My rep has credited my account, but noted that 'this is a one time courtesy...we will not be waiving this fee in the future.' They waived the $18 fee for me last year as well, but I did that over the phone.

Well, better now than never, right?

"We'll go easy this time, but we're bending you over again next year." is what it sounds like. There's no reason at all to charge it to begin with. Like the "activation fee". I activate the phone myself. I should charge you, lol.

Was going to go this route but I'm going to be cancelling my order and pulling my line from ATT all together in about 45 minutes because they refuse to give any updates on my order. Not to mention they cost me money every minute they don't hand over my new device as I'm trying to sell my 5S. So needless to say I'll be selling that and getting out of ATT for at least one line. All the others I'll pull in January once their contracts are up. They messed up so badly this time and I'm not sticking around.

They certainly seem to have cracked down... they all start with 'it is a valid fee' almost as if it's being copy-pasted. I'm currently on agent #2 trying to get them to budge.

I really have to agree with other people on here - it seems their long game is to gradually jack up the upgrade fees and keep new features (FaceTime over cellular, tethering, etc) excluded from the grandfathered plans until everyone switches to Next out of frustration. It certainly seems like every time I go into a store or have to call/chat they try to get me to give up my unlimited data... as if they instruct employees to steer people into Next/Mobile Share plans no matter what. Frustrating.

It took me about a half hour chat to eventually get my two upgrade fees waived. The agent eventually went to his highest level support who he said had the authority to waive the fees.

Worked perfectly over chat the first time. They brought up that I used my one time waiver ($18) during my iPhone 5 upgrade fee but I explained I'm a loyal customer from the iPhone 3G days. She talked to her supervisor & gave me a credit rather than a Waiver. I checked my bill -$40 credit! Winning!

Thanks
MemphisDave

I go through this every year. You just have to stay polite but wear them down with logic:

Edit: Also my chat rep is lonely...she has been talking to me for 5 minutes about Android vs iPhone (I'm at work and just answer periodically).

you had to work for that! good for you!

I got my fees waived twice before so not sure if they'll do it again. Plus they pushed my full-upgrade up by 7 months so I could get my iPhone 6 for $299. That alone is worth me at least paying the activation fee for it haha.

How did you get your upgrade fee waived?

Just talked to my ATT customer rep, they can't waive it because the upgrade fee wasn't generated in the latest bill yet, and I would have to come back next month basically.

I recall Iv'e seen some people here saying that they had their fee waived...
how did y'all do that?

Verizon said they couldn't waive mine (called and chatted with two different reps) but they were able to give me 2 additional GB of data per month for 12 months. :)

How many data do you have per month? I have the grandfathered unlimited but unless I take a long road trip where I constantly stream videos, I usually get only 3-5g worth of datas. (used to be less, but with auto upgrade and other stuff it went up..) still, only got throttled once or twice.

I don't have the thread URL, but it is stated that is much harder to get the fee waived after the fact rather than before.

Yeah? I guess the rep that talked to me would have waived it for me. Oh well...I didn't even know you can do it before hand, the rep (could be lying) said she can't credit anything in advance.

1GB normally, and I don't even use that much. After buying the new iPhone, Verizon gave everyone another 1GB of data as a promotion, so that in addition to the other 2GB they gave me due to them not waiving the upgrade fee, I now have 4GB of data I won't use. lol

When I talked to AT&T after upgrading to the 5, I told them I was basically being penalized by being charged $40, and that there was no justification for it. I waited from 5-8AM, went right in, bought my phone and left, as well as signing a contract guaranteeing money to them for the next 2 years

I had to dig my heels in, but it was necessary because there is no excuse for them charging $40 to give them money! Period!

exactly, but I also heard that they would only waive it once and if you have requested before, that's the end of it and they won't waive it any more?

That might be true. I don't know. It depends on the rep.

The best thing to do is not back down. Of course be polite and respectful, but keep repeating yourself until the rep either waives it, or gets a supervisor, and then wear their nerves thin lol #

I mean, it's only once every 2 years. I never call them otherwise. It's not like we're calling every month asking for credits.

Just be persistent and be prepared to repeat yourself until they get exhausted and waive it lol it can be done! #
