Do I remember reading somehwere in the previous pages about AT&T offering less trade in if you're ordering a 12 Pro? My wife is getting that (and upon reconsideration, I am too), and we have 2 XR's to trade in. Just wanted to check to make sure that we are gonna get the best deal.

Right now ATT is offering $800 for the 12 and the 12 pro and $700 for the 12 mini and the 12 pro max. I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes and goes up to $800 when the mini and the max are actually available in November.

I was wondering that myself. Why offer less on a more expensive phone? Unless they the the max is going to be in greater demand?

I have an XS 64GB that works fine but has a cracked back. Trade-in site says the value is $93.10. Less than $2 is going to keep me from being eligible for the promotion which is quite the bummer.

I wonder what’s happens if you go thought the whole process and ATT Decides not to give you the whole $800 credit ? If they deem the condition one trade in is not up to their standards?
This is why best to do it in-store. I did the trade for the iPhone 7 (from 6) and got full credit.

By any chance do you have AppleCare+? In this case, it might be worth doing the ($100?) accidental damage replacement so you get the full $800 credit.

Here are the plans that qualify Unlimited Plus Unlimited Choice II Unlimited Plus/Choice Enhanced Unlimited &More/&More Premium Unlimited Starter/Extra/Elite Unlimited Value

Wow, that’s unfortunate. There is another promo that gives you a $350 credit for a trade in that’s worth more than $35, so you would qualify for that. $800 is a lot better than $350, but $350 is probably more than that phone is worth, so it might still be a decent deal for you.

One more question for everyone.

I would rather trade my old phone into a real person at the store. However, when I went to my local store today to get my new plan setup, they told me that if I order it online rather than at a store, that I have to do the trade in via mail. If I purchase in store, I can trade in in store. They told me it had to do with making sure all of the steps of the process went smoothly, etc.

If I order online in the morning, will I be able to trade in to a real person in a store?

I am not entirely sure, but I don't think that's correct if you plan to take advantage of the $800 offer. The fine print says "This is not an early upgrade program. Trade-in device may not be on existing installment plan."

Maybe others have a different take, but I paid off the rest of my existing installment plan so that I don't encounter any issues when the preorders begin tomorrow.
That's cool. I will just trade-it in for the new one and not worry about the credit deal. Thanks!

That isn't true. If you go to Apple's website and go through the motions and then select AT&T deals link for info, it clearly says to say you do not have a trade in...Apple will send you the phone, then AT&T says you have 30 days to mail or bring in the trade in device.

Yea the $350 is what the chat rep told me. Looks like the phone in current condition sells between $250-$350 on eBay so I’ll probably go that route. I’d rather take $50-$100 less and have the money now than get $350 over 30 months.

Can someone summarize the down sides of doing the AT&T deal?

Really the only downsides are for people who upgrade their phone often. You get $800 in credits paid out over 30 months, but if you pay off your phone early so you can sell it then the credits stop. So if you were planning to keep your phone for 30 months anyway then there’s no reason not to take advantage of the deal.

A friend offered me their 15% F&F discount. I was well down the path of using that before I stopped, did some resarch, and realized how good this ATT offer appears to be. I'm already on an eligible unlimited plan so I get $800 for trading in this iPhone 8 Plus instead of the $210 Apple was going to give me? Sign me up!

I read on Macworld that you could still buy the phone directly from Apple, but still get the credits on AT&T.
"This is the first time in a long time you can get carrier trade-in deals when buying direct from Apple."

Surprised so many people are going for this considering your phone is LOCKED to ATT for 30 months.

I’ve been with ATT for the last 19 years. Another 30 months with ATT doesn’t concern me. And frankly if something happened and I wanted to move away from ATT then I can buy out the contract and get the phone unlocked. I’d lose some of the $800 credit doing that, but if I bought an unlocked phone outright I would get no credit at all.

are you guys going to try to get the activation fee waived?

There’s some risk to doing this now. In the fine print of the offer it says the following. (I added the bold)

Purchase an eligible smartphone on a qualifying installment agreement, including taxes on full retail price (up front) and $30 activation/upgrade fee.

It hasn’t happened to me (because I didn‘t try to get a fee waived) but I have seen posts by people who called and had their activation fee waved and then ATT refused to give them the credits or promotion because paying the activation fee is specifically called out as a requirement for the promotion.
