do you guys think friday would be too soon for an organized youtube protest? im trying to set this thing in motion asap.

hah are you kidding me. protesting AT&T... unless you switch service providers - along with half of their network.. i doubt they'd care

That is ridiculous. Extremely disappointing that instead of updating their network to be more capable they block access to it...wow. We are paying $30 dollars a month for data, there are millions of iPhone owners, are you kidding me? I have had AT&T since September and not only is the 3G network pretty bad (Slow, bad reception, etc) but the choices that AT&T is making is really infuriating. As soon as the iPhone is compatible with Verizon I am switching over, along with tons of other people I know as well.

Also, if they don't have enough network capacity to support normal iPhone usage (including tethering and slingbox), then I'd like to have the option to cap my data usage and have access to all these services.

5GBs a month is plenty for watching tons of TV. It isn't like I'm going to spend more than a couple hours a month watching TV on the tiny iPhone screen. I just like to have the opportunity to tune in when I'm out and about to see what is happening.

More calls in more places my butt!

AT&T has crappy crappy service to start with... I can GUARANTEE that if I make a call driving home from work I will get at least one dropped call. Your a freaking phone company! Improving your network should be your top priority!!!!! Fix the dang thing!! Apple should be raining fire down on AT&T for not giving their customers UNLIMITED INTERNET and better connection!!!!!

I was soooo close to deciding that my next phone would be an IPhone, but AT&T (and Apple to an extent) made my decision so much easier. Instead, I will buy a new Windows Mobile phone and use WMWiFiRouter to share the phones connection with my iPod Touch.
It AMAZES me that AT&T can get away with device dependent discrimination. If you have a WnMo device, or a Palm, or Blackberry, etc. you may use apps like SlingPlayer. If you want to use the BEST mobile device then you are LIMITED artificially because off AT&T's monopoly empowered by Apple. If Microsoft did this, the EU, US Commerce dept & FTC along with a LOT of consumers would be burning Bill Gates in effigy.
To further demonstrate how silly, unfair, and ridiculous this, remember that they do not offer unlimited use. It is capped at 5GB/month. So there is already a limiting factor.
Wake up, Apple. Either open up the market or stop colluding with AT&T to deprive your customers!!!!!
You can do it yourself or let nature take it's course with a shrinking market share and/or lawsuits and major complaining/lawsuits, etc. from your customer base.

Really? You're going to skip out on the best smartphone out there because of this one app? Really? OK, your loss.

Jailbreak... Wah Wah... :D

Mr Fusion releases statement to AT&T regarding WiFi-only apps:

"F&$# YOU MA BELL! I pay $30/mo. for your craptacular 5GB data plan, and I plan on using every last bit of it. ;)"

If I don't crash their network using SlingPlayer, what motivation do they have to build a better one?

A possible workaround

Technically what Slingbox could do, would be to just have their SlingBox generate a web page that the customer could log into, and then push the video using standard internet protocols to Apple's QuickTime plugin.

It would be difficult for AT&T to prevent you from viewing a web page in Safari...

Doesn't this statement boldly disagree with AT&T's stance on how PCs/laptops are very different from phones, and their use on EDGE and 3G networks requires an additional tethering charge?

Good point---It looks like this means that since the iPhone is a computer--I should be able to tether with impunity---it is just another computer.

Glad I got NetShare in the hours it was available.

We have to know this SlingBox issue will REALLY piss Steve Jobs off, and it might help open up iPhone with other providers. Yea, I know the whole CDMA thing, and I have always been marginally happy with AT&T, but this issue is close to pushing me over the Edge(Pun intended).

Wishful thinking part: Maybe come June when AT&T rolls out the "new and improved" network, they will make it available on 3G.....yea, I am sipping the Kool-Aid a little......but I can hope.
It really does make me reconsider upgrading in June with a new iPhone and new 2 year agreement. I was 100% before this news...now, not so much!

Everyone loves to bash Sprint on here, but it seems to me that AT&T is the inferior carrier. I'm not buying the argument of increased bandwidth use. If this truly is the case, then AT&T shouldn't allow any of their cellphones to stream video content over 3G. This just stinks of AT&T taking advantage of their highest paying customers, all due to the monopoly they have via their exclusive contract. Apple must be making some serious dough off AT&T if they can sit back in silence and watch this happen.

Hmm. The Pre is looking even better now. I've had Sprint before. Their network is 10x better and they don't shove restrictions down your throat.

You know..... i wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing it blocked at the packet level on other phones now. AND other carriers.

AT&T took a stand against it - they are going to HAVE to go all the way with it..... and Verizon & SPrint will tag along on their coattails.

This will be interesting to watch play out! (i'm a verizon smartphone customer, currently with no data on her phone for financial reasons)

Honestly, I can't really blame AT&T for treading lightly on this.

Mobile Safari accounts for approximately 65% usage for all cell phones, with Android the closest at about 8.5%. With iPhones accounting for so few of all cell phones out there, these types of stats really show how much the iPhones users actually use the internet.

If AT&T opened this up for SlingPlayer, it most likely would bog things down. And if it didn't, how could AT&T justify letting SlingPlayer have their 3G and then perhaps not let other similar apps share the network.

Err on the side of caution.

everyone with me now, TIME TO PICKUP YOUR PITCHFORK AND THE MOLOTOV COCKTAIL, WE'RE HEADING TO AT&T HEADQUARTER FOR MASSIVE PROTEST!

WOW THIS SUCKS...

The iphone have the potential to be GOD but is crippled by its creators. SHAME

Well, just like i thought... AT&T decision will affect other countries whose carriers don't mind, because they milk their subs for the overage fees. AT&T needs to ditch the unlimited model and just start charging for usage.

I have a 6GB data plan and I was so hoping to utilize it more with Slingplayer.

http://www.sling.com

A cross between Hulu and a SlingPlayer client. On Windows, it will call up your SlingPlayer client and you can watch your own TV, Tivo, whatever.

They should take this and make it Safari/iPhone friendly.

"Wake up, Apple. Either open up the market or stop colluding with AT&T to deprive your customers!!!!!"

You know, I don't know if Apple really had any say in the matter at all. I mean, what would they care if the Sling Player worked on Wifi or Edge or 3g or just one of them? They are still getting their cut of the sales. I think that AT&T had the real say on this one. And I do think that they were worried that their network couldn't handle the congestion, b/c there are so many Iphones being used on their network.

What I would really love to know is, did Apple/AT&T really test the Sling Player over their network and try to simulate the potential congestion that it would casue, or did they just reject it out of fear that it would do so? Did they just say to Sling a month ago that it was a no go and we have just been waiting for Sling to reconfigure the APP without Edge/3G? This is what I believe happened.

What is really a shame is that we love the IPhone but are stuck with a crappy carrier with inconsistent policies. If the Iphone would come to another network the new competition might create a better user experience. I would think that if you are going to block 3g usage, why not do the same with ever other version of the software? Think of how pissed Sling is right now considering how much time that they put into development.

Worst. Statement. Ever.

I wasn't even very likely to pay $30 bucks for the Slingbox app, but after reading this god I wish I could tell AT&T just how much I want them to go bankrupt and disappear off the face of the Earth!

$30 a month doesn't buy much, when upgrading the network costs literally billions. The current lack of front end capacity and backhaul is just the way it is.

Perhaps ATT could hold lotteries, and portion out the player relative to the bandwidth available in each area.

It might even turn out that not that many people were actually going to buy a box and the mobile player.

"Data Plan for iPhone 3G includes unlimited* data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose."

*Unlimited data = unlimited restrictions on data usage with limited bandwidth

It might even turn out that not that many people were actually going to buy a box and the mobile player.

I agree, and that speaks volumes about AT&T fear of being exposed. Probably a small percentage of iPhone users would buy the app and the box, but that fraction of people is enough to scare the daylights out of AT&T that it's flimsy network would buckle under it's perceived load.
