At&t Now has a website to request an unlock

I'm confused how it works. I've heard AT&T/Apple put something into the system, you plug your phone into iTunes and voila. But then today I was told you actually have to type some codes into the phone.

My question is, are both right? Are there different types of unlocks from AT&T?

No, there's no codes to input in the phone.
AT&T submits the IMEI unlock request to apple and then your restore or activate it on itunes and its factory unlocked.

Hmmmm, then if he's telling me I need to enter codes into the phone, perhaps I should question him.

Then he's probably clueless:D
Usually for most cellphones you put in a 4 or 6 digit code somewhere in settings to unlock it.
But the iphone doesnt work like that.

WOW. This is great news. Any chance Sprint will follow unlocking their 4S, so I can later use it on T-mobile once I complete the contract?

No.
Sprint will only unlock it for international use but it will not work with any other US carrier but Sprint.

I'm outside of the US now. Do you think they'll be able to unlock my 3G?
Previous ATT customer and phone is waaay past contract.
Currently it's software unlock and JB. Do I have to do a restore?

Why not give that website link a try?
You can just deactivate it with redsnow and then activate it with itunes.
Without having to restore and redo it all over again.

Cool! So after unlocking I can use this phone with any carrier or for international use?

Any GSM carrier.
International, US, Russian etc...

Anything that makes unlocking our phones easier is always great. I wish more cell phone carriers would do this also. IMO everyone should unlock their phones when they are able to do so since it increases the resell value. I also think it's shameful that some carriers don't fully unlock our phones even when our contracts are done with.

For a long time, at&t unlocking the iphone was like finding a unicorn--pretty damn impossible. I figured that at&t's gsm exclusivity finally ended, which is why we're getting the unlock from them.
CDMA is not an open technology, at least not the way the major carriers implement it. That's why you can never get a full unlock from them. Who knows? Maybe there's a contract that keeps the unlock international only for several years, but I doubt it; I think they're just being dicks.

Well I have locked iPhone from AT&T. my brother bought it for me in Hong Kong and the seller showed him the iPhone with ultrasn0w so he thought it was simfree (he has no idea what is jailbreak).

Now AT&T want a recipt which i don't have and im not living in the US.

any ideas how to solve it ? I would like to stop jailbreaking. I waited 3-4 months until I could get iOS 5 and i hated every day of it.

Thanks

Just as a little warning, I tried to use this web page to request an unlock for my iPhone 4 about a week ago. I received a confirmation email saying that the request was approved and that I should try the backup/restore procedure after 24 hours. I tried it several times over the past week but the unlock did not work.

Today I called 611. They looked up my IMEI and found that the unlock had actually not been issued, i.e. the request through the web page did not work. They did it again through their system while I was on the phone, and half an hour later the unlock worked without issue. :)

Does your phone become disabled after unlocking it? If I unlock my phone through AT&T will I still be able to use the phone? Does unlocking the phone change your current plan in any way? I've searched for these answers and couldn't find anything.

No, it does not change anything. Your phone and current plan will continue to work as before.

Usually, ATT sends some stuff to Apple regarding the device IMEI, then Apple does some magic, and finally you plug it into iTunes and a message pops up saying your phone is unlocked. But, who knows what happens now.

Question: What does this do to the resale value of the phone?

My wife and I both have 64GB iPhone 4S from AT&T, hoping to sell both and get two iPhone 5. Problem is, one of us is only eligible for the discounted upgrade (subsidized + $250) and the other is only eligible for full retail.

Just submitted our IMEIs for unlock and wondering if eBaying these as "factory unlocked" will be enough to cover our upgrades...

You are not going to get your iPhone 4S unlocked right now. You have not met the contract requirements. Did you read the information on the web page?

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/

Relevant section: AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances:

...All contract obligations, including any term commitment, associated with the device to be unlocked have been fully satisfied; and The iPhone has not been reported lost or stolen.

If both of your AT&T iphones are still under contract then they wont unlock them.
Not unless your contract is up or you upgrade and sign a new contract with another device.
