Does ATT allow number swapping? My wife's 2 year old 4 is due for an upgrade, she's fine getting my 4S which I can just swap the SIM over. If I used her line to do the upgrade to the 5, can I just tell ATT to swap the sim #'s. From what I understand, the 5 has a new sim so swaps aren't possible.

That's the thing though.

As far as I can tell, AT&T stopped doing the subsidy last year. I know because I had to do an upgrade swap even though I did that whole sing and dance "primary account >$100" nonsense.

The iP4 still sold like hot cakes.

So maybe it won't be as hot (even though I know it will), but to say that it'll flop just because iP4S users won't be able to get it for nothing? That's crazy.

It must've been random last year, because they bumped my upgrade date up for me last year and I didn't even ask them to do it. I just went online and it was there... I have upgraded yearly since Jesus was a child, so I cannot explain what happened to some folks last time around, either.

Most of the people I know personally who do the yearly thing also got the upgrade bump for the 4s.

Hmm... odd.

Should be interesting after the carriers post their numbers.

my brother has gotten annual upgrades since 3GS and they texted him again offering an early upgrade... kind of surprised but that's really cool of ATT.

That's the full upgrade, not early upgrade (which is $250 on top of the subsidized price). Terminology has changed this year and yes, it's semantics.

at&t is still giving some people full eligibility this year, but they're in the minority and it's no longer automatic that if your bill is over $100/mo the primary line is eligible for the full upgrade after 12 months. Unfortunately, the criteria for this remains a mystery.

yea buddy.

it is TOTALLY up to the person on the other end of the phone. i told her i am pre-ordering tonight so she did this right away.

You are very lucky. I've tried like 6 times today, no one will even let me explain my situation.

I think that it is really unfair that only certain people are getting this $250 dollar credit. AT&T should be on the same page with each other, its another way for them to lose customers.

My family has been with them for over 20 years, and we are treated like crap. I've always stuck behind AT&T and now they are making me really regret that.

I’m in the same boat as many ($220/month bill, AT&T customer for 5+ years, never late, yearly iPhone upgrades, etc.)…
*
Called 611 yesterday and asked about the changes… typical response about Apple having more stringent policies, etc. I politely asked about my ETF and the # of months left on my plan and that’s when the AT&T rep offered to knock $10 off my $30 family messaging plan which would allow me to get a new dummy line for $9.99 and the iPhone 5 for $199/$299/$399 on launch date. Getting a new dummy line is not new but getting it by still paying the same amount a month is not too bad and with the dummy line, I’ll be guaranteed to have access to the fully discounted price every year based on the staggered renewal dates of my lines. The 10 discount does not expire either.

This is why it is unfair to other AT&T customers. Only certain reps are willing to work with the customer, like they are playing favorites. AT&T is really digging themselves a deep hole.

I bought a 4S at launch last year and am eligible for an upgrade this year. I have no idea how I got it though. My wife's eligible too.

I'm on the fence about upgrading though. Seems like any changes are subtle. I see this as the beginning of the end for major upgrades though. There's really only so much one can improve on for a cellphone at this point besides speed bumps.

I've always assumed this day would come and since I started handing down my iPhones to my kids, I'll just upgrade one of my eligible lines this year, then upgrade my own line next year, etc.

We have spares around here if we need them.

:)
We do the same. We call it "leapfrog" :)
4 line family plan, with 2 eligible each year. Kids get the hand-me-down iPhones, we keep their old ones as spares/loaners, and we upgrade every year. It's worked out really well.

How would this be done this year as the 5 sim is smaller than the 4S?

I'm going to do my best to explain my situation, but please forgive me in advance if this seems a bit confusing.

I am eligible for "early iPhone upgrade" now on AT&T, meaning I could get a 64GB iPhone 5 for $649 with a new two-year contract.

Instead, what I want to do is buy the phone outright for $849 and NOT sign a new two-year contract.

So my question is, has anyone ever done this in past years on the pre-order thing? I guess essentially I'm asking if AT&T is going to try to "force" me to do the early iPhone upgrade on the pre-order thing at midnight when I try to order and if so, is there a way around this?

Thanks in advance.

Yep. They won't budge for an Apple device, but said they would for anything else. I don't get it at all. Why wouldn't they want to make the sale regardless of which phone they sell, unless they get a better cut from other products (I have heard this was the case).

I was told by an ATT rep that early upgrade pricing to iPhones is Apple's call. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but it would be consistent with what you've stated.

You can always swap phones with someone by going to an ATT store and requesting that they do it by giving you new SIMs, so yes.

you guys all act like going to verizon or sprint will result in a different outcome! im just waiting for the "Verizon wont let me upgrade to iphone 5s (or whatever they call it)" you guys sign a 24 month contract, its stated in front of you...then complain about it 12 months into it?

people should complain more to apple as to how they are charging $29 for a lighting dock adapter which probably only costs $2 to make

Our friendly neighborhood AT&T store works with us to move lines to the correct devices. We plan to activate in-store. They will issue SIMs for our new iPhones, we will move the kids' sims from their old iPhones to our 4S units. I think the technical term is a Device Swap. It's not a problem.

I was going to do an early upgrade on my account and pay the extra $250, but then realized that we have an extra line on my account from years ago that belongs to my dad, and is eligible for an upgrade. He got his own business number but AT&T never wanted us to cancel his old line, saying it would cost more money than to pay the extra $10 a month. Sounds to me like they just want more money from us :p

Anyway, now I'm just going to do an upgrade swap. I talked to their online chat and the guy said I could just bring it in to a store or call them and they'd do it for me.

You're going to have to go to the store for the new sim.

To everyone questioning whether this might be as a result of Apple asking them to change, and not believing it, I can't understand why this is so hard to believe.

Maybe Apple is trying to reduce the number of used iphones on the secondary market. For every iphone ATT lets a user upgrade early, that's one iphone Apple doesn't sell to someone who wants a new iphone. Remember Apple is still selling the iphone 4 (and until yesterday, the 3gs)

ATT doesn't care what phone you use, you are tied into a contract, they are getting paid either way. Only Apple has something to lose if ATT allows you to upgrade.

Why? I read that the SIM card isn't tied to a number until you activate it. It makes sense, too. Why would they customize each SIM card in each iPhone? Sounds like it'd take up a lot of unnecessary time. I would just call them before I activate it and they would tell the IMEI to use my number instead of his.

Good luck.

What are yuo going to do for a phone till then? And you are still going to have to pay the bll

No, I can upgrade now for $449 instead of the $199 for the 16G. You pay extra to upgrade before your contract is up.

I called ATT, told them I was extremely unhappy, and they took away the early upgrade provision. Now im eligible for no charge upgrade and I ordered the iphone 4s when it came out..

I don't even have that option. I upgraded on October 7 to the 4s paying $199 + $250 and I have to pay $649 for the iPhone 5 until October 8 2012. I thought AT&T's cycle for early upgrades was 6 months and not 12 months?

Please help me understand this...

I have purchased the new Apple iPhone on the release date since the original iPhone in 2007. I of course have been with AT&T the entire time.

In 2010 I paid $199 for the iPhone 4...
In 2011 I paid $449 for the iPhone 4S...
Now, they want me to pay $649 for the iPhone 5...

How does that work? I chatted with them and threatened to leave, they contacted a manager and they told me I was SOL. I then called them and begged for an early upgrade price, he said they couldn't do anything until tomorrow...

When I check my eligibility, it says May 2013. They tell me I'm eligible for an early upgrade November 8... They said they could do a month early, so October 8... How the heck can they charge so much each year? How am I at least not eligible for an early upgrade tomorrow?

You upgraded to the iPhone 4S a week before it was released? Interesting.

Yup you're dates are EXACTLY the same as mine. Sucks! What will you be doing then?
