What a bunch of hooey..

Why Laptop Connect then?

I don't understand why ATT allows SlingPlayer to work on my MacBook using my Laptop connect card on the same 3G network my iPhone uses.

It contradicts their statement completely.

And one other thing- does AT&T have the balls to issue that press release and turn around after the next version of the Iphone and release a streaming app for its Uverse? And also bump up the data plan to $40/month?

"Data Plan for iPhone 3G includes unlimited* data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose."

*Unlimited data = unlimited restrictions on data usage with limited bandwidth

There is so much double standard floating around ATT in regards to the iPhone I nearly forgot about the glaring one you just pointed out.

Oh and by the way Apple, ATT just said your iPhone isn't a phone. Wasn't that the PR marketing push Apple tried to work on selling the iPhone as at release? was to convince the consumer that this is simply a phone that works! well ATT just crapped all over that.

And since we're now being told by ATT that the iPhone doesn't qualify as a phone by their standards (which they just made up) , I think I feel perfectly fine ending my ATT contract. I prefer a carrier that sells phones and doesn't redefine what a phone is at my expense.

Sorry, but just ONE more thing. Doesn't the video podcasts (like NBC nightly news) stream from the iTunes app with some serious bandwidth?
I know they aren't as popular but what if they were to one day catch fire, what would AT&T do then?

Dear ATT,
Due to the potential of ATT's overwhelming burden on my finacial well being, I will only be sending you some of the monthly amount you request.
Sincerely
Just one of your non-valued Customers

Sling is wasting a perfect opportunity.

We all know AT&T has it's network and PR issues, but I have a problem with Sling on this one. Sling should make an announcement lowering the price of the app considering the restriction of the 3g network that breaks the concept of the Sling Player completely. Then Sling needs to redirect the angry mob towards AT&T and Apple to get some type of leverage. Public outrage works especially when it is focused on one thing. $30 is too much for an app that is broken.

Game over for the iPhone and At&T.

Bottom line is Apple chose the wrong Network.

GD Right they did!!!

Time to switch!!! Keep Hiring EVDO Programmers Apple!!!!!!!!!!!

Drop AT&T & move to a company that doesn't frack their customers without the courtesy of a reach around.

I'm beyond ridiculing AT&T's ****** 3G network, so I won't even go there... The real issue that pisses me off is the fact that:

It's one thing for the carriers to advertise "unlimited data" when in reality it is limited to 5GB.

It's a whole other leap into idiocy for them to actually place restrictions on what you can do with that 5GB of data!

And then to use their partnership with Apple and Apple's monopoly on App sales to force Sling to modify their application? It is just lunacy!

slingmobile player

this is smart by ATT people could go to the free hotspots and it would raise profit from the restruants and no one would get in a car wreck because it is not on the 3g network people wouldnt be tempted to watch TV in the car and be distracted and vote for Adam Lambert for american idol he sang

Mock commercial

I'd say that within 72 hours there will be a mock AT&T commercial on YouTube that highlights an iPhone user trying to use the SlingPlayer over the AT&T 3G network <fails> while another user running Verizon is happily watching Comedy Central's Daily Show.

The tag line will be, "AT&T, the nation's fastest 3G network...unless you actually try to use it."

I'm so sick of this type of crap and the only reason they get away with it is because AT&T has a monopoly on the iPhone in the US!

I never agreed with the carrier-exclusive situation in the first place, but this takes it to another level. They are using their monopoly on the iPhone to place restrictions on the service that they wouldn't be able to get away with if it were available on the other carriers.

I'm starting to strongly feel that the carrier-exclusivity paradigm needs to be broken up by the FTC as anti-competitive.

SSSSSHHH! West Coast hasn't watched it yet!

AT & T, You Suck!

AT & T's statement is full of so much horse manure that I don't know where to start. Well let's begin with the fact that if I have a laptop with an AT & T wireless card I can Sling my TV signal, or if I own a Blackberry or Windows Mobile device. iPhone owners are being treated like a red headed step child, the sooner that Apples exclusive deal with AT & T ends the better it will be for all of us.

Enough!

OK, so AT&T wants to screw around? Here's a modest proposal:

What are we allowed? 4GB a month? I suggest we all use every last bit of bandwidth we can, right up to the limit. And all of us post it and ask every iPhone owner we know to do the same.

Hey, imagine what you can do with our fast 3G wireless network! Unless, um, you actually need to use any bandwidth. Then, not so much.

Seriously?

Amen. Sweet, Simple, and 100% true!

Are you kidding me? Apple chose the wrong network? Which network was the right one then? Verizon? WRONG! A CDMA iPhone is an US only iPhone. Sprint? Same deal as Verizon... T-Mobile? They are just joining the 3G party... Think about the options. This sling player move pisses me off to no end as well, despite the fact that I don't even have a slingbox.

I agree, the reason they treat iPhone owners in this manner is because we allow it.

Did you hear AT&T is having a benefit to raise money so they can upgrade their network?

They have an unlimited number of high priced tickets, but limited seating.

It's an all-you-can-eat buffet, but you are limited to just 5 plates.

Also, plates aren't actually plates, but rather small saucers because they don't want to possibly run out of food before the bins can be restocked

AT&T is contradicting itself.
We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs.
Okay, then why the restriction then? I don't see non-wireless ISPs restricting "slinging" (although that might change with the way things are going).

My rough translation of AT&T's comment:
"We don't want to improve or invest in the improvements of our network to allow our customers to use the technologies possible on their devices. We're more interested in squeezing out more money from our customers because we're the exclusive provider for the iPhone. So screw you customers, nothing you can do anyway. (Evil laugh)."

More reason for Apple to consider selling the iPhone unlocked since AT&T's involvement in the approval of applications for the app store is inhibiting developers.

so i'm wondering now... would everyone using a ton of bandwidth make any difference? piss off att? screw up the network for everyone else?

i mean... i could plug in my iphone, turn off wifi, and play one of the many, many video apps that ARE allowed all night, every night.

and say EVERYONE does this, every night.

do we accomplish anything? or does everyone just drop more calls all the time?

would we be charged overages? certainly, ATT could figure out a way to charge overages on an unlimited account. because... you know. :(

Verizon makes world phones do they not? That run on a GSM network. So really I bet they could have made it work, just decided not to. Here's the catch. It just all Apple marketing. At&t first, makes people switch, high rates, lots of money, and defend it simply by saying well we wanted a world release and GSM is the network.

Now LTE is coming out, all they have to do is open the iphone to verizon once the US is on one network (and the world) GSM. So they can make even more money.

Verizon is the superior network, but they will get the most money out of At&t first, then open to everyone and sell even more.
OMFG

this is an
EPIC FAIL

That's exactly what I was going to say.

Can someone explain the Slingbox concept to me, as if I were a 4 year-old?

I looked it up on Wiki, and it seems to me that if you have a TV tuner and buy the Orb Live app ($9.99), this Slingbox wotsit is superfluous. I just don't see the upgrade necessity, especially given lack of 3G.

Incidentally, I have an iPhone but also a Touch.

Given the colossal outrage in the (ridiculous) comments section of Engadget, with all the iPhone owners not even taking into account iTouch owners, many people like me are not affected by this decision.
