Oh, it's on now Mo Fo's.........ATT I hope you know you have now created millions of iPhone users who will do everything in their power to make sure you fail...............guess it's time to look into jailbreaking. You may think you can get away with screwing the users in other ways, but now it's going too far and I think there will be a significant backlash over this......just wait and see........I bet it ends up working over 3G..........despite their BS press release.

I've got a press release for you............up yours...............Sling will be the one who suffers most as now they will have a hard time justifying the cost of the app....plus all the stuff they have been releasing about it working over 3G.....I can't even imagine how mad they must be.

I say there should be an iPhone App that shows a countdown to the end of AT&T's exclusivity period with the Apple iPhone.

"Waiting for Apple to free themselves of AT&T? There's an app for that..."

I waited for this even BEFORE the iPhone launch day. I'm stunned.
I can't help but think Apple is pissed too.

It would've been so amazing. So amazing. Send your cards/letters to AT&T folks. LET'S FLIP THIS.

It isn't about JUST this one app

Really? You're going to skip out on the best smartphone out there because of this one app? Really? OK, your loss.

1. It is about the fact that that I only want ONE phone bill. Having a WinMo phone on Sprint along with an iPod Touch and WMWiFiRouter gets me most of what I want without unilateral decisions by AT&T telling WHAT I can do with my "unlimited" 5GB data plan. And if I get the new HTC Touch Pro 2, I even get a better screen than the iPhone.
2. It is because of the fact that AT&T has virtually ignored 3G in my area while putting it in areas with MUCH smaller populations while Sprint, Verizon, and even AllTel have had 3G and even 3.5G here for A LONG time, even in the suburbs where I live.
3. It is also because I want to be the person who decides what apps I run on my phone. I don't want to be limited to what one company decides is appropriate for me (Apple). Especially considering some of the recent controversial decisions and reversals on app inclusion. I could "jailbeak" it, but that carries other risks.

AT&T has a dependable and reliable 3G network? YGTBK

Like it has already been said numerous times. AT&T's 3G network is pathetic absolutely horrible.

If this news surprise's anyone than your living in a cave.

Verizon's network, and them going 4G next year, come on baby, YO Steve Jobs, better start planning on pulling the plug for AT&T or splitting it and once Verizon feels the $$$$$$ AT&T will be down:eek: or rushing to play catchup , Oh wait a minute there already doing that now.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL:rolleyes:

Come on hackers! (virtually hears sounds of keyboard clicks everywhere)

It's there already.
People are using Skype on cellular network.
You just need to jailbreak and install VoIPover3G; that's all.
I think they should change the name to WhateverOverAT&T.

Can someone explain the Slingbox concept to me, as if I were a 4 year-old?

I looked it up on Wiki, and it seems to me that if you have a TV tuner and buy the Orb Live app ($9.99), this Slingbox wotsit is superfluous. I just don't see the upgrade necessity, especially given lack of 3G.

Incidentally, I have an iPhone but also a Touch.

Given the colossal outrage in the (ridiculous) comments section of Engadget, with all the iPhone owners not even taking into account iTouch owners, many people like me are not affected by this decision.

I don't own one, but I think it's basically a box that relays your TV signal over the Internet so you can view your programming elsewhere.

The problem I see is this could take WAY more bandwidth than a bunch of people watching a panda farting on YouTube. I hardly ever use my YouTube app because I could really care less about pandas farting. YouTube is 99 percent rubbish and 1 percent quality content.

Yes, AT&T's terms are quite weird. It's called "unlimited" data when it's got a 5GB cap in the fine print. However, every ISP does that, although wired services do it to a lesser extent. The problem is "unlimited" works well on marketing lemmings.

As for everyone calling for opening up the network, I agree -- but not for the "I HATE AT&T!" fringe on here. There's this myth that Verizon is somehow some utopian company that is just awesome, it isn't. I have a friend on Verizon who runs out of minutes from time to time. Why? She doesn't have rollover minutes. Meanwhile, I've got 4,800 RO minutes on my AT&T plan. I'll also guarantee you that any cell provider would've been slammed just like AT&T with that sudden deluge of new traffic. The iPhone made using the Web much easier than anyone outside Cupertino probably imagined, so AT&T has been playing catch-up for a couple of years. Verizon would've had the same problem. But if you open up the service to everybody, it would likely lead to some leaving AT&T for Verizon. Bad news for AT&T when it comes to subscribers, but good news that the network gets some relief and AT&T can have better service for more of us.

Some of you are really acting like children over this. REALLY acting like children.

Again, Seriously??

Verizon makes world phones do they not? That run on a GSM network. So really I bet they could have made it work, just decided not to.

Dude, do you have any clue what you are talking about? A Verizon world phone is a CDMA phone with a GSM transceiver stuck in it. That means it will work abroad if you insert a GSM SIM, but its not 3G... I figured someone would start spouting off about LTE. Here is my response: LTE is not here yet, and it certainly hasn't been here for the past 2 years that the iPhone has been for sale. How the **** are you going to make a broad statement about a technology that hasn't even been deployed yet?

5GB per month is over 22 hours of TV

I agree, and that speaks volumes about AT&T fear of being exposed. Probably a small percentage of iPhone users would buy the app and the box, but that fraction of people is enough to scare the daylights out of AT&T that it's flimsy network would buckle under it's perceived load.
I don't think it is the total bandwidth they are worried about. The incremental increase would probably be almost unmeasurable. The problem would be in locations like New York City where you could have several or more users in a public location all using SlingPlayer off of the same tower.

But let's do a little math on what a typical user might do over that 5GB/month limitation. One of the reviews I read said that SlingPlayer for the iPhone limited bandwidth to 500kb/s over WiFi. So, taking that as a maximum (which is probably beyond what would be typical over either WiFi or 3G) you'd have:

(5GB * 8)/500kb/s = 80,000 seconds or 22 hours per month of TV.

I'd think that you'd have to be an awfully heavy user to reach that value. That's one hour per week-day. I suspect I would only use it a few hours per month, if even that.

Call the Press

Someone needs to get the press involved to bring the heat on AT&T. This is definitley a wrong, and it needs to be brought to light.... Not it!!!

Apple didn't know just like Obama didn't know

"Wake up, Apple. Either open up the market or stop colluding with AT&T to deprive your customers!!!!!"

You know, I don't know if Apple really had any say in the matter at all. I mean, what would they care if the Sling Player worked on Wifi or Edge or 3g or just one of them? They are still getting their cut of the sales. I think that AT&T had the real say on this one. And I do think that they were worried that their network couldn't handle the congestion, b/c there are so many Iphones being used on their network.

What I would really love to know is, did Apple/AT&T really test the Sling Player over their network and try to simulate the potential congestion that it would casue, or did they just reject it out of fear that it would do so? Did they just say to Sling a month ago that it was a no go and we have just been waiting for Sling to reconfigure the APP without Edge/3G? This is what I believe happened.

What is really a shame is that we love the IPhone but are stuck with a crappy carrier with inconsistent policies. If the Iphone would come to another network the new competition might create a better user experience. I would think that if you are going to block 3g usage, why not do the same with ever other version of the software? Think of how pissed Sling is right now considering how much time that they put into development.

Sure. Apple has nothing to do with it. And President Obama didn't know they were going to fly Air Force One low over New York... Yeah, sure.... Whatever.

I don't know for a fact that Apple had any say, but from what I have read of their influence and their "ground breaking" contract with AT&T, plus the fact that AT&T has recently been trying to extend their exclusivity contract for the iPhone, I HAVE to believe that Apple has the power to say no to this. They need to man up and DO THAT!

It isn't just about this one app, it is about basic unfairness. Let me count the ways:
1. AT&T already caps the bandwidth at 5GB/Month anyway, so WTH is up?
2. If you own another phone on AT&Ts network you get to use SlingPlayer.
3. YouTube, iTunes, HULU, etc. are all fine, but if a little guy like me without much clout wants to occasionally watch a little TV from my house, I can't because it will somehow clog up their frikkin network. If I were big and powerful like the networks, etc. I might could do something about it.
4. If you use one of AT&Ts data plans with a USB device on your laptop you can use SlingBox. Is that a computer? Yes. Hmmm. Their excuses are getting more and more lame.
5. This information was released over a month ago and AT&T quickly denied it and retracted it. Now it s back. So, they are admitting that they LIED before.

Unless and until these issues are laid to rest, I hope AT&T offices, stores, and telephone lines are besieged by customers ready to cancel their service. Vote with your wallet, people. They will change their ways under pressure. I want the iPhone to succeed because it is a well-thought out device that I like using (iPod Touch actually, but you know what I mean) Fix the iPhones network and I will buy one.

FYI LTE/4G is being tested by Verizon now, its supposed to hit late next summer.

As for the Sim card, in the world phone, Verizon gives you that before going overseas to GSM countries and they notate your acct for calls and billing purposes.

Thing is though, if Apple would turn around and say your NOT exclusive to AT&T, AT&T could **** on the consumer with the iPhone. Wait till late June or end of summer when they release a new iPhone. AT&T's network is struggling now. We went for 4 days without 3G because they could not fix the problem because they were not sure where it was and or what was causing it.

The spotlight and heat is already on AT & T and will continue to grow, think about it they have already released a statement and the app is not even available yet.

Doesn't really matter I think they made the right decision. I could care less.

Broad statement like 2010 apple At&t contract ending and Verizon implementing an LTE network. When LTE is more of a standard and verizon and att both have it Apple can free that iPhone. Both At&t and Verizon will be there sooner or later and I see Apple opening up and selling to all and make way more than they are now. That's how I make a statement about technology that is existing in less than a year.

As far as the past 2 years go, yeah At&t was the best choice. I said that. They get a world release and thats exactly what they wanted. So far At&t's network has been a pretty big flop. I didn't get an iPhone because of all the issues with their 3G network. Verizon's service is better and I hope sooner or later we will have the opportunity to use it on whatever service we want.

On top of that if the iPhone is on both At&t and Verizon at the same price, both carriers will have to really care about their network and pricing.

This is still funny. I was wondering how upset people would be by this. Wonder if they can get the attention of At&t.

I would really like what AT&T's estimates are as to how many people have a Slingbox, have an iPhone and would be willing to pay $30 for the application. Once you have x number of people not all would be slinging at the same time and all are spread out over the 'network.' Then again, I cannot get 3G to work when I am in a stadium with 50k people and I'm forced to switch to EDGE to make a call or text.

I'm sorry, I am never one to criticize, but I told you guys/gals AT&T is beyond greedy. It keeps getting worse and worse. They have milked the iphone in every way possible. The great device known as the iphone is veeery slowly cheapening in my eyes and I NEVER thought I would say that. It's all thanks to AT&T. I was definitely one of those waiting in a three hour line on the very first day the V1 phone was released. The quality of the phone remains but the cost to use everything ruins the experience. I dealt with it for a long time cause the phone was great but not anymore. I'm seriously waiting for someone else to pick it up before I go back to it. Sigh . . I miss using my iphone. However, I must conduct business. What's that? Green . .? Lime green blackberry, hold on, I can what . . ? Conduct email through and follow packages by way of and . . sorry Apple. I'm always with you but I have to have reliability and not greediness. When you move on, I will move back. I'm honestly upset but quality is quality. :(

AT&T's concern over their bandwidth seems to be a legitimate one. Video demands a great amount of bandwidth - but if it's video for the resolution of the iPhone, I would guess that this is significantly less bandwidth than I would demand for my 15" MBP. Again though, i think it's a concern that was address appropriately. If there's any chance that my bandwidth for my youtube video (approprately sized for the iPhone) and any other videos is diminished because of great sling player usage, I think maybe Wi-Fi only is a good idea.

I would have thought Edge users were out of the question to begin with.

What about all the other At&t phones that have the slingbox app!?!?!?!?!?!?

30 bucks isnt cheap, and i expect my apps not to be controlled because of network issues.
