Somebody want to email a proof of purchase for a white iPhone 4S AT&T wouldn't believe I paid full price lol

Would this path to unlock work for a iPhone 4S purchased with 2yr contract last year?

On the line that purchased the iPhone and is under contract, upgrade to a new phone at full price. Cease using the iPhone 4S and request unlock from AT&T. Return full price phone to AT&T for refund. Resume using newly unlocked iPhone 4S.

Or how about for those that have had their iPhone 4S replaced by Apple and are using a phone with new IMEI. Simply cease using the iPhone and use a dummy phone. Request unlock from AT&T and claim it as a purchase via eBay or Craigslist. Once unlocked resume using newly unlocked iPhone 4S.

I called AT&T Tech Support and was able to get my iPhone 3GS unlocked no problem. In fact, the representative waited on the line to ensure I received my unlock confirmation email, at which point he told me to backup and restore my phone to receive my unlock. I did this and was able to receive my unlock IMMEDIATELY. I then asked the representative if he could unlock my wife's iPhone 4, but he said he was unable to since the iPhone 4 was activated in June 2010 and would not be eligible for unlock until next month.

After hanging up with the Tech Support rep, I got online and contacted AT&T Chat support. The Chat rep agreed to unlock my Wife's iPhone 4 upon confirmation that her line was not under contract (we used my line for her upgrade). The rep opened a ticket and said I would receive as confirmation email within the next 72hrs (so not immediate like the phone rep).

I also put in a ticket to have my Original iPhone 2G unlocked (he said you can do up to 5 devices per year).

Exegesis48: did AT&T Tech Support asked you for personal info regarding your past contract. the thing is that I bought my iPhone 4 from a friend in the US. I can do it myself or my friend is the only one that can unlock the iPhone??

My call was handled as being in relation to my current AT&T account. I gave them my phone number and various other account details prior to the unlock request.

I would just like to thank all you dishonest lying ***holes for abusing this policy so badly in the first 24hrs that its sure to be canceled in record time .

Anyone want to start placing bets on how long it will be before apple & at&t reverse this new policy.

They won't cancel it. If anything, they'll relax the terms - I'm pretty sure the only reason they opened up unlocks is because Verizon and Sprint offer them. Once the hype of the AT&T unlocks dies down, people will be clamoring for on-contract unlocks (which really they should do since the rest of their phone can be unlocked on-contract).

At worst, I can see AT&T maybe tightening the verification procedure

Wow. AT&T is only locking phones not tied to a contract. Why should a phone that has paid off its subsidy not be entitled to unlocking. Heck, the real question is... why did it take this long?!

Would someone with an account be willing to try pushing mine through again? I tried calling CS yesterday but I'm doubtful that it will be successful or that I went through the right process since I am not an AT&T customer and got the phone off eBay. I'd really really really appreciate it.

Is there anyone here who paid a full price on the iphone (contract-free), never had an account on AT&T, isn't a citizen of the US, and got his unlock already?

When I called, they only asked me for my name, IMEI, state that I live in, and my email address...

Got a case number with a resolution date of april 17th, but said I could get an email with unlock code/instructions as soon as 48-72 hours...

Who said anything about what ought to be true actually being true?

Fyi the AT&T press release says "and their accounts must be in good standing". It would be difficult to have an account in good standing if you didn't have an account.

Good standing means you've met contractual agreements.

AT&T has another phrase they use: current and in good standing
(eg: http://www.att.com/esupport/article...Account+Manager+from+your+TV#fbid=m9qtlOmQXNx)

If good standing implied current then this phrase would be redundant.

In addition, the press release stated:

The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

I'm pretty sure early termination fees only occur when you're closing an account.

GreemMonster: can you send me their telephone NUmber??

Alright so here's my story. I called twice; once to unlock my iPhone 3GS, and another to unlock my sister's iPhone 3GS. Both calls successful in creating a case.

I NEVER had an account with AT&T. My sister and I both got iPhones off craigslist, etc, solely for use with T-Mobile.

I used Skype to call 1-800-3310500, then pressed 1, then pressed 0 to get to an AT&T service representative.

The first thing they ask is for your AT&T Wireless number.
Since I don't have an AT&T number, I replied "Sorry I don't currently have an AT&T account; I'm calling just to ask a question."

Then they ask for a phone number in case the call gets disconnected. I give them my T-Mobile cell number in both cases, but I guess any phone number should be fine.

They then asked what I would like to inquire about.
I reply (something along the lines of), "I have an old iPhone lying around [that a friend gave me, or whatever excuse], and I heard that AT&T is able to unlock iPhones now. I would like to know if I could get mine unlocked even though I don't currently have an account with AT&T."

They reply that it should be fine. Asked for my name, email, and IMEI. They don't do the unlock right away though; they say they submit a case to their "unlocking team", and they say it should be resolved by April 17.

The same thing happened for both phone calls in a row. No rejections (unlike other people. I must be lucky :) ).

If others are in the same situation as me (iPhone from craigslist, no AT&T account, etc), you should try to give them a call!!! It could work ;)

Outside USA

I bought a full paid iPhone 4 in SFO, but i never used it as I had to fly back to India. Hence I have never had any relation with AT&T, no AT&T phone number, am not in USA (not even a US citizen), and have my phone locked to AT&T.

Could someone help me unlock my phone? I will be most grateful.

I can send my EMEI numbe to whoever is willing to help :)

P.S. Its not on any contract.

Hello!
I've also contacted AT&t, and they've opened a case for me and said i'll get an e-mail on the 16.
However, i've seen that people got their unlock earlier, so i've called apple to check for the status, but they said i should call AT&t again, as they can't check for it.

Anyway, i'm using gevey with my local sim card (not AT&t), and it is activated using the SAM app.
How will i know when it's unlocked? should i take the gevey out for it to be able to unlock?
I don't want to restore because i'm afraid my BB will get upgraded and i'll get screwed.

Same exact question... Anyone?

kentsommer, can you help me with unlock my iPhone, please?

I'm from the Netherlands, so call to US is expensive and I have no AT&T account.

Can you send me a PM?

Doesn't matter, I'm from the Netherlands and using Skype it won't cost you a Euro for what, 20 minutes calling? Also, I've bought it full price at the Apple Store and they would help me if you have your receipt.

I don't have a receipt, because i have bought it from ebay. I don't know the previous owner.

I will try with skype, we will see.

I just called AT&T to unlock my iphone that I bought by paying no-commitment price but they say it is not eligible for unlock. Frustrated, I hope that women I talked with was looking somewhere wrong.
:D
You already have an uncloked iphone, is that what you are saying? Or you bought a carrier locked iphone at the unlocked price? if you owned it since day one and there is no issues with any accounts you have or its been assoicated with then it is a safe asumption that the CSR you spoke to was either just an idiot, misinformed, or most likely just some combination of the two.
