please someone explain

Please someone can explain about these Apple sims?

Before getting an unlocked Ipad it was possible to use any sim in the world. I don’t understand what this Apple sim is all about and we have to buy one??

If I travel I buy a local sim, I don’t want my iPad to be locked to any sim

I read that Apple will be offering replacement Apple SIMs for free. Can anybody confirm this?

Why is this even news? Why were you all shocked? This was expected. This is standard for AT&T to do things like this.

And that is exactly what I expected to happen. Too bad Verizon opted out of this. I would easily go back & forth between them & TMO depending on travel needs.

If one does go with TMO for US use, would one be able to buy data when traveling overseas with a local carrier w/o having to swap SIM cards? This would be an exceptional feature.

Verizon opted out since their network is a CDMA network and not a GSM which doesn't support SIM cards in the first place if I remember correctly.

Incorrect, Verizon operates both a legacy CDMA network (which their current switched phone service and EVDO data is using) and their GSM LTE network which does use a SIM card.

Source: my coworker who has Sprint and an LTE phone (GS3 I think). He only gets LTE in the very northern tip of San Francisco. In San Jose: NOTHING. Sorry the facts so inconveniently get in the way of your shilling.

Shilling? I'm not a Sprint employee... just a user. I have the map in front of me right now, I'm working with facts here on a tower-by-tower basis - you're going off what your friend says.

They have an old, single-band phone that very well might be defective for all you know. San Jose and SF are completely slathered in Sprint LTE.

The Sprint hate here is ridiculous...

T-Mobile's 5gb for 5 months for only $10 had me more suspicious:p

This is irritating. I was loving this feature because it would have enabled me to procure local broadband when traveling overseas without buying a nano-sim every time.

I have AT&T because the $30 unlimited legacy plan is a phenomenally good deal.

Not sure what to do now. Could switch to VZ but it will undoubtedly raise my monthly cost.

Just use your existing AT&T SIM (or get a new one) and save the Apple SIM for when you're traveling. However, right now it's only useful in the UK, since no carriers in other countries support the Apple SIM yet.

but it comes out to 1GB per month for 5 months. It is a strange plan. What happens if you run out of data?
It's a 150-day pass with 5GB for $10. If you run out, you need to buy a new pass.

You have to be kidding me, AT&T... When will carriers stop doing stupid things like this?

When customers stop supporting it.

I moved from Verizon to T-Mobile when the iphone 6 came out. I had been with Verizon since the late 90s - well when it was Airtouch cellular - whenever that was.

These business models wont change as long as customers support it.

I bought my phone - I am on a no contract plan with T-Mobile - nothing is locked - and I couldnt be happier.

Not strange at all. You have 150 Days to use up the entire 5GB, you can do that in a day, a week a month or 5 month it doesn’t matter.
But when the 5Gb are up your internet stops working and you will have to buy another pass and than you can use another 5GB.
So the 150 days aren’t really the length of the plan but more the time span you have until the 5GB expire.

It is a very very good deal.

1. AT&T warns you the SIM will be locked and the user must accept the terms.

2. If you want AT&T service and don't like the terms, turn it around on them. Tell AT&T you want their service and want them to provide the SIM because it'll be locked. Pretty simple.

3. Actually maybe the user strategy should be that everyone should go into AT&T and say they want their service and demand a SIM, then put it in your drawer once you get home. Maybe do this once a week.

Incredible deal indeed!

Screw AT&T! I'll be dumping them (for good) when I upgrade to my next iPhone. As for the iPad Air 2, when I get one I'll be getting a Verizon SIM.

AT&T can kiss my ass!

When the only alternatives are two companies with crappy networks, T-Mobile and Sprint, most people don't have a choice. People like you that act like it's no big deal for people to just up and switch or not choose AT&T or Verizon don't deal in reality. I'm on T-Mobile like you and it's great as long as I don't ever leave the city I live in. This is not just the customers that need to do something about it, the politicians that Verizon and AT&T pay off to allow them to collude with one another stop customers from having any real influence. It doesn't matter where we go, AT&T and Verizon will figure out yet another way to screw everyone over. You're grossly oversimplfying the situation because you don't understand it.

That is an amazing deal!
