The 22GB of data limit is for the grandfathered unlimited accounts. Will they apply it to the UNLIMITED SHARED accounts, who knows? I can understand why we might believe they still might do that and if they do it, it we be even worse, as the UNLIMITED data is now SHARED and it will be easier for 4 or more people to use up 22GB of data compared to 1 user.

According to the fine print, its 22gb per line not per account.

That's a little better, as no one on my plan uses that much, well, maybe my step-son, as he likes to LISTEN to music on YOU-TUBE. I know, I told him, there are many other alternatives, but he just does it. He uses up about 85% our 30GB monthly plan every month. I would consider switching, but since tethering is not an option on this plan, I won't be. I still don't get why not. I have 6 phones on my plan already, I don't want a table on my plan for the occasional use on LTE.

It's still "unlimited" but once you reach 22 GB, they might throttle you... if they do throttle you, good luck getting much more data after that for the rest of the month.
After 22GB of data usage on a line in a bill cycle, for the remainder of the bill cycle AT&T may slow data speeds on that line during periods of network congestion. Additional data and other restrictions apply. See att.com/unlimitedplan for details.

Here's the official news release from AT&T on their website: http://about.att.com/story/unlimited_plan_for_wireless_and_directv_subscribers.html

I have a grandfathered unlimited plan costing $70 per month (soon to be $75). I held onto it through the "throttle at 5gb" period. I'm glad that AT&T changed their policy (with some prodding) because I use about 20gb per month streaming music and radio. This new deal sounds like it will be good for some customers, but please find out as much as you can before you sign on. The throttling issue left a bad taste in my mouth: "sure, you have unlimited data, but we never said that it would be usable unlimited data. It's not our fault that you didn't look behind our back to see that our fingers were crossed (i.e., scrutinize that contract with the eye of an attorney)".

They're only going to throttle you in congested areas. I'm on the grandfathered unlimited data plan that also throttles at 22gb. I've consistently gone over 22gbs every month and have only been throttled once and it was only for a brief period of time.

Not sure where but I read the 22GB is per line on the account, not as a whole.

I have been "throttled" at 5GB or less for the most part since I am on a shared data plan today. 4 of us share 15GB per month and with two of them teens its been a lot of work to stay within the limit. 22GB per device would be a big jump. I do understand you point though, its taken into account in this decision I'm making. Not sure yet I want to lose Hotspot, its one of the reasons I let unlimited go last time.

The article from the verge states that att says unlimited means 22gb

It mentions specifically about the old grandfathered plan. It doesn't claim that for the new plan.

"It's fair to ask just how "unlimited" these unlimited plans are — in the past, AT&T essentially treated its grandfathered unlimited plans as soft-capped 5GB plans. After a complaint from the FCC, AT&T now gives unlimited plans unfettered access to 22GB per line. Over that limit, you'll be subject to slowdowns if network congestion demands it."

On other thing to consider, if it requires you to merge your AT&T and DIRECTV/UVERSE accounts into one billing, I could not do this because of my FAN discount, you might be out of luck too. I will take my 25% off vs the $10 in monthly savings having them merged.

Not sure why you couldn't merge the wireless and DirecTV accounts together. I have a 24% FAN discount on my wireless account and I have my DirecTV account merged just fine to get the extra $10 off per month. I also have a U-verse internet account in the mix too. All three services are billed under the same AT&T account with no problem and I am getting all the discounts I should be getting.

My bill would go from $203 before taxes to $260 before taxes. That's 5 phones and a tablet with 30GB currently. No tethering and no FAN discount. Th chat representative didn't seem to knowledgable, does this sound right?

Reading through that link, I saw no where did it say that "Tethering" was not available...But it probably isn't

I was on the phone with AT&T and she told me because of my FAN discount, I could not merge my accounts. I will try again later

You are right, it's per line. it's on their site http://about.att.com/story/unlimited_plan_for_wireless_and_directv_subscribers.html in SMALL text <- see what I did there...lol

I wonder if this applies to my LTE home phone and Internet. I'm paying $20 for unlimited voice and around $125 for 30 GB.

From what I read you would only pay 4 of the 5 phones, according to what I am seeing the 4 phone is free
So 100+40+40+40+0=220

Do we know for sure that FAN discounts won't apply to this unlimited plan? It would seem to me that the FAN discount should still apply to the cost of the data on the unlimited plan ($60) but it obviously wouldn't apply to the device access fee ($40 per smartphone/tablet).

Tethering, or hotspots, are not permitted on this new plan. If you click the photo graphic on their news release page and squint really hard, you can read the fine print.

Select connected devices only. No tethering or mobile hotspot use.

Yea, I don't see why your discount would not apply. Not sure which parts it will discount but I'm sure it will apply as it did before.

Actually, you were correct. I looked a little more closely at the DirecTV portion of my AT&T bill and the $10 discount I'm receiving is for Advanced Receiver Service and it expires after 2 years. I decided to call AT&T to find out if something was amiss with the credit and it took no fewer than 5 different phone transfers for me to get to an agent who finally said, "Oh, you can't get both the $10 per month discount for combining your DirecTV and wireless accounts and the FAN discount on your wireless account. You have to pick one or the other."

My current UDP is $89.99 - $16.10 for my 23% FAN discount. $73.10 total. That will be going up to $78.10. Add $38.00 with my FAN discount for the 5GB iPad plan. That bring it to $116.10. Still cheaper and I can use my iPad as a hotspot.

I'd consider this plan if my FAN discount would apply. The total would then be $107.80 if they have texting grouped into the price (FAN doesn't apply to texting in the current bill as it's listed separate). I'd ALSO need to be able to use the iPad as a hotspot. This comes in handy when my kids want use their iPads to go online in the car. Or, a hotspot/tethering would have to be reasonable.

Anyone know how much it is to add the hotspot option? I've been looking but can't find it.

I guess something else that needs to be answered is what will the FAN discount apply to if we combine everything?

The old $30 plan was ONLY the data. Text and talk was extra on top of that.

This encompasses all of that.
The old price for unlimted talk text and web for 1 line back in the day was $99 and then they dropped it down to $69 before they dropped unlimted data

Yeah sure from a company that doesn't deserve our trust, or does it? Just like current grandfathered loyal customers, in a couple of years they will treat you like crap. Remember when they blocked FaceTime, throttled you, prevented you from using your phone as a hotspot and increased your monthly fees - all for being a loyal customer who took on a service they offered.

No since in me trying again then.

Here are the reasons I am not doing this
1. If you have to merge accounts (AT&T w/ DirecTV or UVerse), I am out, not losing my 25% discount, not unless it's worth it.
2. Tethering is not allowed in this plan, which kind of sucks, why not, they already are throttling abusers, just a stupid rule for people that don't abuse it.
3. I have 6 phones, 5*40 = 200 + 100 for the plan (60 for plan and 40 for 1 phone) - 40 for 4th phone. that $260. I think my bill is lower, only because I use NEXT and my plan is $15 per phone, not $40. My current plan, I am already at $220...before my discount, my discount brings it down to (187.50). I don't see the cost benefit here unless we get the NEXT discount per phone which would bring down the price to $15 per line, which could bring down the bill to 5*15 = 75 + 75 for plan (60 for plan and 15 for 1 phone) - 15 for 4th phone, that's what 150, then I might consider, but I would like tethering.

I might have to call AT&T back and see what my options are...
