Screw those clowns. Went to VirginMO and will stay put. Coverage is fine for me and it is fast enough on data. Never been impressed for that whopping 2GB's of data (from the big 2) for obscene prices anyway.

Ummmm what's the big issue?

Just get a new sim. It's what the rest of the world has to do.

AT&T IS NOT LOCKING THE iPAD!

But they are locking the sim. It's not theirs, they haven't sold it to me, or leased it to me or even given it to me, but they are rendering it useless for it's intended purpose. Hence property damage, no matter how little the cost.

Or is it ok if the att employees throw gravel at your car bit by bit because it doesn't do much damage?

Yes, that is my question -- actually, 1) will Apple make them available and 2) at what price.

Does ATT give out free SIMs? I might try and see if they will give or sell me one. I really don't want to "burn" the universal one as I'm going to London next year and it will come in handy.

I actually am surprised Apple is going to charge for them, as I don't think any of the GSM carriers charge for them normally.

This maybe a silly reply but where is the sim slot on the iPad air 2 as I don't see it on the side or bottom , so does this mean the sim is already inside of the device ???

OK, so we pay for the SIM from a different supplier, we pay for the cellular modem, we pay full price for the device and AT&T wants to lock it? Ugh.

Looks like AT&T is afraid of competition. Offer better plans and you won't have to worry about your customers fleeing to other carriers.

I guess you never owned a computer with a cd/dvd drive that would lock into a region based on the CDs/DVDs you put in......

get a new sim , fixed. Or don't accept the conditions .... No one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you

I assume apple approved this...

It might well be a concession by Apple for AT&T to support such a device, but then, that defeats most of the point of this innovation. It's not hard to find places that read much better signal for one carrier than others.

I wonder what another Apple SIM costs.

This seems like a good idea. I've always been able to get free SIM's from AT&T and if they want your device on their network, they'll probably do it.

AT&T, Comcast, etc. Any company that engages in these punitive practices that try to force customers to stay and squeeze more money out of them are automatically on my 'blacklist'. As in they will never get another dime out of me. These companies respond to one thing - fear of profit loss. Punish them by spending your hard-earned money elsewhere people.

I don't understand the locking... Regardless of what I do with my device I'm probably in a contract to keep paying <insert Company> money or will have to buy out the contract.

Is ATT subsidizing iPads like they are iPhones?
If so, then It's not that big of a deal to me I guess. I go buy a SIM and swap it out, probably better to do that if you're going to be traveling internationally anyways.

I really do not understand the outrage.

Your buying a device that costs between approx £400 - £700 pounds and worrying about a sim that is free - £2

When I got my iPad with the universal apple sim , I just threw it out and put in my own sim.

People in the US please explain the issue

I'm sure apple will give u another universal sim if it's such a burden

You can get AT&T SIMs at any AT&T or Apple store. I was able to pick one up at an AT&T store for free last year, but I also heard that they sometimes charge $10. If you have to use AT&T, I'd highly recommend this as long as we don't know if and for how much Apple offers replacements for the Apple SIM.

It is simple: I often travel internationally and I was hoping that the Apple SIM would eventually allow me to use prepaid offers from carriers abroad without having to hunt down and activate a local SIM in every country (which can be a huge pain). This is of course assuming that more carriers than EE UK would get on board over time, and that none of them follows this misguided AT&T policy ...
