I did both. I called first to submit my request, they told me it would be unlocked the 24th. On the 23, I did the online chat(I'm not a customer, I used the link that was posted in this thread) and told them that I would be traveling overseas in a few days and they told me that my request had not been processed and that they were going to go ahead and process it. If I were you, I would try what I did. :)

can you please post the link? so that we can give it a try!

Unlocked! Got an email today after calling on the 9th. Resolution date was supposed to be the 17th. Ticket # was CM20120409_3899xxxx. Never been an AT&T customer, got my 3GS off Amazon. Never submitted proof of purchase either. Seems a little patience is all that was needed.

lets see what reply do i get lol but thats a long wait!! 16 days is a long time bro!

Got the other phone unlocked a little while ago. The case for this one was also filed on April 9, 2012 over the phone (with proof of purchase faxed immediately). Both the cases I opened on April 9 were resolved today.

For those who missed the story earlier:
1. Never been an AT&T customer and never activated the phones with AT&T. Bought them at full price at an Apple Store.
2. Filed two cases over the phone on April 9, late morning EDT, and faxed purchase receipts. Resolution date given was April 17, but it took till today to get the second phone unlocked. The first phone was unlocked last Friday against another case I filed through chat on April 17.

Unlock procedure:
1. Turned off the phone, switched from Gevey to carrier SIM in the normal SIM tray. No deactivation through redsn0w or a restore of the phone.
2. Started iTunes, connected the phone to boot it up.
3. iTunes showed an "error activating your phone, try later" message.
4. Quit iTunes and started it again. It connected to the iTunes Store and displayed the unlock message!

I can now leave this thread in peace! :)

I realised that calling after the 17th would result in a) the case being refiled and/or b) being asked for proof of purchase (I lost that receipt a while ago) so i chose to wait it out.

used the chat link. you must have att wireless number linked to the profile. if you don't have it, i guess you can call.

got an email asking for proof of purchase. faxed it. let's see what happens.
iphone 4S. former att customer.

How to confirm if the phone has been unlocked?

I received an email that my phone has been unlocked and have backed-up and restored twice. I didn't see the screen with the unlock message, so how do I check if the phone has been unlocked.
I have an old t-mobile sim.... can I use it to see if the phone is unlocked?
What should I be looking for?
TIA

Yes, you can use your old tmobile sim. If it doesn't say invalid sim then it's unlocked.

The iPhone showed "No Service" for about a minute after inserting the T-Mobile sim .
Then I got a Face Time charges warning and T-Mobile wording.
Does that sound about right for an unlocked phone?

Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked.

Are you serious dude? The moment you see any wording that belongs to any other provider besides AT&T, you are unlocked. :p

:apple: Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. :apple:

Great News !!

I called on the 9th too, but my case is CM20120409_39054xxx... Hopefully I get an email in the next couple of days.

*Update*

WOW, Just called at&t and my case was created and accepted and I was promised my unlock code within 72 hours!! Will let you guys know how it turns out!!

72 Hrs way passed, called at&t again they said by the 30th but im expecting the best..:D
Basically if you live outside the U.S and you have an at&t iphone you need unlocked just tell them you're not a customer (be straight up) tell em where you bought the phone or how you got it and they'll request the IMEI it all stands on that IMEI but once its straight they should give case # (make sure you write it down) for you no problems, just have faith and be HONEST..
Here's the number I used;
"From Overseas"
1-916-843-4685
Then Option 1
Then Option 1 again
Then Option 0 (to speak to a service rep)

Just be straight and honest! Good luck to all!

finally unlocked

i started on 9th and the rep didn't give me a case number to follow so i was lost and tried again on 12th and they told me to wait till 20th and get a case number, today is 25th and yet i heard nothing from them, i was waiting desperately for my case reported on 12th to be resolved until today i get a strange e mail from AT&T with case number different off the 12th one, :D it was the 9th one and I deactivated with SAM and inserted my local GSM SIM and voila i get the nice message in Itunes "Congratulation, Your Iphone Has been unlocked"

Thanks for every one who helped me here and i figured out something, it's getting through, just wait your turn in the lonnnnnng queue

My case was closed... CSR created a new case today

Guess what happened to me? I created two cases on 9th. First one got unlocked 2 days ago. The second one got closed today. I was not informed of it. I called AT&T Rep today and he said the case has been closed due to missing information. DAMN. Information that they did not fill in correct. Now he said I have to create another case and it will be resolved next week.

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

my hopeful unlock case

I am a current AT&T customer under contract. I have a 4S. I had a camera problem and today Apple replaced the iPhone under warranty. No problem. Stuck in the SIM and it worked. Due to a work situation, I have to leave the country for a few weeks. Since it's a rush, I had to purchase a factory unlocked iPhone 4S so I can use Movistar's data plans that are cheaper than AT&T's international rates. I had to do what I had to do. I contacted AT&T online chat and got the IMEI updated (from factory unlocked iPhone) on their end. It all works fine.

I won't be back in time for the 30 day return window, so I plan to sell the warranty replacement iPhone to recoup most of the cost of factory unlocked iPhone when I get back. On a whim, I asked the rep that since I would no longer be using the replaced one, could it be unlocked? She said she couldn't guarantee Apple would say yes since I'm under contract, but she'd put in the request anyways and gave me the case number. 5-7 business days. So we'll see.

Wow that's good for you! You got pretty lucky there! Why would anyone be mad though, :) better "wait" than never :D

I was in the midst of asking a question here when I decided to plug in my phone for umpteenth time when The white apple on the phone (as if the phone was turning on) came up and I thought, "Ok maaaaybe this time". And next thing I know, the blue alert bubble comes up and says activation required, and I knew it had finally been unlocked. iTunes showed an error message, but I just exited out of it and started it back up and got the, "Congrats" message. Now, everything shows vodafone.

So my advice is, just wait. I chatted with them on the 10th.

Requested on April 9th.

FINALLY got my iPhones unlocked today :D:D:D

Submitted two cases on the 9th, and got one email and one phone call today.

I was never an AT&T customer. Got these phones off craigslist. Never asked for proof of purchase or anything. So awesome!!! :]

It sucks though cuz one of my iPhones is still stuck on that lame 6.15 iPad baseband.. still need to use custom ispws to restore, and still cant use gps :(

Verizon has had a international unlock but that is not enough. Start a twitter war on verizon @verizonwireless #Verizonunlockiphone

my day was the 25th so i called today(26th) and they said my case was still being reviewed/processed. I couldn't quite hear him clearly, so I'm still waiting.
