Stop saying $10 - this is now a $15 increase since we have learned that our 200 free text messages are gone. $360 in AT&T's pocket for nothing - add that to the price of a $199 iPhone and you'll see that I'd rather have just paid 399 for it up front!

most of us, i think, use the unlimited texting.. so its $40 and now going to $50.

i would eat 200 text in a day:eek:

what about those that are existing customers but not iphone customers? if we want... the new iphone, do we have to pay extra assuming we're not eligible for an upgrade?

I believe your contract would be wiped out, and you'd have to sign for a new two year deal starting the day of your purchase.

In addition, even if you were eligible for an upgrade through AT&T, I do not believe it would apply to the $199 cost of the iPhone.

here ya go..........

got a few email from work... heres some info for yall.

-data plan will be $30 for the 3G iPhone, no text included.... u can add text a la carte ($5-200, $15-1500, $20-UNL)

-iPhones will be activated in the store at the time of purchase, whether it is an upgrade or a new activation... then all your iTunes stuff u do at home or w/e

-Pricing shown ($199 & $299) are for new two year agreements for new customers or QUALIFIED upgrading customers renewing. Unlike the 2G iPhone you cant just get this one and have your agreement automatically renewed if you arent already eligable (BUT i will say whenever you come into the stores we are fairly easygoing on over riding that, assuming you are atleast one year into your agreement).

NOW as for existing 2G iphone owners.... depending on contractual status and payment history(on time ya know!!) and account is in good standing we will review the account for an early upgrade, and most likely let you upgrade to the new one...

jus a few things for now... will post more when i know more.

AT&T's iPhone 3G Data Plan and No Longer Revenue Sharing

Since Apple no longer receives money from AT&T for iPhone users, why would Apple decide to keep the new iPhone exclusive? What don't I understand?

What will have to be done to use the new iPhone on T-Mobile?

Just a few thoughts/questions
1) Corporate discounts - are they coming back? AT&T says they are putting the iPhone on the same field as every body else so that should mean corporate discounts are back (which will pretty much cover the $10 a month issue...)
2) No texts included in the plan? Really? D@mn
3) What can I do with my existing iPhone? I'd like to give it to a family member/friend

4) Take your lunch to work just 3 times a month and you'll cover the $10 a month - if it's $15 for you take it in 4 times a month. Personally I take my lunch in every day and save enough to eat *pun intended* the cost of both the 3G and the $10 a month :)

I'm definitely impressed with the new phone, but given my past use of the internet/youtube/etc on my existing iphone, I can't say that I'm ready to extend my contract and pay $10 more a month just to be down with the 3G. I just don't use the internet that much and I'm fine with the speeds in which it sends/receives emails. I guess I will wait to see how well the new apps work on EDGE before deciding on whether or not it makes sense to upgrade.

Actually the deal breaker for me is the lack of included SMS in conjunction with having to pay $10 more for data. If we have to pay $10 for a reasonable amount of text messages, that makes the delta from version 1.0 to 3G way more dramatic. also, i haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, is it safe to say that GPS will be free?

Unfortunately, at-home activation caused 25% (at least) of iPhones to not be activated on the designated network (AT&T), and also resulted in active grey-market sales to Russia. I suspect that AT&T was might p***ed about this and forced a revision of the activation process for the 3G.

As other countries have also signed exclusive agreements with Apple, I suspect a similar activation process elsewhere (and no sales of unlocked phones as some had hoped).

It sounds like the value of 1st generation iPhones here in the US could either stay at the current prices, or possibly go up...

For all of you who are completely pissed about the $30/data plan...

Who wants to buy my first-gen iPhone? $199 and you can use it on the Edge network for $20/month!

It will be available on July 12th.

:)

I kind of like this. Because I'm in the UK.

- Monthly plan stays the same. £35 for 600 mins + 500 SMS, unlimited data
- £159 for the handset. But I just sold my old one for £350. £200 profit ain't bad. Actually pays for 6 of the 9 months I've had it.
- Have to start a new 18-month contract. No biggie. O2 aren't that bad.

The only way my mood will be spoilt is if I have to pay £129 to cancel my old iPhone contract. But from the O2 site, I don't think this is the case.

Anybody with a 1st gen iPhone who is thinking about it, sell your current iPhone. The negative press is going to make demand for the old model soar. It's not too late yet.

hahahaha, Give them $10.00 back and they will be lining up. ;-)

it is $10/month for 2 years. that adds up.

I will be sticking with the 1st gen iPhone. I would probably keep 3G off anyway if I had a new one.

That was my point months ago...who cares what the phone sells for...it is the monthly plan that hurts the most.

75+tax= $90 x 24 = $2160 + your $199 (iphone)

Nice little $2400 phone you have there....

So if I buy a new 3G iPhone at an Apple store they are going to require me to sign a contract on the spot? What happens where in some markets there isn't a single exclusive carrier- are Apple employee's suddenly going to turn into mobile phone contract sales people??

Is Apple Regent Street about to become the most up-market phone shop in the West End? And will be forced to display Network info/pricing if no exclusive carrier? What about training? So many questions....

I AGREE!...it definitely seems more appealing to me now.
plus the possibility of no longer having the option of buying one and using it on t-mobile after july 11th annoys me. because for me, i'm always in a wifi zone, so having internet for 30 bucks a month isn't worth it.

That AT&T and Apple have an exclusive 5 year contract. I'm not sure what the terms of breaking it are, but it'd have to be a pretty substantial reason or there'd be huge amounts of $$ to pay.

Don't forget you are getting a full GPS that people can do original funky apps with, and turn the camera into a video camera with the SDK, and apps to give you MMS. The reality is, if you can't step back and say this is the best phone deal on the market, with indeterminate upside functionality with the SDK, you are missing the picture.

...again $30 is a 3G STEAL. That is the tradeoff that Apple and ATT made...Apple gets no revs, ATT gives it you to entice you into 3G.

Has it occurred to people who need to save that they will be able to AIM, Yahoo IM, GTalk, Jabber, Gadu-gadu, or whatever for free? So give up SMS if the $5 to $20 will kill you.

I can live with the extra $10 a month for the 3G data plan. Assuming you have 3G coverage in your area, you are actually getting something tangible for the extra money - faster data service. The $5 premium on top of that for basic SMS service is utterly tacky on AT&T's part, though. You are paying extra for something that was bundled with the previous data plan. Total bush league on AT&T's part.

Ok, well I WAS one of the 56%. Now I am still going to be. The original iPhone data plan was $20/month and that included 200 text messages so now ****ing AT&T is going to charge $30/month and it DOESN'T include any text messaging. Looks like I waited for nothing :(. This really ruins my day. Finally I can afford the phone, but not the service plan.

If I am wrong please correct me.

T-Mobile's 3G in the U.S.A. is terrible. Why would you want to use it on T-Mobile?

You know? Scratch that. I'm revising the price of my offered first gen iPhone.

I was going to sell it to you for $199. But, the more I think about this, since so many of you are arguing that the phone will cost more over two years...I'm just going to price it so it costs less over two years.

So, here's my offer...

First Gen iPhone, with the valued EDGE network and it's associated $20/month data fees...

$299.

That's a savings of $140 over the purchase price of a new 3G iPhone!

And...if you decide you don't want to pay that price for my phone, then perhaps you can stop whining about the price of the new 3G phone!

Ditto. An extra $200 and I'll unlock it for you. Who knows when 2.0 will be cracked.

One interesting thing is that if they are no longer giving apple a cut of the monthly charges AND they are hiking the rate for the data plan, that means they're keeping what they used to give to Apple and well as gouging their customers for more money. :p

I'm not sold on the new iPhone yet. GPS would be nice and 3G would be useful for my frequent trips to Japan, otherwise there's no other benefit for the new iPhone for me.

Hate the idea of the black plastic back, will have to see it in person before deciding on that 'downgrade'.

I was all set to buy one before the data plan prices went up, but now I realize that I'm pretty happy with my 1G iPhone. Could I pay for the extra $15/month (3G + 200 texts)? Probably. But, for some reason $35/month crossed the threshold of more than I'm willing to pay.

Besides, what real new functionality are we getting with the new iPhone? Sure this one has faster internet and better location hardware (GPS), but the 1G does both of those things (albeit not as well as the new one).

I probably should be thanking AT&T for raising the prices--they saved me quite a bit of money by helping me realize that what I have is more than sufficient.
