AT&T Will Unlock Off-Contract iPhones Starting Sunday, April 8

also, i'm new to this forum. i assumed there was a private message feature, but i feel like i'm searching in vain for it. does it not exist? :confused:

I just got off the phone with tech support and they gave me a case number. I`m in the same situation as you. Bought an iPhone 4 off ebay. I just called tech support at +18668013600 (used the chat in Gmail since I'm currently in Turkey). And I just said I bought an off contract iPhone and that I'd like it unlocked. Gave the IMEI and they gave me a case number. Will have to wait about a week but I hope it will happen in a day :)

I just used my cousins AT&T account since they had one. Looks like I'll be getting an unlock code on the 16th! :) When I recieve the chat script I will post it here for others to see.

I wonder why some people are being told the 16th and others are getting the unlock within hours...

I was told the 16th after calling 611 and talking to tech support. Wish I had a T Mobile Sim to test. I did try a restore in iTunes but got no "you are unlocked" message.

An old de-activated tmobile sim will work too.
 
No contract purchase

I need help with the terminology. I need iphone 3GS for mom overseas. I have an offer for a iphone 3GS purchased as no contract: "It was paid for without a contract."
Does it mean the phone is factory unlocked ?
Is off-contract the same as unlocked ?

Ok, just went through chat and got a case number, although I'm not sure if I was successful or not.

I was told I wasn't eligible for an unlock because I was under contract, so I told them that I had paid full price for the phone. After a looooong wait the rep finally told me that in order complete my request I needed to FAX in proof of purchase. I expressed that I had no access to a fax machine to be able to do so, and was told that it was the only method available to submit this information. Okaaay...

But, it sounds like she is submitting my IMEI number to the tech people who do that sort of thing. Whether or not they actually do it will probably depend on their mood... I guess I'll see and try back in a could days if nothing happens.

i really need someone of you guys to help me get in touch with AT&T as i live overseas and would like to unlock my off contract Iphone 4, i'm the second user where i bought it from a friend, i can give the IMEI and purchase date

I'm so annoyed that AT&T is finally unlocking iPhones and they won't do so with those on contract. What is the difference to them. I'm still obligated to pay My bill. There always has to be a catch with AT&T which is why my next iPhone will be on Verizon if they don't sort this out.
 
I just filed for 5 unlocks of different older devices, all but one were on one of my accounts. Got case numbers for each of them, not a single problem at all the online Tech Support guy was super helpful.

Devices I asked to be unlocked:
iPhone
2 iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4

Now the waiting for the emails back, said the same thing usually a day or two but for sure by the 16th.
 
are they unlocking phones based off the users contract of the phones IMEI number?

Arent all iPhone 4s on contract until at least June 2012?
 
I also did not get a case number after my unlock call. Spoke to online chat a few minutes ago and they said unlock would be available in 24-48hrs. They told me I would not receive any more notification as to when the unlock was ready, but just to try the steps after that time.

Just finished up my chat with a live agent and just like everyone else, my case will be forwarded to another team and I'll receive confirmation by the 16th. All in all really easy call (not a lot of questions, only asked for my IMEI), worst part was my 20 minute wait.

same here, i have 8 lines with ATT and only ask for one line which needed to travel for next week and they said no exception. Were you able to file a complain because i really wanted to do so but cannot find anywhere i can file a complaint. Is it ATT's strategy that wont let you file complaint? lol

odd... i never got a case number. hopefully i still get my email! :eek:
 
I just got of with the online chat and they are apparently going to unlock my two on-contract iPhone 4's. He never mentioned that they were on contract. edited correspondence is below. I'm really hoping this actually goes through but I have my doubts. At least I have the transcript if they give me trouble about it.

rep: We'll be able to unlock the iphones for you. I'll need to file a case for each one to get the unlock codes for you. I'll do that for you now

Me: great

rep : Thank you. Give me 2-3 minutes to file these cases for you

Me: no problem

rep: A trouble ticket has been submitted for your issue. The expected resolution date for this ticket is April 16th, but you may hear back from us within 24-48 minutes. Your ticket number is CM20120408_xxxxxxx and CM20120408_xxxxxxx

Me: so will my iPhones get unlocked after the ticket is resolved

rep: You'll receive an email with the unlock codes for each iphone and instructions on how to unlock them
