When the promotion is over, it's over. After seeing the thread I called in and upgraded to the 15/30 gig promo. But for 20 more dollars I could have 40 gigs. To me, that's a lot.

that would let me actually stream video sometimes and not have to worry. Us data users have always been hamstrung by ATT's pricing. Even the unlimited plan, when I had it,only let me use up to five gigs before they slowed me down, so it wasn't really useful and unlimited.

I'm going to upgrade to the 20/40 gb plan after Oct 2. That is when my new billing period will start. After October 31 any changes will cause us to go back to the original billing amounts. Isn't that right? So whatever we do during this promotional period needs to be a solid decision.

I know that I am going to hate paying for 40 gb and only using 12,but I don't want to be shortsighted on this either.

I am thinking the same thing. I am currently on the 15gb (soon to be 30gb). However 40gb will only cost me $15 more. Arg.

I been mulling it over since I posted earlier and really thinking I need to go for the 40gb option since if I go over 1 gb it will cost me $15 so the $20 for the increase from 30-40 GB really makes sense

Yeah, I think I'll likely switch to the 40GB, too, albeit will probably do it in stages. I think I'll use up my 10GB first (should be gone in 1-2 days), then switch to 30GB and just do the switch to 40GB when the 30GB runs out or by 10/29 at the latest. :p

How the heck are you guys getting 25 and 27% discounts? I'm at 19% which I thought was pretty good, but wow!

I'm only @ 17%. It was an extra $24 a month for me to make the switch and with a family of 4 that was always coming close to the 10GB mark this was too good of a deal to pass up.

Still won't get me off my unlimited, the price is still to much. I'm paying 240.00 a month for 2 unlimited and 2 regular 3gb data plans all on 2 year contracts. If I switched I would lose unlimited and pay 290.00 monthly, not a good deal at all. Wouldn't switch to next though, hate that concept.

For the 4 lines you have you would pay $190 for the 30gb Data plan($130 base plan plus $15 per smartphone). That also gets you unlimited talk, unlimited text as well as personal hotspot and international texting. On a 2 year contract, you would pay $40 per smartphone so your bill would be $130 for the 30gb plus $160($40x4 smartphones) so $290. You get a $25 discount per line for using next or using your own smartphone. I would switch if I was you. You would save $50 and still get 30gb of data and unlimited talk and text, personal hotspot and international texting. You can pretty much buy 2 iphone 6 on next and with that included, your bill would be $240. With next or a 2 year contract, your phone is bound by some type of agreement so it's no big deal.

I moved from unlimited data and saved $150/mo switching. I average 12gb/mo across 5 lines when I had unlimited data so I went to 20gb plan, now I have 40gb! No way we will use all of that but it's nice to have as a buffer and save $150/mo!

Just curious, if you're only using approximately 12gb a month why didn't you just take the 30gb plan to save even more money?

The next program isn't my thing. It makes no sense, I would rather buy the phone in a 2 year contract and sell it then make 10 payments, have to trade it in and have more payments on the next gen phone.

I imagine he's taking into account that he won't be throttled anymore, making it easier to use data. That, and tethering

Well, I thought about that but he has 5 lines and only uses 12gb. Tethering could definitely use more data but going to 30 would be well over double what he uses monthly at this time. Having 5 lines and only using 12 gb more than likely means that only 1 or 2 lines at most is being throttled. Probably none of the lines are being throttled is my personal guess but still a guess unless the other person tells us definitively. 40gb just seems like an overly large safety net but of course it's his decision.

You hate the concept of saving money vs a 2 year upgrade contract? Mkay.

You don't save money though. You can't really resell your device, but on a 2 year I can. So in the end I make more when selling it rather then making payments on top of my bill.

Whaaaat?? Wrong. After paying for the device (either 20 or 24 month installments or outright today) you can sell it. You're not leasing the phone, you're purchasing it with 0% financing.

But isn't the cost per month an additional to the 25.00 you pay for the next program? So in the end don't you end up paying more per month then if you outright purchased?

With Next it more or less balances out. The $25/month is only if you sign a 2 year contract, and amounts to a lot more than Next or buying the phone outright.

In some cases yes… in some cases no. What you need to do is make an apples to apples comparison. And what that meant to me was to see what my true cost of both plans would be over a two year period of time.

You are correct that you will have a higher monthly fee using NEXT initially (until the phone cost is paid), but what you needn't forget is that on a two year contract, you are still paying for the phone. Subsidy price plus ATT is building costs into your monthly bill. Does your monthly go down when you've reached 24 months on a two year contract? No.

I see. Give it a thought anyway. Basically with the next 18(my plan) you are allowed to trade your phone in after 18 months and then you would be able to upgrade to a new phone or you could make 6 extra payments after the first 12 payments(to meet the 18 months requirement) if you wanted to trade your phone in and upgrade in a year through AT&T. The nice thing is you are able to pay off the phone anytime after 2 payments.

A 6 plus 64gb comes out to $35.42 a month on the next 18 plan so in a year, $425 would have been paid, leaving a balance of $425. Instead of doing it AT&Ts way, it's easier just to pay off the balance($425) and then you would fully own the 6 plus 64gb. You can ask AT&T to unlock it and then sell it on Craigslist or eBay or whatever. You will be able to sell it to for $600 which would cover the $425 you owe and have a little extra. Then you would start a new next plan for the new iPhone. In the end, with the next or not, what matters is how much the bill is.

You're spot on, as only 2 lines were being throttled. BUT...I had to watch tethering (MyWi) a lot of the time. So, I really couldn't use it as I'd like to. Now I will use as much as I'd like, and probably never go over 40gb.

However, if I do find that we are STILL under 30gb then by all means I will switch to that plan. I'm just playing it safe right now.

Actually, on the new Mobile Share Value Plans, they do. You only pay the extra $15-25 per month for the duration of the 24-month contract. After that, you go back to receiving the $15-25 no contract discount.

So you are basically paying for an unlocked phone, full price correct? If you decided to pay the phone off after 2 installments, how much would that be?

There is no price difference between NEXT and paying full price. The only difference is you're paying in interest free installments.

I have had my iphones for 10 days now, can I switch to the next plans? Or would I have to return the phones to apple and buy from ATT?

you can do the switch in store based on where you purchased from. preordered from apple = you'll need to process return/refund in the apple store. they will then let you re-purchase the (same) phone on NEXT.

Makes perfect sense, I knew I didn't have enough variables to understand why... I'm just a curious kind of fella, lol! Thanks for the extra detail!!
