No. You only have to meet your minimum requirement for number of payments to upgrade. If you are on the Next 12 for example, you will need to make 12 of the 20 scheduled payments.I currently have an iPhone 6 on ATT Next with $299 remaining balance. Do I have to pay off the balance before upgrading to a new iPhone 6S+ on a Next plan?
If you are in possession of the phone I'm guessing they would let you pay it off. I think they would prefer if you paid it off and kept it. This would free them from the process of taking it in and finding it a new home.Question. Let's say I upgrade to the new iPhone. Can I decide AFTER to pay off the balance and keep it even though they have already processed the upgrade?

I dialed *639# from my iPhone and this is the message I got from ATT:
This line may be eligible for an upgrade after 2 more installment payment(s). To become eligible for an upgrade now you must trade in the current AT&T Next device in good physical and fully functional condition and pay $74.90. Or, upgrade without a trade-in by paying the remaining installment balance of $374.50.
Does this mean I can pay pre-pay the 2 more installments now and be eligible to upgrade to the 6S+ using Next immediately?
I think you might have an option to pay during the pre-order process as well but most people are not taking that chance. I paid my next months balance already so that my 12th payment has been made and verified I can upgrade. It sounds like you (PTVMan) will need to reach out to AT&T and try to make a payment if you want to update. PTVMan has two payments to go so it will take a little more work to get this done but its possible.I just paid $42.50 to make my line eligible for the new iPhone pre-order, if you want to pre-order the new iPhone you will have to make the payment and have your line eligible for upgrade.

My bill normally processes on the 18th but was ready three days ago so I paid it. One option you have that I have seen on another thread is to act like you are going to upgrade today using Next. The process will tell you that you have to make a payment of $47.45 which you pay right away. Once you do, you exit the process and don't move into the step of selecting a new device.Did you pay just the $42.50 or you just paid your bill? I just got off the phone with AT&T and they told me I couldn't pay just the $47.45 that I owe seprately. I have 1 payment remaining of $47.45 but the only way I see to pay that early is if I order a new phone at the same time.
My bill doesn't usually come out till the 19th, which is 1 day after the iPhone comes out (assuming Apple sticks to releasing it the next Friday after announcement.)
A few dings will fine. It has to include a battery, break free screen and no water damage. Wear is normal. How poor/fair condition can your phone be in for them to still take it back after you've met the payment requirements in order to trade in for the new phone? i have a few dings on mine.

No. The remaining payments are forgiven. You will start the payment process again with a new device. In exchange for the remaining payments, they get your current phone which they will sell for the amount roughly equal to what you owe.I called ATT and the rep told me that all I have to do is go into an ATT store, make the 2 payments and the line will be available for upgrade. So, do the 8 remaining payments get added to an upgraded device/agreement?

If you pay your device off, its yours to keep. If you only make the minimum payments required to upgrade you have to turn it in. You also have the choice of keeping your device and continuing to make the monthly payment until its paid for. Lastly, you could add a line to your account and add a second device and have both. Lots of options but if you want to use Next and have only made the minimum required payments you will have to give them your phone in exchange for a new phone and new Next payment plan.Hmm, for some reason I didn't realize that I had to turn in my current device. That changes things for me, I think.

Well...I think we are missing a part here. If you make two payments, become upgrade eligible, we assume that means you are going to trade in your phone. If you're not trading your phone in, then you are not upgrading. If you want to have your current phone and a new phone then you are adding a new device to your account. If this is what you want, then you have no need to make two more payments now. Just keep paying as you are and add a new line to your account. Upgrade implies a trade-in when talking about Next. Thanks for helping. If I read this sentence correctly I can make the 2 payments totaling $74.90, become upgrade eligible for a new device AND continue to pay for the current Next iPhone plan? Sorry to be so obtuse.

They continue but cost you less the amount of your payments. If I decide to go the route of adding a line what happens to my current device and telephone # when I pay off the Next installments?

Not to hijack the thread, but are subsidies still an option (including with pre-ordering) or is this a thing of the past? Oops, sorry did not mean to reply to your post.So if I've paid 12 of my 20, and I then pre-order on Saturday, when/how do we 'turn in' our current devices?
