Awesome! Crossing fingers that my original iPhone will last until whenever the new ones are released. Today, I had a minor scare, as it locked up for a while and initially refused to be rebooted...eventually it did, so all is well for now. It's my only phone, so if it goes in the next few weeks, I'm SOL.

but when it is launched at the WWDC will it take a while to come to Australia, do you reckon it will be only in the US for some time before they ship them everywhere?
Most likely.

I don't think Apple's manufacturing partners have enough production capacity to build enough units for a proper worldwide launch on the same day. There are probably supply constraints both in the display parts as well as some silicon.

According to the teardown of one of the leaked alleged prototype units, the next-gen iPhone uses a SoC (System-on-a-Chip). Some of those components within the package are probably scarce (either the memory or the CPU itself). Same with the higher-resolution display (if that rumor is true). The newer display technology probably has lower yields from the supplier's manufacturing line since you're quadrupling the number of transistors.

From a logistical standpoint, it would probably be far more difficult to have a huge number of phones being activated worldwide on the same day. Apple has already struggled mightily with U.S.-only iPhone launches.

A staged rollout seems to be far easiest for Apple, its manufacturing partners, and the customers. I don't see this changing in the near future based on Apple's resources.

I'm sure that's not the answer you wanted to read, but that's what seems to be the logical conclusion to me.

What's the big deal, it's just a cell phone

And it is sort of sad to think that AT&T employees can't take vacations during the summer months because of Apple.

Just a phone my ass. And they can take vacations during summer months.. just not June. That's A summer month.

And it is sort of sad to think that AT&T employees can't take vacations during the summer months because of Apple.
It wouldn't be all AT&T employees, just ones that are affected by the release of a new popular handset: cellular network engineers, AT&T Mobility customer service staff, and of course, AT&T retail employees.

Hey, in almost any industry your employer might require your presence because business demands it. In every employee handbook, there's a disclaimer that vacation time is subject to the needs of the business.

In an upscale restaurant, you better believe that most Friday and Saturday nights, you're working. Same with retail: you're probably not getting too many vacation days in December. If you're a CPA, you're probably really busy in April. If you're a golf pro at the local country club, your summers are probably busy.

If you don't like your employer's terms, find another career. With 12% unemployment, there are plenty of people willing to take your position.

Especially in a public-facing role (retail, hospitality, customer service, etc.), you work when you have customers. Remember that those hordes of crazed iPhone fanatics are the ones putting paychecks in the pockets of AT&T retail staffers.

Besides, it's just 2-3 weeks. Not a big deal.

nope

I'm a manager for AT&T and I can verify that there's been no blackout period for vacations in June, and we have NOT been told ANYTHING about a new iPhone.

Pure speculation.

Are you a retail manager? AT&T employs 276,000 people and not all would be affect by the release of some popular handset.

Not that I can't imagine that this rumor is a total crock. That said, this is the timeframe where Apple has previous shipped iPhones. Retail employees are typically the last to find out about such matters.

I've commented elsewhere that this rumor says nothing about which employees were notified. It could be network engineers, purchasing agents, or inventory control specialists.

Basically, someone from Apple Channel Sales could have said, "Hey, we're sending you 250,000 iPhones in a couple of weeks. Make room in your warehouses. There are X units per pallet, each pallet weighs Y pounds. Oh, yeah, please transfer $120 million to our bank. Call us when you need more. We expect to hear back from you in a few weeks."

Sure, why not? They can't log revenue until they get your money, but if it makes it easier for you to commit, they'll do it.

Frankly, since they already have in the past, it should be a no-brainer.

yeah i think so too, i hope, because i plan to sell my 3gs this week and just want to guarantee i get it on release date

Okay so I just got a new iphone 3GS replacement for my old one last week. Got an offer to sell it for 400. should I go ahead and do it and rough it out without an iphone for a few weeks? I know the price for 3GS will go down as soon as iphone 4 is announced. I am eligible to upgrade now.

The price has already dropped. Wal-Mart has the 16GB 3Gs for $97.00.

couldnt have worded this more better!!! completely agree!!

So I'm still new to AT&T about 9 months or so now cheap plans..Bought it at apple online and picked it up at my local apple store..

So can line up on the day when it comes out but I will have to pay the full price ex..400$ + depends on size on the GB..this correct?

Never lined up before and I want to experince it..just don't want to line up and can't buy the new iPhone yet..

Upgrade Magic!!

You will certainly be eligible to upgrade. But go to your account online and you can click on the link to check you upgrade eligibility and it will tell you where you fall.

I bought my 3G on April 2nd last year and when I just checked my ATT Acct., I'm eligible for a $199 16 GB 3GS or $299 for the 32 GB! I'm stoked. I can't decide whether to stand in line outside the Apple Store or the AT&T store!:p

"Ladies and Gentleman we've been working on iPhone for a long time and we really think you're going to like it. Please let me introduce to you iPhone."

Scenario #1
- Enter same damn recycled iPhone that has been around for the past few years with a new case and new features that should have been included years ago, but nothing new or ground breaking (but will be deemed cutting edge, magical, or some other spun BS.)

Scenario #2
- Apple pulls an Apple+Intel type announcement and completely blindsides us with the new iPhone. All those leaks were fakes and the new iPhone will be as revolutionary as it was when it was first introduced.

I for one am hoping for #2. Apple has been #1 for the past few years on everything it does and I miss the real innovations.

Lol, I hear ya. The second scenario sounds great! I would be down in SoHo faster than you could say SoHo. Alas I'm tired of getting amped up to be let down . . :D

I'm ready for the next gen. I bet it will be a screamer. Judging by the consistent leaks and info I'm pretty sure what we've been looking at is the next gen iPhone. After the info made it's way all over the net and TV, Apple knows they can't release a spec bump iPhone in the same case. They have to release the phone that everyone is expecting.

My Release Date Prediction

I'm predicting 6/18. Here's why:

Here are the announcement dates and corresponding release dates for the U.S. iPhone over the last 3 years:

Version - Announced - Released
Original - 1/9/2007 (Monday) - 6/29/2007 (Friday)
3G - 6/9/2008 (Monday) - 6/18/2008 (Wednesday)
3GS - 6/8/2009 (Monday) - 6/19/2009 (Friday)
4G - 6/7/2010 (Monday)? - 6/18/2010 (Friday)?

It looks like Apple releases the phone 9-11 days after announcing it (with the exception of the original). They always announce on Monday and, with one exception, release on Friday. Releasing on the 18th will give everyone the weekend to get the phone (more free time to wait in line).

Anyway, just my 2 cents...

I bought mine on the 14th and I won't be eligible for those prices until April 2011!

Oh no! You work for AT&T? I'm so sorry about that . . lol. :D

Good news here :D Just want to know though, how long do you think it will be before it is out in Europe? Should I wait or get a 3GS?

I'm hoping for number 2. I mean if they want to complete with android, they need something to beat them

Discounts for the 3GS

I know walmart is offering a discount on the 16BG version of the 3GS. I'm hoping to get a 32GB version at a discount - the new phone may be over my head. I don't mind the last model but $299 - is a bit out of my price range. Will they offer a discount once the new ones are announced?? Any thoughts?

When will we be getting preordering messages from Apple?

Sure, why not? They can't log revenue until they get your money, but if it makes it easier for you to commit, they'll do it.

Frankly, since they already have in the past, it should be a no-brainer.

Apple notified me on my iPhone about preordering the iPad prior to its sale. Based on the fact Apple has also sent out preordering messages in the past for the iPhone, shouldn't we be getting a preordering message for the next gen iPhone within the next few days? Any thoughts? Thanks.

iPhone in June

The rumors must be true! I am anticipating the arrival of the iPhone. But I truly wonder if the iPad will live up to the expectations of many people such as myself.
