Just chatted with AT&T who offered a hack to upgrade two existing lines but get the promo with a new line activation....

1. Start a new line and get a new phone
2. Upgrade existing line A with 2nd phone
3. Replace new number with number from existing line B (I didn't know this was possible), so that the new line has your old number
4. Cancel old line B (which no longer has the number you want to keep)

I didn't pull the trigger yet.
AFAIK, the moment you cancel line with new cell number - they would consider you cancelled the original deal - you would have to pay remaining balances, etc. The contract is tracked by phone cell numbers, not physical phones.

I'm sure they want to push more phones but its christmas season. Impulse buying everywhere. I could add 4 lines to my account possibly before christmas (only 1 would be new to att). Offer people a "deal" have them locked in for 30 months. Probably not a deal for members of this forum but for $$ conscious people that don't care about "new" all the time it works. My in laws both currently use 3gs. I think they will make the 6s last for 30 months and probably another 30 after that.

port your number out to google voice if you really wanna keep that old number. you can then still forward calls from gv to your new # ?

My wife is the only person who regularly calls me - I just updated the other 5 people who called me infrequently! I mostly iMessage...

Isn't it illegal to have a greater than 2 year contract in the US? Isn't that what this is?

It isn't a contract but financing the phone over 30 months.

I did this deal yesterday. I traded in our Next iPhone 6's and cancelled my number. Got a iPhone 6s Plus 64gb for my Mom and a iPhone 6s Plus 128gb with new number for me. Both are over 30 months. I am getting a $21 something credit for my phone so means I have to pay about $10 a month for the phone. This ends up saving us about $40 a month on my bill and we got two new phones.

its worked for me :)

I have 5 lines on my plan and 3 that are off contract/next. I canceled one of the lines upgraded one of the other two to the next plan and they gave me a free iPhone 6s. I still have one line that is off contract. That one will be for when the 7 comes out :). Tho at this point all the phones are at least iPhone 6. So I don't see a reason to upgrade unless one of my phones break

So I paid tax for the iPhone 6s plus 64gb. They gave just made me pay $15 for the new phone line as I canceled one of them and an extra $100 for the 64gb iPhone 6s

If you haven't pulled yet. I wouldn't pull its not possible to switch numbers on lines like that. You'll be stuck with another line on your account before you know it. If you take advantage of it.

I'm trying to understand this. I think the way this can work is if I upgrade a line on AT&T Next, I can pay for the second iPhone in full, then get the $650 in bill credits on that AT&T Next line's iPhone each month. If this can work, then I think I might get the deal to upgrade my dad's phone. My parents' phones/lines are all covered by me on my plan, and I just recently bought a Sim Free iPhone 6s Plus, and gave my dad my old iPhone 6 to replace his 5. If I get this deal, I can just get him the iPhone 6s, get another new iPhone 6s, then sell off my old iPhone 6, and give my mom the 'free' iPhone 6s, take her iPhone 6 and keep it for backup.

*EYES GLAZED OVER*
Do you write ToS agreements? I was trying to follow that...

;)

Wow. Sales on the iPhone? It must not be doing well. Guess it's off to a slow start. No one wants it. It's useless.

Blah blah, blah blah blah.
Agree, just what can you do with a 16gb iPhone, pay for a lot of storage in the cloud. Or use as a paper weight for all the paper work AT&T gives you to try to figure what they just did to you.

I tell you what, you keep the paid one and I'll take the free one - sounds fair to me :p

Apple Watch at Walmart
Apple pushing upgrades for their phones.

The times appear to be changing.

Tru dat. I wonder what's next, a 32GB iPhone 7 for $549 next year? I would've liked to say $449, but I think that would be pushing Apple too far.:D

Fine print says "Get up to $650 in 30 monthly bill credits of up to $21.67 starting within 3 bills for installment payments."

I think this also means you can not upgrade the line with the free iPhone for 33 months (2.75 years). So if you want to buy the new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7s, you probably have to buy it unlocked. You can't pay off the ATT Next early, because you might lose the monthly credit.

"If upgrade or pay up/off agreement early your credits may cease."

Lastly selling the free iPhone will be more difficult if the ATT Next plan isn't 100% paid off.

You have to buy a iphone on a new line. THEN another line is eligible

This is false. You have to buy an iPhone 6s (or Galaxy S6 series phone) on Next on an upgrade OR a new line, then the free phone will then be available with the purchase of a new line of service on Next 24.

You can upgrade the line with the free iPhone any time you'd like under the normal Next program guidelines, however once you do, and if you do early, the credits for the installments may (will) cease. Meaning if you upgrade at 24 months, then you'll trade in the free phone and upgrade to a new phone under normal circumstances. If you upgrade early (aka pay to upgrade to pay through the 24th month to upgrade), credits should/would cease and you'll upgrade like normal.

Also, selling the iphone wouldn't be more difficult to sell. Even as of now, the only roadblock to selling a phone that's not paid off on next is that it cannot be unlocked via the carrier until the installment is paid off. However if the buyer intends to use the product on at&t, there is no issue.

I second this notion. tsanga, don't do it if you think that'll work, because it won't.

Yes, You are correct.

Just remember that no one gives you something for FREE!
There is always some sort of catch and depending on your circumstances, there could be big ones.
If anyone thinks that someone with the likes of AT&T is really going to give you a FREE iPhone with no strings...I've got some land I wanna pitch to you.

This deal also works at Best Buy too, and best buy has a $200 gift card trade-in that stacks with this deal. You might want to update the article.
