I got one phone unlocked. Hoping that the other one would get unlocked on Monday.

Here's the history:
1. Never been an AT&T customer and never activated the phones with AT&T. Bought them at full price at an Apple Store.
2. Filed two cases over the phone on April 9, late morning EDT, and faxed purchase receipts. Resolution date given was April 17.
3. With no emails and no unlocks, filed two (more) cases over chat on April 17 since people said chat seems to be a quicker option.
4. Called a couple of times after the deadline and was told by CSR and tech support agent that I just had to wait.
5. Got an email on April 20 for one phone that it's unlocked (with the unlock procedure). The funny part is that the case number is from April 17 (CM20120417_394xxxxx), from the ones that I filed over chat. The cases I filed over the phone on April 9 are still pending!!!

Unlock procedure:
1. Turned off the phone, switched from Gevey to carrier SIM in the normal SIM tray. No deactivation through redsn0w or a restore of the phone.
2. Started iTunes, connected the phone to boot it up.
3. iTunes showed an "error activating your phone, try later" message. Meanwhile, the phone tried activating over WiFi and seemed to have succeeded (no messages though).
4. Quit iTunes and started it again. It connected to the iTunes Store and displayed the unlock message!

The carrier name displayed is the correct one. No strange names there. Now I just have to wait for the other phone to get unlocked, even though its case number from chat is just one number greater than the previous one. At least for me, it seems like what people said about chat being quicker is true. This despite the fact that even over chat I had to get cases created, with no immediate unlocks, and also fax the purchase receipts.

Which number did you fax the proof of purchase? Did you simply write your case no on the top of the fax or some other info ?

can some one tell me what is the proof of purchase? i bought an iPhone from a local forums! the other one was bought from the local cell phones market!! and how the hell i am supposed to generate a proof of that now?

Got my iPhone 4 on contract unlocked

I must've talked to a nice tech rep. My phone wasn't eligible to be unlocked until Dec 12. But I told her I was going to Paris and she says ok I'll submit the unlock. Took 10 minutes, and now I'm unlocked!

By the way, I was jailbroken on 5.0.1. I kept my JB by using Redsn0w, and unchecking "jailbreak" and leaving "deactivate" checked. Then I connected to Itunes and it activated without restoring and I was unlocked in 15 seconds. No restore and I still have my jailbreak. Selling now on Ebay and getting a 4S.

Thats good news, will try calling in the morning..Were you straight with them about not being a customer though?

Yes, I told them I had never been an AT&T customer, and that I bought my phone from a friend (actually, I bought it off of Craigslist). I think you'll be fine if you tell them that you have never been their customer, it's just that I believe it takes longer for non-customers to get their phones unlocked.

Faxing instructions for proof of purchase

Which number did you fax the proof of purchase? Did you simply write your case no on the top of the fax or some other info ?

I had faxed to 800-328-1677 with a cover page before. Over chat, the following were the specific instructions given (I've formatted it for better readability here):

"Instruct the customer to fax proof with the following information displayed prominently on the cover page and/or the receipt:
The term: Device Unlock Request
Customer name
Mobile number of the device being unlocked
Contact preference - e-mail or phone number
Clarify case number
Inform the customer that the fax must be received by the appropriate team within 48 hours or the request will be denied. The Device Unlock Team reviews the receipt and confirm it was purchased at the no commitment price or deny the request. National Consumer Device Unlock Team Fax Number: 800-328-1677"

I faxed it with a cover page stating "Device Unlock Request for iPhone 4", along with the name, email address, IMEI number and case number.

WOW, Just called at&t and my case was created and accepted and I was promised my unlock code within 72 hours!! Will let you guys know how it turns out!!

dabnabbit!

Dabnabbit, I'M STILL WAITING for a phone I tried to unlock from the 9th. What gives?

Requested Unlocks for both my phones I bought on ebay which are out of contract. I was informed by the rep to await contact by 30th April 2012. We will see if they are true to their word.

that is the same case as mine! i hope they get unlocked! i dont know whether my device's contract has been terminated or not:/ but the rep said that it has met the preliminary eligible criteria! and now the other rep said that its still on the contract and it cant be unlocked!

called them last Saturday asking to unlock two iPhone 4 bought from eBay, was turned down by the 1st CS saying the phone were not in service for full two years. Called again, the CS did not ask anything but the IEIA number and filed two cases to apple. Was told need to wait to the 23rd.

Got the following mail yesterday, completely different than all other people posted here.

power on the phone, did a reset-> earase all. while rebooting, skip the wifi and was asked to connect to the iTuner, one second after connected to ituner, iTuner printed 'congradulation, ete...". rushed to a tmobile store to cut a tM micro sim card for go phone, all worked well. Unlocked two phones the same way. While I connec to ituner, i put a ATT sim card in it.

When I called, i used my wife's ATT wireless number, but it seems it really does not matter.

Dear Customer:

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding your AT&T service. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. The issue has been resolved.

Should you have any further needs regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to call us at 1 800 331-0500 and reference the tracking number shown above.

Sincerely,
AT&T

Wonderful, I'm glad to hear that.
How do you know it's unlocked? I assume you tried a different carrier's sim card. I believe it should say Carrier 12.0 instead of AT&T 12.0, but I could be wrong.

When I did a restore in iTunes, I got the congratulations your phone is unlocked message. I will try a different carrier's SIM when I am out of the US.

I finally received my emails yesterday. I had called on April 8th. My 2 and 3G unlocked just fine.

I did the same with my 3gs ios 4.1 that was jailbroken and it unlocked. I decided to go ahead and upgrade it to ios5.1 since it was unlocked now and that was the only reason I had jailbroken it anyway. Big mistake, the only thing I can get now is that I don't have a sim installed when trying to activate from iTunes. Restored it a couple of times and tried an AT&T sim as well as a tmobile sim. Same message. Tried it with wifi a few times as well and received a message saying the activation servers could not be reached.
After numerous attempts it appears I have a brick for now. The only message I get in iTunes is "there is no SIM card installed in the phone you are attempting to activate. Please disconnect and insert a Sim card into the phone. I have tried 4 different ones now. If i try to activate via wifi I get a message saying the activation servers are not available. Anyone know a work around?

i don't think they would unlock 4s that easily. However, if they don't, you still can buy your freedom..

Been fiddling around with that for the last two hours, but it finally worked with a Dutch provider. Didn't got the AT&T mail just yet, so it definitly isn't unlocked too. Hoping to receive the unlock mail in the future, so I don't have anything to do anymore to unlock it.

it worked for me too? how come Apple not patched IMSI spoofing yet?!!! strange

Now with my iphone 4 unlocked by Apple/AT&T, should I or can I upgrade it to iOS5.1? it kept reminding me all the time.

Well I tried to talk to AT&T Tech Support through online chat. I got through, and they asked me for the IMEI number and how I bought it. I told them I got it from my out-of-country friend. However, they said that the phone was ineligible. The phone was actually bought from CL from somebody who had canceled their AT&T account a week ago so I'm pretty sure I should've been eligible. What can I do now?

Edit: I talked to another Tech Support agent over chat and this time they confirmed my suspicions. Since the account was only canceled last week, I'd have to wait until this billing cycle was over to be able to unlock it. I tried to get him to unlock it by telling him I was traveling to Paris before the billing cycle was over, but he said he couldn't do anything. Well, it was a good try. I might just try to pull the 'I want to talk to your manager' line later to try to streamline this process.
