I just switched from Verizon (15+ year customer on unlimited data) to AT&T tonight and got on this new plan for DIRECTV customers. It breaks down like this for my 2-line account:
Monthly recurring costs:
$60 unlimited data plan (22GB per line unthrottled, after which data speeds MAY be slowed)
$40 line access for Phone 1
$40 line across for Phone 2
$28.34 installment for Phone 2
- Must purchase at least one new phone under the NEXT installment plan program
- 64GB iPhone 6s Plus on a 30 month installment plan - your payment may vary depending on phone chosen
- $849.99 / 30 installments
- Each of the 30 installments is 100% interest free and you can upgrade whenever you want by paying the amount owed, which will not be the full cost of the phone, Ex: $28.34 X 24 $679.99 - but you will have to trade it in of course
$13.18 surcharges and other fees
$18.04 gov't fees and taxes (your taxes may vary based on your state)
Monthly discounts:
$15 off for employer (FAN) discount
$10 off Directv bill
One-time upfront costs:
$15 activation fee for Phone 1
$15 activation fee for Phone 2
$80.75 sales tax for Phone 2
One-time credits (PER new phone purchased)
Let me briefly explain. I only bought one new phone tonight under the NEXT program. I brought my current Verizon iPhone 6s Plus over onto the new AT&T account. The following credits are applied for EACH new phone purchased. Therefore, if I hadn't already had my own iPhone, I could have traded in another phone and received double the credits listed below. The reason I didn't trade my existing iPhone in is because it was valued at only $420, but the phone is a 128 GB 6s Plus and is only 90 days old. It didn't make sense and I would be losing money there.
$200 instant credit
- Can be applied to bill or anything else in the store
- per phone traded-in with a trade-in value of at least $10 and is in good working condition and does not have screen damage
- Ex: traded in old perfect condition 64GB iPhone 5 and got $200 credit which covered all my upfront costs and then some (walked out the door tonight without paying 1 cent).
- They valued another 64GB iPhone 5 that I had that had a cracked screen. This phone wasn't even activated but they said I could still trade it in for credit. It was valued at $24. If it hadn't had a cracked screen, that would have been another $200 credit because they automatically upgrade you to the full $200 discount AS LONG AS THE PHONE IS WORTH AT LEAST $10.
$100 credit for porting number from old carrier
- Applied as a bill credit after 45 days
$200 credit for being a DIRECTV customer
- Applied as a bill credit after 45 days
My new monthly total will be about $175.22/ month for two lines with unlimited data, minutes, and texts. This includes all taxes and fees and monthly discounts and a new phone for my wife. This number does not include the $10 discount on my DIRECTV bill, so effectively you could say my monthly bill will be $165.22. In 45 days, a credit of $300 will be applied to my account, effectively paying for two months of service. Since Verizon increased the pricing from $29.99 per line for unlimited data to $49.99, my Verizon bill for the same two lines was over $200 per month and that was only with 2000 minutes per month. Minutes are that important to us but still.
I hope this helps answer any questions/concerns anyone might have about this new program and I will be happy to answer any questions you might have that I didn't address.
P.S. I contacted Verizon prior to contacting AT&T to see if they would reduce my bill by the $40 they had increased it by and they pretty much refused and said it was a good deal and that the only way they could save me some money was if I was willing to move to a shared data plan. I was already pretty ticked that they didn't even tell me about the price increase (found out about it via Macrumors) but then they weren't willing to help a long time loyal customer or even listen to what I was asking. Why would I want to change my plan when the whole purpose of the request was to save money without losing my unlimited data. Between my wife and me, we average less than 12 GB of data combined per month. I could understand the increase in price if we were pulling down 20 or 30 or more gigs each month but come on!

FWIW, I changed my three lines to this new unlimited data plan today. I was previously on an old family plan (700 minutes) and had one grandfathered unlimited data line, one 3GB data line, and one 300MB data line. This switch will save me about $10/month, and will also get all lines unlimited talk and data.
Because they are offering the 4th line free promo, I asked an online chat rep if I could activate my iPad on the account for free. After "checking" she told me that yes, I could, and I would just need to go to an ATT store and get a SIM to activate it. I went by an ATT store tonight, and the rep there also confirmed that I could activate my iPad for the free 4th line, which I did. I guess we will see if the credit shows up like it is supposed to in two months. If not, at least I have the saved chat transcript to fall back on...
That's cool. The sales rep I worked with today said that you could get an iPad Air 2 for $99.99, but you had to add it to the plan. You can't just use it for wifi. Extra lines are $40 and this didn't make sense for our budget, but based on what you've found out, if you had three lines, it would make a lot of sense to get that iPad for only $99.99 and add it for free as the fourth line.
