AT&T still offers a "pay per message" plan. So for all you complainers, you can still migrate to iMessage without a mandatory text message plan.

But as my post above says, iMessage doesn't cover all my bases. I would still have to pay per message to non-iOS5 users, and that would suck.

So $299 for the 32GB model + $85 per month for voice, data and unlimited texts x 24 = $2339 :O

I pay $10 per month ($240) for the 32GB model + $55 per month for voice, data and unlimited texts x 24 = $1560

AT&T really is screwing customers over in America!

I suppose it's just a matter of choosing where you want to find your slimy, deadly reptiles. Yours are all in the bush and rivers. Ours are behind the Blue AT&T Death Star sign...

Need to consider if I should downgrade my current unlimited texting plan to the $10/1000 and suck up the additional cost between now and whenever iOS5 rolls out because it will most likely be cheaper in the long run.

I'm in the same boat as you. I want to downgrade but I know I will go over 1000 per month up until iOS 5 comes out

Thanks MacRumors! I didnt know they even came out with the $10 plan! That was a quiet update....I now have that plan, as I went down to 15 since the $5 plan is just not quite enough. Sucks that new people can't get this anymore. And YES IT REALLY SUCKS THAT WE EVEN HAVE TO PAY FOR THESE IN THE FIRST PLACE! We already Pay for DATA! Am I missing something here? How are a few hundred lines of text the smae price as streaming data from netflix? Or essentially more expensive?? Can't wait for iMessage!

TYPICAL of AT&T, their biggest strategy is selling you crap you don't need and overcharging you for it.

I personally am still on the $5 / 200 plan, since I am not a 15 year old kid and prefer actual converstations (it is a phone, right?). I rarely go over 180 texts, somtimes exceed my limit by a few texts.

As soon as the iPhone 5 comes, I am dropping them like a bad habit

We never had any messaging plan on our iPhones. My wife and I have always used Google Voice to text-message everything. We've played around a bit with apps/services like Beluga also.

Google Voice messaging doesn't always go through though. Sometimes I'll message her something with it, and it shows up like an hour later. This will all go the way of the Dodo though once iMessage comes out....that is, if it's better.

I refuse to ever ever EVER pay for a simple text message to AT&T. I mean, come on, how much does it actually cost them to send 160 characters?

Most laws and regulations are in response to crimes being committed against a helpless population, not some plot by Them. Some laws have unintended consequences, but no laws make things worse.

Funny how tea party types are agin big guvment, but somehow think big monopolies are better.

Yea, you'd have to be pretty myopic to think that things have always been what they are now all over the world. Want no regulations or laws? There are plenty of places, & even time periods right here in our own country to see what that looks like.

There's a lot of excess & poorly applied business law, I'll give you, but to make such asinine comments as "the gov should only deliver the mail and stay out of everyones business..." well, we tried that once. & guess what, it sucked, for enough people, that the laws we have now were made.

Compared to any other 1st world country, those laws are pretty sparing on the part of consumer protections as it is.

Hello iMessage. $20 for text messages is insanity.

But I get you're not a AAA rated country anymore.

Oh is it still fashionable to trash-talk the US? I thought the '90's were over and all you petty juveniles had grown up. My mistake. Resume throwing rocks in the street and burning cars.

I pay £15 ($19) for Unlimited texts, 1200 minutes and unlimited data inluding tethering

For those times when you have to message other people not using iOS 5, use the totally free (well, for now...) Google Voice app.

I pay $10 for unlimited texts on the same network, and 3000 additional texts to other carriers. I also get 1GB data and next-to-free calls (around 15 cent per call).

What a crock of ****. It costs, literally, fractions of a penny to send a text message. The markup is beyond calling it price gouging. And now they're forcing you to have unlimited?

I'll admit right now that I have family unlimited across a few lines, so at least the cost is spread out a bit, but for people with a single line, this is insanity.

Text messaging should be INCLUDED in data plans. It doesnt cost the telecom companies anything. This latest move is Total BS. Greed. Pure and simple.

When iOS 5 comes out, people will be dumping this turd service faster than you can text the word WTF!

my plan

Is this AT&T sticking it to Apple users for having iMessage in iOS 5 to use instead of text messages?

i have ATT, unilimited data, NO text message plan, 450 mins.
and my bill INCLUDING taxes comes out to $66.95

what saves me is the textnow, textfree apps that i use to send SMS & MMS to all my contacts. Downside is, sometimes the text apps go down for a minute or two, and i cant send out my text because its an independant app server that has nothing to do with ATT.
but, i cant complain since that is all i pay.
I HAVE A JAILBROKEN IPHONE.. and guess what... on my status bar, i renamed it to ** AT&T STINKS!!!!**

I say do it. Between Google Voice now, and soon iMessage, it'll be worth it to be locked in.

Yes there is.....it is Text Messaging from the Telcos. It is device agnostic....which is why iMessage will fail (just like FaceTime) and why the Telcos can get away with a high cost for their service.

iMessage can't fail. its not really possible. if you have an iOS 5 device and the other person does too it gets sent via iMessage. if one of the two people don't then it gets sent via text. the phone does everything for you. all you have to do is type and send. people might not use it as much on the iPad or iPod Touch but it will get a lot of use.

Why couldn't iMessage work with non iOS/Mac devices? Seems like Apple could really open up in the budget market if their devices could negate the need for a texting plan.

was thinking the same thing. if apple could license iMessage to the biggest smartphone vendors (Google, Microsoft, Rim, HP) then it would be taken care of. I think a lot of people would like this. I mean RIM might not take it because of BBM and Apple probably won't but i think it would go far.

All of you suggesting Google Voice for texting are out of your minds... sure, it's free. But at what cost? Now I have to give everyone a new phone number to use for texting? It's easy to send messages from it, but I'm not going to ask everyone with my phone number to try and remember to text my alternate number since I'm cheap.

That's not very consumer oriented. I send a bunch of texts but now I won't have any idea which ones are "free" via iMessage and which ones I pay for until the telco bill arrives.

Not sure where you are reading this. Looks like unlimited texting is limited to texting.

It looks to me like this is just a passive way of ATT telling prospective customers to "please use Verizon as we are at capacity and cannot accomodate new clients at this time."

Dumb.Greedy.Move. but, at least for now, new customers have options and current customers are grandfathered to their existing plan.

It is a recent change, you have to actually ask for it if you are on an unlimited text plan now. I don't know if there are limits as to what minutes plan you have to be on to take advantage though.

Same reason FaceTime never became an open standard (at least it wasn't last time I checked). It likely would cheapen the service (not price but quality) due to buggy implementations (e.g. third party chat or Facebook apps). This way Apple has a perk they can put on their feature list for people who buy iPads and iPhones (and iPod Touches if don't get killed).

How much you wanna bet that within the year $20 for unlimited texts becomes $20 for a capped amount od texts? With them charging a premium for anyone who texts more than the cap?

ATT has already done this with their so called "unlimited" data plans. Such a joke. Unlimited. Yeah riiiiiiight.

Its only going to get worse.

I am glad that Apple offers an unlocked iphone....because their exclusive deal with ATT has become a prison enabling ATT to pull this crap.

I know Apple offers Verizon now, but thats not the same. I travel alot, and want the freedom of a GSM phone.

I hear that Apple is working on a universal iphone. A true world wide standard with both chips inside, enabling it to go anywhere and join any provider. Dont know if it'll be the iphone 5 or iphone 6.....but its coming.

Iphone users wont be trapped in ATT anymore. There will be true options out there.

Heck, Apple has more cash than the United States of America....they should start their own Telecom Company!

Without this AA+ rated country, your country would be the equivalent of the upper north of Russia and we're still saving your £'s asses daily.
