Having worked for the company, I can say with 100% certainty that AT&T did not hire a high-schooler. They spent hundred of thousands of dollars to make it look trendy (shaky camera and all) and failing miserably at it.

No way... Maybe $5K per video, graphics included, anything more and they got soaked.

If I upgraded to a new 3G iPhone, can I put the SIM card back into the original iPhone to prepare it for resell (jailbreak and SIMunlock)? Or can you jailbreak/unlock the original phone without a SIM card?

How long does a credit check really take? Every time I've had a credit check done. ie. at Sears or some other place like that, it took maybe 1 minute.

Is it really worth an extra trip up there just to do this?

You're lucky... when I bought my first iPhone, the credit check literally took like 20 minutes. I have absolutely no idea why... I think the AT&T store I went to was using dialup and was having problems with their phone lines.

Ironic, eh?

We weren't iReady, so we threw together this poorly shot, poorly lit, video and stuck some dummy in a red shirt 'cause we know nothing about video... and 'cause we hired a high-schooler who couldn't afford a tripod and probably is trying to squeak by with a D- in a video editing class. Looks like this was shot and edited in under an hour... Great job AT&T... you guys are really portraying the quality I'm sure Apple would approve of....

You're being harsh. It's not great work... But it's good enough.

You've just been babied with Apple quality. To me, it shows ATT is trying to make an effort, but can't get their ***** together.

What if a customer is eligible for an upgrade but then gives the NEW iphone to someone? Will this lucky person be able to activate it?

I'm interested in this too.

My wife has an iPhone and I'd like to get the new iPhone 3G on my line. Any indications that this might be possible?

Anyone else notice that it says voice mail will be deleted when upgrading from the original iPhone to the iPhone 3G? WTF?

Credit Bureau?

Does anyone know which credit bureau AT&T uses? I called and asked them but the guy thought I was an idiot and just said all of them.

Without a doubt its worth it. On launch day, credit checks will run way slower then normal and that will not only delay you, but everyone behind you in line.

Not to mention, if you do have any issues with the check you might be able to resolve them before the 11th.

iPhone 3G Family Plan requires 2 iPhones however....

The iPhone 3g Family plan requires 2 iPhones, but their rules for iReady claim that I can only buy 1 at a time? Go figure.

"You may purchase 1 iPhone per person in line.
Two-year contract is required."

Yes, AT&T says on their website that you can give your current phone to a friend or family member.

It might be helpful to review AT&T's site.

Hopefully this video helps those out who can't seem understand the basic directions.

If someone gives me their old iPhone and I activate it, am I then eligible for the $199/299 pricing?

That video was kind of hilarious.

I expected him to say at the end, "So as you can see, giving us your money is easier than ever! To give us your money, just bring in your first born child, any secret diaries you have still have from childhood, birth certificates from everyone in your family, and of course, money!"

Good lord.....according to that video I would not only have to give my social security number but my dad's as he is the account holder of the family plan I am on now. I'm still not sure if I'm buying an iPhone, but I'm thinking if I do i might try refusing the SSN as other's have suggested.

Who cares how they made it? I couldn't watch more the 30 seconds of that crap... Annoying presenter, pathetic camera-work etc etc Where else could they go wrong where they haven't w/ these videos?

Good point. Even if normally a credit check does not take long, every one and their mom will be trying to get a credit check so that could back log things.

Anyhow, I'm getting in line at like 4 or 5 am.

The whole activation process seems unnecessarily complicated. Leave it to AT&T (a corporate, bureaucratic monster) to screw up something good.

It just works.*

* Some restrictions apply. See store for details.

I agree. I was happy to go to the Apple Store on iPhone Day + 2. The dude looked at me and said, "Here for an iPhone?" Yes I am. "Well here you go. Sign here, and go home". Done and done.

That appears to no longer be the case. "Here for an iPhone?" Yes I am. "Please go stand in that line, followed by another line, and soon there will be a teenager asking for your social security number and credit info"

So what is the activation process for existing iphone customers?

Go in to the store, they look up your account to see if you are an existing iphone user.

They give you the subsidized price.

You leave and activate it and sign up for the plan at home via itunes?
OR
Do you have to sign up for the plan etc in store?

I will be buying multiple iphones for my family members and do not want to sign up for the plans instore, I want to do that at home.....

nope

Apple stores opened many times 3 to 4 hours earlier for some events. I am 100% sure that AT&T and Apple will open at the same time. Its pretty smart actually. 8am is right before work, so people don't have to take a day off.

:apple:iAmReady

Yes, this will qualify you for the $199/$299 price. I had my iPhone on GoPhone, I was told by AT&T in order to qualify for the $199/$299 price I would need to bring it in and activate it under a 2 year contract. As long as you have an iPhone that's on an AT&T contract you automatically qualify for the $199/$299 price.

Man, I completely agree with the poor production comments. That video felt like some dumb journalism major did that. I see better quality on the 6:00 news.

Well, at least the people who are within the first 5 or so in line won't have to take the day off work. With everyone talking about credit checks and complaining about SSN's, if I'm not in the first group of people I'm sure I can kiss going to work goodbye. Going to take hours to get in the store.

Me, I've already got an AT&T phone so I don't have to worry about credit checks, I'll be quick. Of course, I'm not eligible for the upgrade either, so for being a long time AT&T customer I'm rewarded by having to pay an extra $200 + $18 upgrade charge . . . I was actually prepared for the higher cost (was prepared for it before we knew there was going to be a subsidy in the first place, I expected to pay the full price) but the upgrade charge is a crock. I'm halfway tempted to cancel, switch to another carrier, then come back for the iPhone as a new customer. Out of spite, of course, as that would certainly cost me much more than just sucking it up and paying the upgrade charge . . . :p

Props to AT&T for once. This was a good idea to help cut down on some of the confusion.
