So if I do try to cancel and move to another carrier when the rate increase happens, they'll say I owe $x on my subsidized phone?

No Subsidized phones means that they already ate the cost of your phone/device except for whatever price you paid them at the time of purchase. Either way it's already paid for.

You would ONLY owe if you did a monthly installment plan
( which odds are you didn't )

Shhhhweet!

I'd like to say I feel bad about it, but it's been an acrimonious relationship.

I'll consider my deeply discounted phone as a parting gift — the price of getting me off this unlimited plan.

I'm stuck I tried to cancel and port my number to Verizon but my phone is not unlocked and they won't unlock it until the final bill which is about 3 weeks, is there any way to unlock it now so I can port and use on in a new service ? They said I'm still in contract

1: Why on Earth would you want to switch to the crapfest that is Verizon?

2: if you don't mind voiding or essentially making any Waranty, AppleCare, or Insurance remaining on it useless and don't mind coughing up some cash you could use an unlocking or "Jailbreaking" service.

Otherwise you'll have to wait out the 3 weeks and deal or buy another phone your choice.

Maybe your right and I should just stick to att and unlimited. I don't know why I got the urge , service for both is pretty much the same

Anyone else staying ? Or are your moving to another service ?

There's a few people in the comments that have said they're staying.

I'm staying for several reasons.
Brand Loyalty
Locked in via ATT Next
Plenti Points ( google it if you need to )
Service/Coverage work best for me

Certain features I'm able to get
Or am grandfathered into

And although not the best Rollover Data and now all these Double Data and Bonus Data things they've been tossing people's way don't hurt either. They're still a top carrier for reasons

Ok cool, I was so close to porting to Verizon , they have 14gig for 80 dollars plus the 20 act access plus tax would run me about 118 I think. If I stay I get unlimited for 81 total with tax and fan discount. Plus att is s top carrier like you said and now you can't really tell much of a difference ...

It's only $5 so I'm staying. I'm happy with the service and it's still a good deal. I'm more upset about them eliminating the two year contracts. That will cost me $450.00 every 2 years.

Agree, now T-mobile is getting less expensive. I'll get 150x4 unlimited lines and I don't care on Att anylonger.

FYI, I wrote this in the other thread - and this is my experience (only). ATT is being a bit tricky with their cancellation policy based on the unlimited price increase. Just know that if you want to switch to another plan, you might have to start jury rigging to get the best deal (IE buying their cheapest new phone) to take advantage of their better sharing deals. Apparently you can't both cancel/get out of your contract AND switch "easily" their system is almost and either/or. At least that's what I've found. So right now - I'm seriously thinking of switching to TMobile and then perhaps back to ATT after whatever waiting period they have to avoid the extra phone purchase/hinky stuff.

ATT is being a douche. People should just start leaving ATT to voice their opinion.

Now that we're a week into February, has anyone seen the extra $5 charge on your bill yet? My billing cycle ends tomorrow, so I'll report back if I notice an increase. The bill usually isn't available to view for a few days, but the dollar amount due is usually shown pretty quickly. My total due is always $184.xx, so if I see $188-190, I'll know it was increased.

I only use about 2GB per month and have only kept my unlimited data because $30 - $6 FAN discount is cheaper than the 3GB plan at $30 - $0 FAN discount. Since my ETF is $275, I'm thinking of porting out to get the ETF waived. I wouldn't bother if AT&T was still offering subsidized phones, but there's no point for me to keep my grandfathered plan anymore.

I have a 4 line family plan, and my line will soon be $10 secondary line + $35 unlimited data + $5 200 messaging = $50. After taxes and FAN discount, I'll probably be at $50. For $50, I could almost get on the GoPhone plan that includes roaming in Canada, which would actually be very useful for me, since I leave near the border.

If you go log-in to your myAT&T account, view Plan and Cost Summary, you should be able to see the price increase for the grandfathered unlimited data plans. It's showing on my end, and I might consider my options this week since T-mobile is offering the unlimited data plan promo again.

You're right. I just logged in and was able to see in the Cost Summary that unlimited data is now $35. I guess the only question remaining is how difficult will it be to get the ETF waived. I have a feeling that it won't be automatic and will require a lot of time and phone calls and possible a manual adjustment in the end.

I logged into my account and saw the new price. I submitted a request to unlock my device and it was rejected because I hadn't fulfilled my contract (September 2016). I called support and they told me that only the ETF would be waived for 1-2 months and that they wouldn't unlock the phone.

So my question is..
-I planned to use my unlocked ATT iPhone 6 to test out Cricket, Consumer Cellular, and even GoPhone over the next six months. Does anyone know if I cancel service with the ETF, can I do anything with this phone on the other carriers? Are there any other options?

Right now, I'm left scratching my head and thinking my only option, other than staying with att and/or adjusting my current plan with att, is to cancel service and sell this locked iphone so that i can buy an unlocked one for use on one of these other carriers?

Thanks for any guidance

So what are you doing phone'wise?

Keeping our phones. As per the retention person I spoke to at ATT, once we port our number and effectively cancel ATT, the devices are ours and they will give us the unlock codes. I had them note it in my account as well for safety.

There should be no reason once ETF fees are paid (or comped because the switch) that they should not unlock the phones.

I cancelled a unlimited data plan of AT&T and 2-year contracts of 2 lines today. I chose 6GB mobile share plan w/d rollover data, which was not available online but I called AT&T customer services. I could also remove 2-year contracts with overriding technique. I ordered 2 of basic smartphones for $170 ($80/phone + Taxes). The new phones with NEXT plan could remove existing 2-year contracts. It's cheaper than paying a ETF.

Before switch: 700 minutes $60 + 1 unlimited plan $35 (2 year contract ends on 9/17/2017) + 300MB plan $20 (2 year contract ends on 9/13/2016) + $10/additional line + 2 x $5/200 messages + Taxes = $135 + Taxes = $147
Before switch w/d 20% FAN discount:
$48 + $28 + $20 + $10 + $10 = $116 + Taxes = $128

After switch: 6GB mobile share plan $40 + 2 lines x $25/lines + Taxes = $90 + Taxes = $102
After switch w/d 20% FAN discount:
$32 + $50 + Taxes = $82 + Taxes = $94

I can switch to other carriers without any restriction now. If I switch to cricketwireless, it will become $45(5GB plan) + $35(2.5GB plan) (Taxes are included) = $80.

I find it hard to believe that they won't unlock the phones after you port out. Then the phone would be locked to AT&T forever? I'll have to call retentions and confirm for myself before I leave AT&T.

I'm switching us to t-mobile. Got 10 gigs each for my wife and I for $100.

I've been trying T-Mobile using a prepaid SIM for the past few weeks. Coverage definitely isn't as good as AT&T, but I was in Canada all day today, and it was awesome not having to worry about roaming. I think coverage is adequate in the areas I use it the most, so I think I'll still switch.

You can get out of your contract without paying the ETF just by giving up your unlimited and switching to a new AT&T plan? I thought you had to leave AT&T completely.

I've actually been trying T-mobile for Canada as well, it is awesome up there, then it's so-so to some places in northwest, especially close to the border.

With regards to your last note, that's what I thought too.

So my latest update. I ordered my t-mobile sim cards. My original plan was to put the sim cards into 2 older phones, port the #s over and then get our phones unlocked and switch the sims to our newer phones. I spoke to the retention department at ATT and was asking them how long after the # was ported could I get my unlock code. The woman was very nice and expedited things by cancelling our current contracts on the spot. I then went into the tool and requested our unlock codes. Got them and have them now for when out sim cards arrive on Thursday.

I admit that I wasn't keen on leaving ATT. But my wife and I each have our own accounts with unlimited data and while ATT tried to make us a great deal, it either involved buying two new phones (like someone mentioned above) to get 5 or 6 gigs on each line for around 100+ taxes or some other "jury rigging."

We're getting unlimited talk/text and 10 gigs each on our lines for $100 + tax. It was a no-brainer at this time. We would consider going back to ATT at some point if they offer a package that makes sense.
