This was the deciding factor as to if I would upgrade on day one or not. Looks like I'll be waiting.

$20/month is too much as it is. At least give us unlimited SMS for $30/month.

Text Messaging

Ok, I just got off the phone with ATT Business Care, and was told that text messaging wasn't included in the $30 3G plan. Rates for text messaging plans are as follows:

Unlimited-$20
1500 messages-$15
200 messages-$5

My god, you'd think they'd throw that in the 3G price! But no...

Ok since they are treating this as just another phone, can I now get my corporate or government AT&T discount that I've been able to get on any other phone? Iphone was exempt specifically before, but I guess since they are treating it as any other phone, it should apply, right?

wasn't 1500 messages for $10 extra before? Did they increased even THAT by $5?

Thank you Apple and AT&T!

I was nervous about whether to keep or sell my 16GB iPhone before the announcement.

Now I am happy I kept it and the current AT&T plan. I will continue to be just as stoked with it for at least another year until 4G.

What makes me angry is that during the Keynote, Steve Jobs said that people who didn't have an iPhone didn't because it was too expensive. Okay, so lets focus on the NEW customers (of which I am not). NEW customers must sign a 2-year contract before leaving the store (see ya later, iTunes activation), be charged for first months service of $40 voice/$30 data/0 SMS, and oh by the way, you will be an ungodly amount to cancel before the 2 years is up.

How in the HELL does this make it more affordable for people who couldn't afford it the first time? With taxes and everything else, its $300+ walking out the door. Correct?

And don't forget to choose an SMS plan because if you don't, you're looking at a monthly bill of ~$85-90 on a good day.

I guess for us current owners, you pay $10/month more and renew your 2 year contract. Hmmm...

I wonder if I still buy a use 1generation Iphone, will they allow to activate it with old cheaper plans?

thank you for f***ing me big time at&t. I had waited all this time for a new iphone to come out. I have been using my crappy krzr on t-mobile for the longest time and i am so pissed off with it and now to here that i am going to have to dish out $70+ a month when right now i am paying about $45 without data really makes me mad. At&t you have **** on the coats. You smell like you were dipped in a vat of piss...
right now i get 600min a month with 400 text messages for about $45. To get at&t's crappy plan with only 450min a month and 200 text messages that really seems like a slap in the face.
and subsidizing is even more crap. Apple has found a way to make it cheaper to make the iphone not that you are lowering the cost of the iPhone. maybe i will just have to wait until the next generation iphone. i can't believe i am even saying that.
f*** you very much.

you sir are ridiculous.... dish out $70+ a month?!?!? cry me a river, how much do u spend on non necessities?!?!?!? and u complain about cell service w/ UNL data on the most revolutionay phone in the world? not the sign of a gadget/technologically inclined person

KEEP YOUR KRZR!

Figure it this way...

Old iPhone was $400 new one is $200 = $200 discount.

Over life of contract you will pay $240 more in data costs than before.

$200 savings - $240 data expense = $40 more than other iPhone

Nice and convenient to leave out features, design and functionality that don't suit your theory.

Slimmer design, better battery, more talk time, an additional style and gee, uh 3G... but of course that wouldn't help your point at all, so of course you leave that out.

Funny, how 3G was the BIGGEST whining point of the iPhone when it was first released, and now that 3G is here, the whiners won't part with a $10.00 bill.

Just pathetic.

I don't feel like going back in this thread and finding the link but many people have posted that you know have to pay for texts as well. Just check a few posts above.

Was just told by AT&T rep that in addition to whatever voice plan I choose it would be a total of $50 more than that price for unlimited data AND texts!

So with the cheapest voice plan and unlimited data AND texts PLUS all the taxes he computed over $100 dollars for the cheapest plan!

I expected it but it's still better than my old Blackberry plan

It still beats my old unlimited Blackberry Pearl plan which was $40/month. I think the Blackberry plan is now down to $30/month but the iPhone itself beats the crap out of my Pearl.

So I still consider it a good deal. We pay the same price as the Blackberry data plan BUT we get the superior iPhone features. Did everyone really expect to pay Sirloin price for the Porterhouse? I mean, really???

And I think that they still made it more affordable. They gave us a far superior product (3G, GPS, etc...) and it's only costing a little bit more over the course of the contract. It should've been much more expensive.

Looks like Apple's bold experiment to simplify phone purchasing with activation at home has now fallen by the wayside and the carriers are back in their comfort zone: subsidized handsets to lure people into expensive monthly contracts. I have no doubt that the huge number of unlocked iPhones in existence has contributed massively to this U turn - they won't care now if people unlock their phones because you're committed to a 2 year (in the USA) contract before you even get your hands on the phone! This could actually push the price of old iPhones up rather than down once the dust settles...
It would appear that the experiment was not as successful as expected (I would not say "failed") because sales lagged expectations due to the high initial cost and because such a large percentage of phones were broken and never put on AT&Ts network. This second item in particular appears to have forced Apple to go to a more traditional sales model for the 3G. Though there will still be those who break their 3Gs for use on other carriers, at least AT&T gets their $$$.

Great! This gives me a hook to sell my 1G iPhone!

I can understand the frustration; the data plans seem expensive to those who don't use them.

I'm a day 1 iPhone user. I grumbled a bit about the price, but haven't looked back. If you've never used an iPhone, even if you've used other so-called smart phones, you just don't understand how much you're likely to use the data portion of the phone. My usage jumped dramatically from how I used my Sprint Treo.

So, I now have an Edge phone that costs me $20 in data fees. If AT&T told me I could double my download speed for an extra $10/month, I'd upgrade in a minute.

Additionally, I was a bit bummed that they had lowered the price so much on the new phones, because I was hoping to sell my current phone to help pay for my upgrade to the new phone. But, the new price made it look like my old phone would just be a give-away.

But, then this good news! :)

Now, I have a hook to sell my old phone. There are plenty of buyers who will prefer to pay $20/month for the Edge network, and will pay for my phone in order to get that.

Perfect! :)

For me, yes, I can afford the extra $10, but I can't justify it as I don't use the data plan all that much for the price I'm currently paying for with the 1st gen iPhone. The EDGE network is just unusable given its current state.

To give it another perspective, people are paying much less for broadband access (cable/DSL) for a faster speeds. So, ATT is basically saying it is OK for you to pay $64/month to run a crippled iPhone or you pay $75/month to have a better iPhone experience and a 2 year contract. Gee, thanks.

Yes, I know one pays extra for convenience, but I believe there is a line for some of us and ATT just crossed it. I've been a long Cingular/SBC/ATT customer, but this one was the last straw. I'm dropping my DSL service which I've had for almost 9 years. I, for one, will boycott buying a 2nd generation iPhone from ATT. If anything, I'll find other channels to get one.

i'm with you on this. I was ready to buy today if they were available. The dealbreaker for me is that the increase doesn't even include text messaging. That is the last straw. I won't do it. I've been with AT&T FOREVER. I think i may join T-Mobile now.

it is $10/month for 2 years. that adds up.

I will be sticking with the 1st gen iPhone. I would probably keep 3G off anyway if I had a new one.

Just switch out the SIM card...

How is this possible? I thought you had to purchase the activation plan, otherwise pay full price?

Some questions:

• Do you have to activate at Apple Store? If so, will Apple be doing this?

• Why does it say "requires two year activation from..." if you think you can purchase without contract

• Is there anyway to use the 3G hacked and purchase the new iPhone cheap? (ala $199) as $30 x 2 years = $720. Ouch.

It cracks me up....

...that of the several, many posts I have seen here, few if any have bothered to look at what 3G data costs from ATT for any other device. ATT has even made a statement about how significantly negatively it will affect their margins and earnings for 2008 and 2009, but that they perceive it as an investment to gain subscribers.

This is about the best possible news from my perspective. I already pay for unlimited SMS for 3 ATT phones (2 of which are 1st gen iPhones) and a $10 increase for data is positively exciting. I was worriedly anticipating $50 to $60 for unlimited 3G. Look around to see what other providers as well as ATT charge for 3G before you whine.

Further, this seems to be about the best possible 3G radio configuration of any current handset, further improving the data rates.

This is just great, Stephie, especially, when I was watching him talk about people that simply could not afford the iphone and now will be able to afford. But I think he was talking about people in other countries, where AT&T does not rule. Sad Day

I had just come around to accepting the $10 increase and then we find out there are NO text messages - **** THEM! **** THEM! GOD-DAMN **** THEM! What are we going to do about this! We have to make some sort of noise!
