Do people actually read the headlines? I think the article headline makes it clear this isn't the cable company but the media company.

I think that because TW Cable has left such a bad taste in so many peoples' mouths over the years, that's the first "Time Warner" that comes to mind.

But you're right. The article is pretty self-explanatory.

How is that really different in the end? They will still control the content.

In 1983, 90% of American media sources were owned by 50 companies.

In 2011, 90% of American media sources were owned by 6 companies.

This is why politicians of both sides love these media mega mergers. It's easier to control the narrative when there are only 5 media companies versus the 50 media companies we had 30 years ago. These media mega mergers are the single biggest threat to our democracy.

This would suck. All those channels would be taken away from alternate cord-cutting streaming services. AT&T is much too greedy to share.

Crap like this should be barred before wasting all our time.

The Telcos wanted deregulation through breaking up their Ma Bell monopoly to avoid regulations. Now they want to be Ma Bell and Pa Broadcasting.

How about standard, strictly enforced regulations opening up all Municipalities to distribute Data, Voice and Digital Content across the entire backbone that We The Tax Payers subsidized so we can go to Apple, Google, whatever, with all players required to meet caps, accept standard rates non-negotiable and then just maybe then I'd be interested in this insane merger being entertained.

As other have stated, yeah this blows.

AT&T is the worst of the bunch imo, even worse then Comcast. I've personally never really had any major issues with Comcast, although they do have there own bag of worries. But I cancelled DirecTV as soon as it got bought by AT&T. It really is becoming a concern. AT&T is clearly trying to position itself towards the OTT transition. They've got the distributor in DirecTV, and now they're looking for content.

I really think/hope regulators are gonna give them scrutiny over this. Most of AT&T technology is becoming archaic. They were the leader in home phone and telephony services. Now that the markets are shifting towards IP structures, they need to change to survive. But the downside is, it means AT&T is becoming a bigger Goliath.

This crap just needs to stop. The FCC needs a moratorium on any company who controls the transmission of broadband or media services to own or invest in any content creation.
Take a step back and think how backwards this is. In order to get more competition, you want to prevent investment in content creation?

This really, really needs to stop. I'm not inherently against buyouts and mergers, but when you have monolithic-sized companies buying other monolithic-sized companies, sometimes the SAME company buying multiple companies, you realize there's an issue. Heck, at this rate, we eventually are going to have just one company that controls all of the media in the country. And let's not even discuss how scary that'd be.

Now we know why money is not being spent in network improvements.
Not sure if this is serious, but the two have nothing to do with each other really. AT&T can afford to make whatever network improvements it wants - they're financing this with debt, and they can finance improvements with debt. They borrow very cheaply, and throw off a ton of cash every year.

I want to stop the pipe companies from investing in content creation companies. When AT&T owns HBO what is going to happen to HBO Now? Will it still be available on competitive devices and platforms?

Root Sports is my local regional. They are owned by DirecTV. That means they will never be available on Sling TV. See how that works?

In 5 years there's only going to be one company for every service you could ever need

Am I the ONLY 1 that thinks the movie WALL-E nailed it on the head with the "Buy N Large" corporation on the Axiom lol :p

Seriously. Why do we want Apple running AT&T? Why do think that's something Apple will be good at?

I'm curious of this as well.
Maybe a larger Apple cult?
