Question -- I paid $449 for my iPhone 5, which I assumed was the discounted rate plus the $250 early upgrade fee...am I actually going to end up paying $449 PLUS the $250 fee?

Uh oh...

No, $199 for 16GB iPhone + $250 for early upgrade = $449

Yup... Same story here. I love how AT&T wants to charge me $250 to continue to give them money for two years...

I'm not even going to try anymore for the $250, but I will be asking for my upgrade fees to be waived when I do upgrade in a few weeks.

Would you rather pay full price then?
No, I'd rather the upgrade cycle be reasonable and adapt to the refresh cycle of phones... They're losing more money by not giving me the discounted price than they're making by not. Selfish, I know, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

I called AT&T before I bought the phone and the rep said he would make a note to credit my account the $250 early upgrade fee. After I bought the phone I called back to confirm my $250 discount and they said they saw the notes but couldn't give me the discount because it wouldn't be approved.

What they did offer was 6 months off of my $30 month unlimited data plan, so $180 + taxes and the credit came to $201.00. It's not the $250 I was promised, but I'll take it.

I got my family messaging plan for free ($30 credit for 6 months) about 2 months ago.
ANYONE can do that, just threaten to eat the fees and leave.

Someone call ATT now, tell them you are want to know the EFT amount cause you can go with a local carrier for 50-75% less the cost.
ATT will put you on hold for a minute then offer you one of 2 things
1) $10/mo for life off of messaginging
2) $30/mo off for months, basically free messaging

I took $30/mo for 6 months as iI want the $$$ off now. Ill call on 6 months and get them to take the $$$ off again :)

What you got, anyone can get at anytime.

I tried but only got 25 instant credit n the 42 for upgrade activation. I'm fine with that since I chose to upgrade early n I been with AT&T since 2000 n my bill only 72 a month with unlimited everything so no complaints here!

called and just right off the bat told her that I had a buddy who was able to have his upgrade fees waived by simply calling and asking... the att rep was very nice about and said let me go ahead and take a look and she almost immediately was ready to give me the upgrade fee credits without checking then after confirming she did tell me she was going to be able to do a 1 time courtesy upgrade for me on the lines i recently upgraded... which is to the tune of $72 bucks i believe
I recently, about a month ago read on here about getting the 6 months free messaging which is about to begin being credited now so thats about $252 bucks when its all said and done in the span of 6 months and if I upgrade an additional line that is not eligible but have the upgrade free waived on that line its almost as is they credit me $288 right?
I am not eligible for a upgrade on 1 of my lines for a iPhone she basically said she could give me the reduced price on any phone but the iPhone 5, I really did want that $250 credit towards the early upgrade price but I guess thats pushing it... but the early upgrade fees seem to be being waived very easily at the moment so call and just be pleasant and they will waive them literally took less than 5 minutes...

What an idiot comment... is cheaper to cancel the account and reopen it.. Cancel fee is cheaper than upgrade fee...

So this upgrade fee doesnt make much sense

Idiot comment? Okay.

I was just pointing out that if he wanted to, he could pay the full price for the phone which would be north of $700, even for a 16GB. So upgrading for subsidy + $250 is still a better deal.

Next time you have something to say, why not just keep it to yourself.

Just saying you're completely missing the point I was making... Doesn't make the other persons comment any less rude, but still. The fact is that they're making increasingly difficult for people to justify staying with them when they keep shafting people on these fees.

If its cheaper to leave than to stay, what incentive do I have to stay? I understand the cell phone business is to give new customers better deals so you can rope them in, but this is nuts. You're asking me to pay double the price of the cheapest upgrade option. That shouldn't be the case. Tack an extra 50 or 100 on, not 250. I'm not arguing for the fee to go away... Just for it to be reasonable. The only reason I'm asking for it to be taken away totally is cause it's 250.

Sweet, thanks for the tip. Got two removed.

For anyone that can help:

considering upgrading another line which does not qualify for subsidized pricing. So, in that case does att still charge an upgrade fee if you pay full price for the phone?

I know I could obtain an unlocked phone instead, but wouldn't I need to get the nano sim from att which in that case they would be expecting an upgrade fee?

No. They might charge you for it, but I doubt it and if they do it probably won't be more than 20 bucks for the switch. They can't charge you an upgrade fee if you didn't upgrade... You bought a device off-contract.

They only waived my $36 upgrade fee.

Through Chat, I got the same thing $36 credit next month, that is all I was looking for because I was already out of contract. They also unlocked my iphone 4 within 30 seconds.

I cant stand the upgrade fee, when I end up doing all the work to upgrade lol. I bought it at store and called them when they were having "issues" activating my new iPhone 5.

The guy I called wouldn't go for it. He acknowledged some reps were giving the $250 discount, but that it was against policy and they might be getting in trouble for it (though I doubt that). Also, he wouldn't acknowledge the "one time courtesy waiver" (which does sound like official policy to me).

AT&T waived my upgrade fee ($36) and credited me $100. It might not be the full $250 but I'm pretty happy.

It took me some trying and explaining over and over that I have been an iPhone customer since the very first one. I use to et the one year upgrade status ever year, so I explained I would no longer be getting this incentive. Then asked if tehy could offer me what others have been offered in this case which was a $250 service credit to offset the additonal cost of $250 early upgrade fee.

For those of you who got the credit, do you know if it matters whether I buy the phone from AT&T or another retailer?

I haven't even bought the phone yet, that they ae me te $250 credit for and already my account shows a $250 negative balance, minus 2 of my 3 upgrade fees that will be processed on my next bill. So i am assuking it would not matter.

They wouldn't waive the early upgrade fee for me. They said that fee is what allows me to get the phone at a discounted price, therefore it's required.

What I'm pissed about is I paid $250 early upgrade fee for the iPhone 5, which also put me on a new 2-year contract. They won't unlock my 4s because I have only had it for one year, and they can only unlock after two years. Doesn't make sense if I'm paying for an upgrade fee for a new phone and new contract yet my 4s is still bound by the 2-year rule. Ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure your 4S can be unlocked since you paid the ETF. Try calling or using online chat again!

Correct me if I am wrong...

but these credits are irrelevant if you are out a contract and are on a month-to-month plan, yeah?

These credits are the subsidized amounts if you were to jump back into a contract.

That is correct. The $250 is for an early upgrade option. I was able to have that amount plus the activation fee credited to my account by simply asking and being polite. I figured it was worth a shot and was pleasantly surprised by the reps willingness to do it.
