I think Apple will make "one" device that will work on either network.....and isn't apple in control of price with all of their hardware. I will believe it when I see it. I have been on both networks and they both have their pros and cons

Once the exclusivity runs out I would really love to see which provider is the best for the iPhone and how they compare in certain situations.

Assuming you have a good signal in your area for both providers, I just don't see how switching to Verizon would be any "better". CDMA is slower....and does not allow me to surf and talk at the same time.

Verizon better offer some hefty discounts for me to switch.

No one is forcing you to read these Verizon-related posts. Anytime there's a new one you voluntarily jump in and pound your chest "There's not going to be a Verizon iphone". You don't seem to like these threads, so why don't you just ignore them.

+ 1. Jav feels the need to give his two cents in every single post on the subject. I wonder when he will understand that nobody actually cares.

I signed up for AT&T the day I got my iPhone 4…the day it came out. I have to say that so far, I think that AT&T’s customer service has been good (unlike Qwest which is beyond a nightmare), and some might call me a liar, but I’ve only had 2wo dropped calls since I got the iPhone…and it was to the same person within minutes of each other.

But I’m happy that it seems Verizon will get the iPhone. I’m happy for those (like my sister) who want it. And I’m happy that I expect AT&T’s bandwidth to improve if users jump ship.

If Verizon offers up the iPhone, I'm all over it like a fly on a hot turd. I live in San Diego and AT&T service sucks here. Anyone who says otherwise is being less than honest. I have to use a Microcell at home to get any service at all and I get no less than 20 dropped calls a day.

Apple Needs To Break Exclusivity

If Apple does not get onto other providers as quickly as possible (within six months IMO) they are going to get their lunch handed to them by Google. Currently they have access to only 25%ish of the market. The other 75% want a smartphone and many will buy them this holiday season and have chosen a platform.

You might say, oh well, Apple just wants to be the best, not the biggest, but there are a lot of advantages that come with being the biggest. I love the Mac, but one of the reasons I have to carry a PC (or run Boot Camp) is because not being the biggest has led to lots of software not coming out for the mac. They do not want developers making products for Droid and porting to the iPhone, they want that to be the primary development platform and the only way that happens is for you to be the biggest.

Lose that and eventually you may start losing the software that makes the phone so special. You also lose compatibility. I don't use keynote because I can't guarantee other people have it (most don't). Exporting to Power Point is a poor solution as Keynote doesn't export fonts for example. So Apple, please be the best, but also try to be the biggest.

The one and only thing that is going to keep me from going to Verizon is that there is a 99% chance there will be no unlimited plan from them. I'll keep mine on AT&T, thanks.

There are plenty of places, I'm sure, where AT&T service is fine/good...maybe even better than Verizon. Here in the Bay Area, like your experience in SD, Verizon happens to be way better. I have to keep a "dumb" Verizon phone in my car because AT&T drops so often. I also have a Microcell, but it messes up my router on a regular basis. (Why should I even need a Microcell?!)

Happily Hacked

I'm very happily hacked on my iPhone and avoiding AT&T with a smile. I don't know that I'll go Verizon either, if they do the 'tiered data plan' scam.

I also wonder what a Verizon switch will mean for enterprise. My company’s preferred vendor (almost to the total exclusion of everyone else) is Verizon.

It is possible to get an iPhone (instead of a Blackberry), but you need a STRONG business case, probably because of the higher cost of the device and having to use AT&T.

Still I don’t know what the point is of getting a work issued iPhone at my company, since they are locked down to the point that they really aren’t an iPhone anymore. Interestingly though, my company has been eager to explore the iPad.

Apple very much risks becoming irrelevant if they don't get onto alternative carriers, especially the largest carrier in the US, Verizon. Android activations in 2010 already exceed iphone activations.

Amazon, Vodafone, and Verizon have announced creating their own Android app stores. A mess for users and developers. Contrast with Apple's integrated App Store

I'm really hoping to see some competition between the two to possibly lower prices a bit in the plans.
I doubt you will see that anytime soon. I'll bet Verizon will actually raise their rates for iPhone contracts. If three and a half years of people bitching about AT&T and pent up demand will drive people to Verizon, of course they're going to maximize profit.

"You want betta coverage witda iPhone? We got it ova heah - for a price, capish?"

If I switch...

I hope this is true not because I plan to switch anytime soon, but with dissatisfied AT&T jumping ship to go to Verizon, it can only mean lighter traffic for the people staying with AT&T.

Should I switch to Verizon, it'll be because I have more friends and family on the Verizon network rather than me not liking AT&T services.

OK, someone didn't read this post!!!! AT&T announced yesterday that it had ridden the strength of the iPhone 4 to a net gain of 2.6 million subscribers during the third quarter, giving the company a total of 92.8 million subscribers. Verizon, meanwhile, added just under 1 million new subscribers to reach 93.4 million customers.

Less than a million difference!:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

They are preparing for the loss of the exclusive contract at the end of 2011. It makes sense to start a year early.

Wonder if AT&T will reinstate the unlimited data plan again in order to attract/retain more iPhone users?

And I love how the pic is staged. I've never been in an AT&T store and seen a smiling customer. Certainly never seen a smiling sales rep.
