$1,100 a year cost of ownership with a 2 year commitment? That's just insane. I'd love one, but there's just no way I'm that stupid. If I could hook it to my laptop for wireless connectivity, then maybe it would be worth it, but even then it would be a hard pill to swallow.
Old iPhone = $399 up front + $60/mo. = $1119 plus taxes for the first year.
(Edit) 3G iPhone = $199 up front + $70/mo. + $5/mo. for SMS = $1099 plus taxes for the first year.

For those who qualify, minimum FAN plan:
FAN 3g iPhone = $199 up front + $70/mo.-25% = $829 plus taxes.

So everyone who bought the 1st gen iPhone were insane as well, I guess.

$70 + $5 SMS if you want to compare apples to apples.

I am not sure if my question is going to be in the right place. But when Apple talked about not needing background processes due to using a notification system, is this notification system going to be SMS based? I ask because if the phone isn't active the data connection terminates so how does the phone get notifications?

If it is SMS based do we have to have SMS on our account or will it costs us everytime a notification is sent.

I am beginning to think that is why the business data is 45 dollars. They include the push email (which by design rides on the SMS system). Hmm...

I have never heard of push email being SMS based. AFAIK, it's all data based. The push server activates your data connection and pushed the notification out to you.

OH MY GOD! Does this mean if I want to connect to my works' Exchange server, I have to pay the $45 Enterprise Data Plan????????????????? Holy #^$&#!!!!

most companies reimburse employees who have their work email on their personal phone, or they credit u the difference between the two data plans... u should ask about that

For everyone that's complaining about being locked into AT&T with the new phone (which includes me, because AT&T is horrible in my area), what's stopping us from buying the phone, activating the service like we have to, and then just canceling it? Per AT&T's website:
An early termination fee applies if service is terminated before the end of the contract term. The fee will begin at $175 per device and decrease by $5 each month for the term of the agreement. If phone is returned within 3 days, activation fee will be refunded. If phone is returned within 14 days in like-new condition with all components, early termination fee will be waived. Service may be cancelled after 14 days but within 30 days and early termination fee will be waived, but equipment may not be returned.

So between 14 and 30 days, there is no cancellation fee. Or if you go over 30 days, eat the $175, and you'll end up paying $375 for the phone. That's still cheaper than the current iPhones.
Am I missing something? Is there anything stopping us from doing this? I've tried to read all 28 pages, but there's a lot of info to swallow at once.

no no no no.... =) It's saying if you TURN BACK IN THE PHONE early , meaning return it to the store then your cancel fee is Waived.

But if you sign up for new service, and then just cancel without returning the phone then you will have a cancel fee.

It says between day 14 and 30, there is no cancellation fee but you may not return the phone...

I know that getting the email is data based. But how does the device know it has email to get unless it is constantly polling the server? Well from my understanding blackberry push operates sorta like SMS. It sends an invisible message to the device letting it know to download the message from the server.

Basically I want to know how Apple notification service is going to know how to tell you to connect back to the data service if your data connection is dormant? If it uses invisible SMS's will that cost us extra?

Your right! My bad =)

no its not going to costs any extra and it is probably data based.

So basically, we're out the $30-something activation fee. I'm pretty much OK with that.

So why is the business data plan 45 dollars?

I should be able to have my Exchange server push to my phone with just a normal (consumer) data plan?

To unlock and use with T-Mobile :)

yeah but you won't get full functionality though right.

For example, visual voicemail.

I would hate having the tainted feeling that not everything works.

Im spoiled right now with visual voicemail, I dont think i can EVER go back... it's just to nice of a feature to have.

~

P.S. has anyone seen the website www.iphoneapps.org

What's the deal with this thing? they are advertising for 24.95 to get like MMS, video recording, SNES emulator, and a bunch of other crap.

has anyone ever hacked their iphone and tried this out?

I think you can.

the business thing is for like Business accounts i guess.

I mean if you can have MobileMe, which is personal exchange on the normal data plan. I'm pretty sure all you have to do is in your Mail settings, configure your exchange server information.

the Business plan is probably for business accounts

Yeah, but I'd rather have decent coverage. Granted, I would actually use those 14-30 days to test out AT&T. Maybe I'd like it. But for me to keep it, it would have to have made leaps and bounds in coverage in my area over the past few years. I had AT&T a couple years back, and the coverage was HORRIBLE. I couldn't use my phone anywhere.

I'm not tryiing to PLUG att or anything like that, i'm not a bias person. But i have been on Tmobile, Sprint, verizon and even nextel once.

Since i joined over to ATT, i can tell you this that every SINGLE BILL has been the same dollar ammount every month. I was SHOCKED that this was the case, because i was afraid of switching, not only that, but the coverage is Really strong! i was also shocked by this as well.
because if you go Anywhere on the internet you're going to get a huge bandwagon of ATT haters saying the coverage sucks. I read all of this out on the internet and there was so much of it i started getting discouraged, maybe it does suck?

Well they were all wrong.

I live in virginia, have travled to North and SC, also i lived in Wichita KANSAS of all places for 6 months, after being at all of these places i had FULL complete bars every single place, and never lost a call or anything.

ATT is actually IMO done a great job over the last couple of years, maybe they were bad at one point, but right now? I would hurt someone if they took it away from me, they have really given me peace of mind.

I used to deal with BULL SH@#@ every bill with Sprint and t mobile, every month!

id look on my bill and be like "what is this crap on here?!?!"
