Meagain - I must have the same issue on my ATT account. I purchased my 3G in August, have a plan well over $99/mo yet I don't even have the "early upgrade" pricing option. The only option I have for upgrade is the full price option.

I'm not that set on upgrading right now anyway but I would if I was able to at the subsidy price. I started reviewing my payments and best I can tell, I had *one* month last year where I must have spaced paying the bill and the following month paid two statements. My service was never interrupted. It was not an issue that I couldn't pay the bill, though.

I guess now I am a yucky customer to ATT. One incident. Oh well, just something to keep in mind when we can choose our carrier. I'm sure they are all similiar, but they tend to change their tune about loyalty when you are ready to walk.

Yes, pretty hard core if you ask me. The more I think about it and the more I do the math - I'm starting to like the idea of no-commitment. Phone will be fully upgradeable dirt cheap next year instead of paying $200 extra. It's a wash. If I pay $200 more now, then I don't have to pay $200 more next year. Further, there's that contract expiration potential with AT&T/Apple. Surely Apple will hit us for breaking the contract also. I wouldn't get hit.

I'm intrigued with the concept. Might go this route. If/when AT&T reverts my upgrade dates, so much the better. Then I'll ponder and minimally, sell my brand new unlocked 3G S for a princely sum.

I still haven't opened the box. It's still fully sealed in the bag.

Forgot to mention this.... My December upgrade eligible date? AT&T is claiming that is NOT $199/$299. It would be $399/$499 for me. Huh?

Yup, I have the same exact plan in my head. I am seriously considering the no-commitment full priced option, IF I could get a few hundred for my 3G. I think I may try Craigslist locally or something. My 3G is in great shape, no scratches. It has a brand new screen assembly becuase the home button started lagging and the Apple Store fixed it under warranty about a month ago.

So - I'd be happy with a few hundred for the 3G to put towards the S at full price. No contract and like you -- I would be good for the cheap upgrade option when the next model comes out. Also, I'm hoping that by that time we may have more choices for carriers. I've been satisfied with the ATT coverage in my area of my city...but there's definitely pockets where I hang that there's no service. I've heard good things about Verizon at least around here.

My stated updgrade date is Jan 2010...with no indication of what price point that means. Eh ... whatev's though. Come January the excitement for 3GS would be long gone for me as I am awaiting the next model.

What's further funny is I paid $700 for this phone. They are selling on Ebay for $800-$1000+. I'm stareing at this sealed box.... thinking.... thinking....
Wish AT&T would call me already. Then I can make a better decision.
Heck, even if I sold this sealed 32gb now, go back to the store and buy another for $700, I just made at least $100 bucks LOL

I love it!!! If you can make an extra hundred or so, why not go for it. I just bet there's quite a few of us naughty little customers in this boat, with the one incident of a missed payment or a payment mistake, etc. You would think ATT would want to get their grips on us for another 2 years right now too before they lose their exclusive agreement. But hey - whatever, right?

I went back for my husband's phone (being too upset the first time to realize I can get his with his still being out of town).... Apple guy laughed at my story and said "I guarantee you, you can get one for $299/399". I said nope - been there done that. So I told him just give me my big bucks phone for my hubby. He says - You want 2 then? Um - sure. I figure it's still sealed in box so I can take it back. I guess anyone can just buy them for the big bucks. The Apple guy said out of the bazillions of phones the store sold, he's not heard of anyone having to pay $599/$699.

I'm very done with AT&T. But I haz 3G S.

Why? People will be complaining next year so should we just tack another 2 more the following year too? Hell, keep going down the road?

I must say it would be very interesting to have 2 carriers doing the iPhone. What a show that would be.

AT&T let me upgrade my phone but my wife's iphone was denied for the upgrade they would only do the primary not the secondary line:mad:

um, yes. that's what december means.

I had no idea. I thought my December date (1.5 years after buying my 3g) was the $199/299. LOL You serious? Boy did I have THAT wrong. At what point then ARE we eligible for the subsidy price? Never? LOL 2 years when contract runs out?

I've decided it's best to do 'no-committment' and pay the $599/699 now and not sign another 2-year and be good to go next year vs. paying $399/499 AND paying an extra $200 next year. Or paying to get out of my contract if something changes. Since I hate AT&T at this point for dicking everyone around - I'm liking the concept of having autonomy.

jun/jul/aug dates are 199/299

What's infuriating is nobody knows whats RIGHT.

I was told by 4 reps that June/July/August 08 + >99 a month meant upgrade. My account has been "noted" and I am supposed to get reimbursed by Apple according to all the Premiere and regualar AT&T reps.

Do I think Apple will just reimburse me? Absolutely not.

Do I intend to get the reimbursement from AT&T anyway? Damn skippy. I will do whatever I have to to get the reimbursement because they told me repeatedly that they would and noted my account. I don't care if the reps didn't have the right information - AT&T will either stand by their word to me or they will loose me as a customer.

It's not about the $200 for me, it's the principle - and it's about standing behind what you tell your customers. I will gladly pay the $175 termination fee and walk away if they refuse to give me my credit. I figure, either way I am out money.

They told me that all over the place also and it's in the "notes".
Guess what? It means nothing.

So what IS the deal then? Say a person bought 3g on launch and is eligible in December. What do they have to pay in December? Cuz AT&T is insisting I'd have to pay $399/499 then. 1.5 years after my purchase.

I'd be surprised if Apple reimbursed you. For every iPhone it sells, Apple sends the customers information over to AT&T, who sends back the price of the iPhone for that specific customer. It's an automated system, and having "notes" on your account doesn't seem to factor in. It's so automated that Apple Store managers don't have the ability to override that AT&T-set price.

IMO, AT&T needs to be the one reimbursing you.

Hope AT&T works it out for you so you don't have to ETF and leave. :(

is there any way... or any service, that can hold your phone number during any type of wonky transition for a couple days? The problem is losing your phone number. Must be a way around that.

Aristobrat,

I appreciate the sentiment, and I agree with you completely. The way the AT&T people explained it to me, I paid Apple when I pre-ordered through Apple's website. I was told by the Apple rep that within 48 hours of Friday, AT&T would send over information to Apple about who is due a reimbursement for overpaying because of the policy change. AT&T claims that because I paid Apple, they are the ones who will reimburse me.

The AT&T Floor Support Supervisor (who counseled my premiere rep) told me that I would likely have to contact Apple and tell them that my account was noted to be eligible..blah..blah. Essentially, because I am caught in the middle, AT&T put the onus on me to resolve their mismanaged policy change.

The phone reps/store managers/policy statements/and computerized eligibility system where NEVER on the same page and ultimately the customers paid the price.

This was a cluster f**k from the beginning and I don't see why I should be the one to bear the burden of all of this. AT&T needs to step up. If they don't - they don't deserve my patronage.

I agree that the system and NOBODY seems to agree. I have spent over $99 per month for two years with iPhone and iPhone 3G, plus I have a data card at $60 plus tax per month. I bought the 3G the day it came out, and the original the day it came out. The date showing is 12/12/09 for upgrade. I called them and they cannot do anything, but say the system updates every 48 hours, so any that aren't right get "flagged" for checking and should correct after 48 hours... YEAH RIGHT! I call it AT&T giving us the shaft, as usual!

Xerenthar is just a big-headed moron, so don't pay any attention to what he says.

(Don't hold it against him though; it's not his fault he was born in a blue state!)

(But it is his fault that he goes to Michigan, so feel free to bash away.)

A fox "news" fan calling someone a moron. Priceless.
