However, AT&T is now offering $1,000 for/from the iPhone 12(PM), which is a big shift from previous years
Just a reminder that AT&T often changes the offer after the first few weeks of a new iPhone being available. I expect the offer to be modified later next month.

I’m guessing AT&T (and possibly Apple) is requiring IMEI input to ensure customers commit to trading in their existing phones, rather than exploring cheaper options on eBay.
Not exactly. Both AT&T and Apple are trying to further automate the trade-in process. Before this year neither asked for the IMEI and the third-party companies had to manually enter the IMEI on receipt of your trade-in. There is no bar code to scan like your original iPhone box which has all the key items as bar codes on the bottom of the box.

I think it's just to identify and verify whether your device is eligible for the trade-in promotion, and if so, how much bill credits the device is eligible for under the promotion. As @dave006 said, they didn't ask for the IMEI before but they did ask to brand and model (and maybe storage capacity) of the device.

Ordered 3 iPhone pro max on Monday stil no movement from ATT. Anyone gotten updates on orders placed after Friday? Kind of surprised with all the reports of lower than expected sales.

Have you received an eMail from AT&T with a Subect: We got your order! ?

You will not get anything until the iPhones reach AT&T from China and they are scanned in to inventory. That's when you might see a SMS Txt from AT&T, FedEX or UPS update about labels printed.

Note: you need either the FedEx app or the UPS app to see these intermediate updates.

Dave

Yes att order status shows shipping oct 21st hoping they will change order status soon.
Just to let you know that Oct 21st ship date is based on when AT&T is expected to ship the devices to you from their location(s) in the US. They bulk order from Apple and they wait until their bulk orders are assembled in China for Apple by Foxconn.

Are you locked to AT&T Direct delivery or have you considered ordering from Apple for Direct delivery or In Store Pick Up (ISPU)?

You get the same AT&T Carrier financing when ordering from Apple directly.

So I’m still confused on the whole turn in old phone for AT&T Next. In the box has a label tape and a sheet stating send your old phone with the pre paid label.

Now others and AT&T are saying a trade in Kit will come in the mail after I receive my new device. Which is it?? Someone has to have the definite answer.

I just got the extra label with the phone. No additional box. No cardboard sleeve. I’d like to know, too.

My Box has a white cut out insert at the bottom that has directions to turn in old phone.

My label says ship to Flower Mound TX UPS label Return service.

In the past, I always had to call AT&T to email me a label to print out to attach to my own box (used amazon box usually) in order to return my trade in. No kit ever came in the mail. I did receive padded small envelopes go my iPhones once, but the post office refused them as they were too small and fragile for phone return. I had to repackage them in a larger box then take them the post office. This time around, there are instructions in the box my 16 pro max iPhones came in telling me to use the same box, but I always figured that was to be used for returning the new iPhone you just received if you didn’t like it or want it.

No confusion on my end.

The instructions are for Next Up/Next Up Anytime and say explicitly to use the box the new iPhone came in, along with using the included shipping label (they even bold that part twice, haha!!)

NextUp/Next Up Anytime is an entirely different program from ‘trading in’ an iPhone for bill credits, maybe that’s where the confusion is coming from??

I put the old iPhone inside the new iPhone box, tape it shut, then put that box inside the cardboard shipping box. Seal it with tape, apply the included label, and off to the shipper (which has been the USPS or UPS in the past).

The box your new iPhone arrived in (Brown cardboard box) contains your trade-in details it is the kit.

Did you read the 2 partial page pre-printed slips of paper in your box. You use the same brown cardboard box. It has a strip of packing tape to reseal the box and a Trade-in UPS prepaid shipping label.

It should have also contained a white cardboard insert with a sleeve to slide in your trade-in iPhone. In some cases the white cardboard insert is in the top of the box or at the bottom of the box.

That is the wrong label. Trade-ins go to Tennessee. New device returns and turn-ins (AT&T next up) go back to AT&T in Texas.

Mine doesn’t have a strip of packing tape or the white cardboard insert, but I do have the (assuming correct?) trade-in shipping label.

Attached is what I have. I also have the actual white Apple box the phone came in.

Do I put the old phone in the Apple box, then in the brown box, then tape it up, then put the label on and ship it?

Is it still possible to simply bring my old phone to a legit AT&T store and process the trade in there?

My expected shipping date is showing Oct 21st.

Let's backup a few steps. Are you on the Next program or just a regular Installment contract and trading in your old iPhone for the up to $1000 credit?

Do I put the old phone in the Apple box, then in the brown box, then tape it up, then put the label on and ship it?
No they don't want your new Apple iPhone box. Just the brown cardboard box with the correct UPS return label based on if you are on the Next program or just a normal trade-in. You can always order a new Return Kit

Again are you on the Next Program of a normal Installment agreement with a trade-in for the up to $1000 account credits?

Where did your new iPhone ship from and was it UPS or FedEx?

Dave

Thanks for confirming. I upgraded with Apple
and called AT&T to get a label to ship my Next Up phone back. It is a UPS label going back to Flower Mound, TX so I guess it’s good. Whew!

I’m on the Next program. My new phone came via UPS from Fort Worth, TX.

Ordered a 256 Gb Pro Max through Costco.

Was thinking long and hard about going with Plus instead, as it probably has a better battery life… but I do want the best camera setup that Apple has to offer.

Apparently I may get the phone in a month…

I always put the old iPhone inside the new iPhone box, tape it, then that box inside the cardboard box.

I don’t want my pristine NextUp trade-in bouncing around inside the box and getting damaged. Never had a problem.

The instructions do say, “use the same box your new Phone came in”.

ETA: FWIW, Only one of my NextUp iPhones (out of two) came with tape.

16PM has five to six hours better battery life than the 16 Plus. You made a good choice!!

Then you have a Next return that is going back to Texas. That explains your different box and the Return Address to Flower Mound, TX. That also explains the bad packaging you received.

The standard trade-in returns are a bigger brown box with the tape strip and the white cardboard sleeve and a UPS return label to Mt. Juliet, TN

ETA: still learning to spell Flower..

That refers to the brown cardboard box it was shipped in lol. They don’t get to have my Apple box.
That’s one way of reading it if you want to keep the Apple box, haha!!

I read it my way…saves me having to throw away the Apple box, haha!!

I’m wondering the same thing. My 3 phones all say Oct 21st can’t believe that’s correct. Thinking of cancelling
