I called AT&T at around 11:00 a:m, got my 3GS unlocked by around 1:00pm.... Guy was trying to figure it out while having me on hold lol. Anyhow, at the of it all he asked me to do the restore while he was on the phone. Restored, and unlocked!!
Letting everyone know. I just successfully unlocked an iPhone 4 for another MacRumors user. I guess it is possible to unlock an iPhone that has never been used on your account. Cheers all! Happy unlocking.
If that's the case... if anyone wants to trade mutual favors, PM me and hopefully we can have similar success!
Did you just say that you had bought the phone off eBay or something?

I'm not even an AT&T customer. Should I still go through with making an "Access ID" and trying to chat with tech support?
call att this morning , they verified my info and imei , then transfer me to a tech , the tech told me is done and forward me the instruction and said will call back tomorrow to make sure everything is ok but did not give me any case number.later i received the instruction thru email but i still not able to unlocked after going thru the whole itunes process . .. wondering did they really process my request since i did not receive any case number from them ...anyone here have the same thing

How long did they take to send an email? i gave them my email, but they never sent anything..[/QUOTE
received 5 mins after the conversation end. did they give you any case number?
Just got off the web chat with AT&T
Got him to submit the unlock for my old iPhone 3GS that was replaced with iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4 itself that was replaced with iPhone 4S.
He refused to submit for another iPhone 4 that is currentyly in use and the contract will end in June.
Don't you have to restore the phone? I think last I checked, the carrier lock settings are applied at activation, so if they have been changed, you need to restore the phone to force it to contact Apple servers to re-activate, which will now activate it as unlocked. I believe that immediately after activation iTunes should show a "Congratulations, your iPhone is unlocked" before letting you proceed with the rest of setup.call att this morning , they verified my info and imei , then transfer me to a tech , the tech told me is done and forward me the instruction and said will call back tomorrow to make sure everything is ok but did not give me any case number.later i received the instruction thru email but i still not able to unlocked after going thru the whole itunes process . .. wondering did they really process my request since i did not receive any case number from them ...anyone here have the same thing
