So this upgrade fee doesnt make much sense
Just saying you're completely missing the point I was making... Doesn't make the other persons comment any less rude, but still. The fact is that they're making increasingly difficult for people to justify staying with them when they keep shafting people on these fees.Idiot comment? Okay.![]()
I was just pointing out that if he wanted to, he could pay the full price for the phone which would be north of $700, even for a 16GB. So upgrading for subsidy + $250 is still a better deal.
Next time you have something to say, why not just keep it to yourself.
No. They might charge you for it, but I doubt it and if they do it probably won't be more than 20 bucks for the switch. They can't charge you an upgrade fee if you didn't upgrade... You bought a device off-contract.Sweet, thanks for the tip. Got two removed.
For anyone that can help:
considering upgrading another line which does not qualify for subsidized pricing. So, in that case does att still charge an upgrade fee if you pay full price for the phone?
I know I could obtain an unlocked phone instead, but wouldn't I need to get the nano sim from att which in that case they would be expecting an upgrade fee?
They only waived my $36 upgrade fee.
Ordered from apple. Never order from AT&T.
At this point I'm not even going to ask for the credit and just ask them to move my upgrade date up...AT&T waived my upgrade fee ($36) and credited me $100. It might not be the full $250 but I'm pretty happy.
For those of you who got the credit, do you know if it matters whether I buy the phone from AT&T or another retailer?
They wouldn't waive the early upgrade fee for me. They said that fee is what allows me to get the phone at a discounted price, therefore it's required.
What I'm pissed about is I paid $250 early upgrade fee for the iPhone 5, which also put me on a new 2-year contract. They won't unlock my 4s because I have only had it for one year, and they can only unlock after two years. Doesn't make sense if I'm paying for an upgrade fee for a new phone and new contract yet my 4s is still bound by the 2-year rule. Ridiculous.
Correct me if I am wrong...
but these credits are irrelevant if you are out a contract and are on a month-to-month plan, yeah?
These credits are the subsidized amounts if you were to jump back into a contract.
