I was fooled in that case... the chat started automated but was soon transferred over to my new best friend, Daryl after I persisted in not answering the stock questions. Daryl had access to my account so he was a very clever (albeit slow) bot indeed.

I just lost 45 minutes of my life I'll never recoup with the slowest online chat being to ever roam this planet. "Daryl" couldn't get past his dumb marketing questions to give me any answers, information, or comparative numbers. Yes, I want to change plans because, (yes) I know I have to in order to get the $800 trade-in for my 8plus. Arrgh. Which unlimited plan "Daryl?" Is it that difficult? No, I'm not telling you what I use my data for. I have a Foundation account... can you factor that in? Hello... hello... can you hear me? Okay, rant over. Call AT&T or roll the dice with the online chat support again? We never even got to the fees: activation fee, upgrade fee? Loyalty consideration for being with AT&T since it was Cingular Wireless? oops, I forgot to stop ranting.

OMG. This 'Daryl' stuff is so true.

I can't believe how many times I've tried the online chat to ask a simple question like, 'What are the pricing on your new unlimited plans?' The 'Daryl' wants to know my account number or something. I'm like, 'No. You don't need to know that. This is a simple question and my account doesn't matter'. Then he's like 'Give me a few minutes until I look up this information for you, I know your time is valuable.' And I'm thinking.... 'Ummmm... no you don't! You should KNOW this without looking anything up!' . After a couple of minutes I see it going nowhere, I have to google myself and find the information out quicker than 'Daryl' can get back to me... and along the way he'll ask me questions like, 'What do you use your phone for / What types of entertainment choices do you like on TV' etc. etc. etc. It's maddening!

I guess people don’t get that I don’t want the iPhone 12 nor do I want any credit. 5G is not available in my area and the 12 has nothing over the 11 that I care about.

Also, I still win in the long run by keeping my phone for 3 or more years. I save $500+ by not upgrading even with the $800 credit. That $500+ is worth much more worth in my 401k than in an iPhone that depreciates.

Why would I turn over a perfectly good iPhone 11 Pro Max 512 Gb and then pay $500+ difference for an iPhone 12 Pro Max 512 GB that offers nothing of which I care, except 5G (not available in my area)?

No one really cares that you don't want to upgrade. It is just silly to say there is some sort of financial disadvantage to take advantage of a 0% interest installment loan and that it somehow impacts cashflow versus paying for it upfront.

Daryl is probably interacting with 10 customers at once - hence the slow response.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. But, "he" still didn't manage to produce any numbers or plans in 45 Minutes. The response time was about once every two minutes.

So just to share my experience today in case anyone else is in the same boat...

I’m currently already on an unlimited plan with AT&T (Unlimited & More), so I called AT&T this afternoon to see if my plan would be eligible for this deal. Turns out I’m in a grandfathered plan, and it’s not eligible for the $800 credit (for trading in my iPhone X). I would need to switch to one of their newer unlimited plans in order to take advantage of the deal. BUT, my grandfathered unlimited plan does not include 5G access, so if I want 5G access on my new 5G iPhone 12 I would need to change my plan anyways...

I’ve been with AT&T since the first iPhone, and I tend to keep my phones for longer than I used to, so this seems like a no brainer to me.
I have Unlimited & More Premium and was able to get the promo. I don't want to change as I get both HBO Max and Watch TV. New plans don't include the latter.

Silly question but, what condition does the phone need to be in to get this deal?

If I send them my iPhone X, which has a swollen battery pushing the display off, what will they consider that?

Whats to stop me from opening a single line of service, trade in and then cancel the line?

I haven’t done the trade in but the screen usually is the main qualification item for value.

You mean you’re screwing yourself.
If you have the cash to put down on a phone then you also have the cash to put in the bank and withdraw over 30 months.
The no credit thing is nice, I get it.
But it’s 100% self-imposed.
Don’t blame AT&T for not knowing how to handle your own money.
Also, the device access fee per line on AT&T is $40 for devices not on an installment plan. You get a $20/month discount (so a $20 fee) for having a device on an installment plan. You'd be stupid to pay in full and think you're 'beating the man' somehow, and give up a $20/month discount.

Yeah if the screen were cracked I wouldn't even have to wonder, but its actually not and is still functional...its just detaching from the device now, I believe due to battery swelling.

Did they add 5G to that plan?
No. I doubt they will (though anything is possible). But I don't live in an area where 5G is coming anytime soon so it's not an issue. To be honest I don't think it would be an issue if I lived in a 5G covered area either. I have no issues with 4G/LTE. I'm upgrading from an X so it's pretty big upgrade for me, even without 5G.

How much, I guess. Thin as paper or you could measure with ruler. They like to use word, fully functional.

So if I have 2 lines on my account, each with an iphone X I can trade in each for $220 plus the $800 each?

If that's the case it would be about $7.00 per iphone 12 on my bill, is that right?

Wouldn’t be surprised if did. Just not right away so they can get people to switch.

I'm assuming by "$220" you meant buying iPhone 12 Pro (which is $200 more than base 12)? If so then, yes, after the 26.67 bill credit each month you will only have a (phone) payment of $6.67 per month for each phone. If that is not what you meant then I don't understand your question.

Nothing will stop you from doing that, but there no benefit to you. The $800 credits are applied as $26.67 credits each month for 30 months, but as soon as you cancel the line the credits will stop, so if you immediately canceled the line then at most you would get a single $26.67 credit.

I was looking at the 12 pro max, and trading in a X for $220 each, so that's a $1020.00 discount between the $220 trade in and the $800 for each line\phone?

I wasn't considering upgrading now, but for the discount I will be!

According to the fine print your trade needs to have a value of $95 of higher after answering the device condition questions at http://tradein.att.com to get the full $800 credit. There is another deal where you can get a $350 credit if your device value is $35 or higher after answering the device condition questions.

Have you notified Apple?
I know the phone is off-warranty but that still seems weird to have a swollen battery on a <3-year old phone.
But to answer your question I would expect AT&T to reject it.

"Is the device otherwise free of breaks or cracks in the housing, keypad, hinge, or battery door?"
It would be hard to argue that a lifted screen isn't a crack in the housing.
Not crack like fracture but crack like leave the door open a crack.
;)
