AT&T - iPhone 3G on Backorder for 5-7 Days.

Haha I hear you man. At least they're not as bad as Dell. I dropped over 3grand on a new laptop over two weeks ago and it's still in the build stage ;-)
First time poster
Hey everyone I am a first time poster, long time viewer. Here is my story. I ordered an 8gig on 7/16 12:32om from the Boylston street AT&T store in Boston. This store is just one block away from the second largest Apple store in the world. The only reason I went to At&t to buy was for the monthly discount on my bill. I was told 10-21 days when i placed the order. It was very frustrating to walk daily past the Apple store and ask how many they had in stock, always to hear "a lot" The lines were never more then 30mins either. On Tuesday of this week Apple had 40+ 8 gig phones. I told them all about my DF order and they said they would let me buy one, but i should try and cancel first. I then walked the block down the street to At&t to cancel. I was first told that I could not. He gave me some BS reason how it was in the system and I would have to pay all of these charges and now that I was part of At&t I would have to break contract. I never signed up for a plan when I got the phone. I only paid for it. He then said I could return it when it came in, but then I would be really screwing the person who sold it to me. I then asked well haven't I been screwed over? He had no answer then said do what you want in a pissy voice. Whatever the reason was I decided to just leave my DF alone and wait it out. That was Tuesday and I was #39 in line for my order. It seemed as if the Boston store was only getting 2-3 phones a day. I told myself it will get here when it does. I looked this morning and it was still on backorder. It came off backorder around noon today, but it did that almost daily. I just checked my status again and I was shocked to see that it shipped!! there must have been like 25 orders that shipped today as well. Looks like I will have my 8gig tomorrow. Keep the faith everyone. By the way, this was way faster then the 10-21 days I was told.

Screw windows.. I only run windows on my mac for 1 stinkin program that I need.. I gave my $1200 dell notebook to my sister which took 3 months to get...
Shortly after I bought my first mac If you need windows for apps just get a mac and run parallels or boot camp. thats what I do on my macbook and mac mini
Damn your lucky.. I wish the apple stores in my area had iPhones!! I would say screw AT&T. I live near the Daytona beach area, FL and have 3 apple stores in my area where I live and work.. every time I call, they are always out...

Similar situation. Ordered a 16gb black at cambridgeside on 7/14 still hasnt shipped yet. couldnt take the wait and snagged one from boylston on 7/19... I canceled my FAN discount while online and put it back on after. My att order still hasn't shipped and i'm not to worried about it.
only three shipped in my area... but what I have noticed is that the next day more orders will show "shipped" from the day before
Example 7/22/08 I checked around 10pm and it was 1 shipped. Next day it showed 5 from 7/22/08. we could be lucky!

Ah, but I like dell and windows. Or maybe I'm just too used to them, but I suppose this old dog can't learn new tricks anymore. Besides, dell's given me pretty rock solid technical support in the past, so I figure I can put up with talking with a few hodgi's while getting my system in.
Good luck on the wait... Yeah.. ive preferred Dell before I discovered the amazing things a mac can do. they do provide good computers.. but as a web developer/graphic designer I need a mac.. its so much more efficient

I ordered a 16GB Black iPhone from a store in New Orleans Monday, July 14. After this experience, I hate AT&T, but at least I have a bit of good news: My phone shipped today. I will be picking it up tomorrow. This better be worth it.
AT&T is letting people check by order number, so shouldn't whereismydamniphone be up again? I guess I can delete my tracking AppleScripts now anyway, but I was just saying...

Cancelling a DF
For those of you who have thought about cancelling your order, think again. Because you can't cancel your order until it arrives at the store, for those being charged before and at the time of shipping, your still out that money. And if you still want to cancel your order, you are then going to be charged a restocking fee.

This is totally untrue. AT&T CAN CANCEL DF ORDERS. They don't do it often because a) they lose money b) some reps don't know how. Your card should not be charged until the phone ships - and once the phone ships then you can't cancel and must wait 7 days to refuse the shipment.
You will only be charged a restocking fee if you open the box. If you refuse the shipment they will credit the money back to your account and you will be fine.
Yep. I canceled my 16gb black order on Wednesday and put in a new order for a 16gb white

i hate this, i checked the herebethedragon site on where i fall at at my at&t store and im number 29, and they are not even doing the orders in order there is people who just ordered there iphone (same as mine) on the 21st and alrighty gotten theirs im ticked about it

People have suggested that the white iphones ship a lot earlier than the black ones. Perhaps thats why people ahead of you have already gotten theirs. Bear in mind that the order status checker is not iphone specific but is rather for ALL DF orders for ALL phones that att carries.
how do you know if its iphone orders? and mine is the one they have most of the 8GB one

does AT&T have a hold on your card too?? I thought by this it ment mine was gona ship today...
usually my holds go through the next day at 12am.. so tonight it should go through..
