Just called AT&T... they are stating this only applies to Samsung and not iPhones... has this worked for anyone? If so where and what did you say?
I just chatted with an AT&T rep via the online chat. She confirmed that if I get a 6S (or 6S Plus) I do get a second iPhone...but NOT the 6S/Plus, but a 6/Plus. And 16 GB. I was going to ask about getting the credit instead and using that on whatever phone I wanted...until she confirmed that this was on new lines only. So I stopped right there.

im planning to get my sister iphone 6s 64gb on a Next atnt plan, can someone explain to me how does this deal works?
From what I understand from AT&T, you've got to get a 6S/Plus as a new line, and they give you a 6/Plus for free. But it also has to be a new line. And you also still have to pay the taxes on the phone. And they do charge you the first three months of payments...and then REFUND you those payments after three months. So...MOSTLY free, with some hoops to jump through. And they both have to be new lines, so it doesn't work for upgrades.

OK, this is REALLY going to fuel speculation that the 6S is a dud. BOGO sales are what Samsung relied on to unload the Galaxy S5.
Hmm...someone on AI said this doesn't apply to iPhones. Sounds like confusion on at&t's part.

Does anyone know the specifics on this. Specifically, I assume that since there are two phones, this will require two lines being activated on a mobile share plan (I have one line on a grandfathered unlimited plan - so I'm not sure if this would even apply to me). Also, do you lose out on the free phone or rebates towards it (bill credits or whatever it is) if you pay off the purchased phone in a lump payment before the end of the two years?

If so, it seems like a way to lock people in for two years - albeit a decent one if you have a family plan, a need for two phones, plan on staying 24 months with AT&T, and have no need to unlock the phone for travel.

This could be the deal for me. I've been looking for a good deal to add my in laws to our cell plan. They need the upgrade as they both have 3gs phones. Obviously they aren't big upgraders so keeping the phone for 30 months isn't a deal breaker. It just says it "may" cease credits if you upgrade or payoff early. I'd be wiling to try anything if it meant I didn't have to look or hear the mother in law complain about her phone.

I don't think this deal is nearly as good as the Macrumors post seems to imply. My read of the linked T&C for the Galaxy S6 BOGO offer – and let's be real, the unadvertised iPhone offer can only be weakly less generous than the Samsung offer given how poorly the S6 has sold – is that the "free phone" needs to be activated on a new line of service. In other words, you can't just use this to upgrade two phones on your family plan for the price of one; you need to actually bring a brand new customer to AT&T. Am I missing something?

I think this says less of the popularity of the phone than the fact that people don't like being directly confronted with paying for their phones as opposed to having the payments lumped into the (higher) basic service costs...

My favorite lately is the "BOGO" offer from some clothing chain - I forget which - where the second item is half price, as if they didn't know what BOGO stood for.

It stands for "Buy One Get One". It has nothing to do with 1/2 price, xx% off, or free. Whatever the deal is it is usually stated after the BOGO.

I'm trying to understand this. I think the way this can work is if I upgrade a line on AT&T Next, I can pay for the second iPhone in full, then get the $650 in bill credits on that AT&T Next line's iPhone each month. If this can work, then I think I might get the deal to upgrade my dad's phone. My parents' phones/lines are all covered by me on my plan, and I just recently bought a Sim Free iPhone 6s Plus, and gave my dad my old iPhone 6 to replace his 5. If I get this deal, I can just get him the iPhone 6s, get another new iPhone 6s, then sell off my old iPhone 6, and give my mom the 'free' iPhone 6s, take her iPhone 6 and keep it for backup.

*EYES GLAZED OVER*

stand-up act right there

Since the deal is only good for new lines, would it be possible to cancel a current line in the process? My daughter has a line on her phone, but she is only allowed to contact my wife and I unless it is an emergency. It would be no problem to cancel her line and then reactivate it with the new line.

It shows how much $$ these companies are really making if they eat the cost of an iPhone. They wouldn't be giving phones away if it wasn't profitable.

While everyone else what chatting, I went out and took advantage of this. Amazingly the ATT Mall store was empty!

My wife and I have a family plan. Both of us had iPhone 5s phones that are "off plan" now. So we went in to get a 6s and a 6s plus both with 64G. You buy both phones, but then get $22 or so credit for 30 months (aka the "Free Phone"), so the second phone is essentially discounted $22*30.

The gotcha is, you need to add a "new" line. So I bit the bullet and took a new one (my wife is the only person who ever calls me!). Now we have 3 lines - but - I can cancel the older number (which I had for20 years - sigh) anytime and reduce the plan to two lines. So after the dust settles, will cancel the other line (hopefully tomorrow).

It gets even better - there is a promotion on an exchange - ATT is giving us $200 if we trade in one of the 5s phones within 14 days. That's close to $100 more than the standard trade in. Make sure you ask for the promotion price.

I actually called AT&T this morning about getting new phones and hadn't yet seen this article. They did tell me about the promotion. I was also changing our plan from an Family Talk Plan to the Mobile Shared Plan.

I wasn't adding phone numbers, but getting new devices for 2 existing lines. The first phone was a 64GB iPhone 6S which costs $25 per month on Next 24. I then didn't want a 16GB phone, but another 64GB iPhone 6S. The cost of the second phone was $3.33 a month ($25 less the $21.67 credit for a 16GB phone).

Is there an unlimited and unthorttled data plan to go with that? No? Well, I won't be going back to AT&T any time soon.
