we are so screwed

According to the German Spiegel there are several competitors making life easy for European customers. T-mobile is thinking abount incentives and special plans for their valuable G1 "early adopters" in order to not put them off... O2 offers customer a free new G3 iPhone if they extend their contract for another 18 months. Hello, ATT? Do you hear the bells...?(http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/mobil/0,1518,558891,00.html in German)

LOL I'm laughing like crazy reading all the whiners here.
They are same as those that go to McDonalds and order two BigMacs and... a Diet Coke.
What a bunch of spoiled and retarded kids.
Beyond any logical explanation.
USA you have a major problem.

I'm in my 30s and have a 6 figure income. I can easily afford an iPhone and the data plan and the text messages. But I'm not going to buy it. Call me cheap, but I don't think its a good value. I think others here feel the same way. Like many of us here in the USA, I have internet access at home. And I have internet access at work. Many of us don't feel its necessary to pay $35/month for internet access and text messages when not at home or work.

Just because we can pay more doesn't mean we should if it doesn't feel like its worth it to us. I'm sure the iPhone's OS blows away the s40 UI on my old Nokia. But my phone works well, and I already own a Nano. I find it hard to justify the extra expense, even though it wouldn't be a burden to do so. Please don't criticize us because our priorities and/or sense of value differ from yours.

So why is the business data plan 45 dollars?

I should be able to have my Exchange server push to my phone with just a normal (consumer) data plan?

45 is for corp accounts and exchange server...

I think you can.

the business thing is for like Business accounts i guess.

I mean if you can have MobileMe, which is personal exchange on the normal data plan. I'm pretty sure all you have to do is in your Mail settings, configure your exchange server information.

the Business plan is probably for business accounts

exactly, mobileme is for reg customers who want exchange capabilities.

yea i completely understand that, no point in payin for it if ur not using it, makes sense.

But the mobile device is for people on the go, thats what the pricing is suggested for... people who want real web, stocks, youtube, weather, email while they're not at work or home...

there are alot of people that would like to use the wifi only, but it would be a tough fight to convince at&t not to require data plans.

USA you have a major problem.

Two Big Macs is an awful lot of food, but a regular Coke has more empty calories in it than those two Big Macs combined.

Given the choice between cutting down to one Big Mac (or even one ordinary burger) with a Coke, or two Big Macs with a Diet Coke, the "retarded kid" who orders the two Big Macs with the Diet Coke is actually making the healthier choice.

The biggest problem with American diets is not too much food. It's too much processed sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup.

Well OF COURSE it would be a tough fight. Why would they want to let go of all that sweet largesse???

That doesn't change the fact that it SUCKS if you're not interested in an overpriced two-year unlimited Internet contract from AT&T.

So does this really not include text messages?

and can I use it with the old iphone data plan if I simply want to continue on 2g?

Hmm...it's unfortunate that the texts are no longer included. But, the real question for me is: For those who wish to have a family plan, is the data going to cost $30 per iPhone on the family plan?

Family Plan... One iPhone

I am currently an att customer.

My plan:

$60 - 700 minute family plan
$30 - Internet and email for my BJ2 and access to my companies exchange server
$5 - 200 text messages
$10 - Wifes line
$5 - 200 text messages
Plus taxes...

From my understanding if I were to get a 3g iphone:

$200 - Up front for new phone
~$50 for activation and all that crap
$60 - 700 minute family plan
$30 - Internet and email for my 3g iPhone and access to my companies exchange server
$5 - 200 text messages
$10 - Wifes line
$5 - 200 text messages

Isnt' this the SAME PRICE I am paying now???

Why would I not get an iPhone...

No it will not! There are settings on the AT&T side that will prevent it from using the 3G services. My girlfriend had a phone which was 3G and she was getting slow EDGE service. We called and they said they had to enable the 3G services on her account. Just buck up and pay the $10 (its like ~2 gallons of gas :) )

Uhh Dave? Yes it will. I have used the 1G iPhone SIM card to 3G tether for almost a year now.

The Keynote Steve Meant to Give

Breaking Fictional News: In a parallel reality, Steve jobs, realising the err of his recent keynote speech, today used the iTimeMachine to go back to yesterday and present his keynote speech again. The aim? To keep the hearts of Apple enthusiasts who have been raising legitimate concerns over how he delivered the news of the new "cheaper" iPhone, while conveniently omitting information that over the 2-year mandatory contract, the phone would actually be $160 more expensive. Revised keynote excerpted below:

"We know that many people have said that cost was a determining factor holding them back from purchasing an iPhone. We also know and applaud the tremendous amount of work that AT&T has put forth in developing their state-of-the-art 3G network that will be supporting the iPhone. Look at all the amazing benefits of the 3G network will bring to consumers. We also know that this infrastructure has a tremendous cost, and that data plans incorporating the new 3G technology will thus be slightly more expensive. That said, we at Apple are dedicated to putting iPhones in as many of our consumers hands as want them, and I'm proud to say that the new 3G iPhone will start at just $199."
-Steve Jobs, WWDC Keynote

The speech achieved ruckus applause, and online forums have since been praising the kind, gentle-hearted Jobs, for lowering the iPhone price in order to help bring it to the masses despite the higher monthly fees associated with AT&T's 3G network.

yes jus like its $20 per iphone on the family plan now... it will be $30 for every 3G iphone on there

AT&T Data charge for 3G?

Hey guys,

any clue as to what the monthly data charge on top of your AT&T plan will be? I REALLY.. REALLY hope they don't push it more than it already is (20?).. that will be a killer :(

It would in a way go against their "More affordable" idea.. sure.. apple's only responsibility is making the iphone cheaper, but i would hope that they talk to AT&T about at least not making the monthly charge even more.

:apple:

iPhone for the masses indeed

Sure, the $199 is great, but 70+tax a month for a phone/internet device? no thanks. I'm sure there are some who can afford it, but what about the mac enthusiasts who don't make 6 figures? Perhaps that was not their target audience but it does kind of suck. Is there any hope? God willing, AT&T will see the light and allow data plans/voice plans to be paid for separately. I believe that many people who don't need to access the internet 24/7 between home and work would appreciate the power and beauty of the phone, using it as a phone and ipod on the go, accessing the internet at wi-fi spots. I would have been willing to shell out 400 for the 8 gig model if it meant having this payment option. $40 for a voice plan with no data plan? gladly!

common AT&T, lets get it right!

A simple search would find you quite a few threads on this.

The new data plan charge is $30(up from $20) and $45 for business.

Also, text messages are no longer included with the data plan.

Please do a search, this has already been discussed in many threads! The new data cost is $30, and 200 text messages are not included with it.

I am in the same boat as you. I can easily afford it. I have internet at home and at work. Yes, I do want it while I am on the go too, but that doesn't mean I'm going to bend over to get it. This is a bad choice and ATT is a bad partner to have on this one. I can't wait for the day you can buy an iPhone and use it for any service you choose. Then the competition for our business and my 2 year contract will get interesting, until then they price people out of the market based on people's perception of value, NOT what they can actually afford.!!!!!!!

Right ! In simple math, the minimum 2 year contract, the cost of the phone, the minimum service charge per month . . .

$2,000 for 2 years. Expensive!

I'm betting those users who calculate the real cost, not just the the $200 startup price, will be shocked; and many will decline.

They would if the hi speed cable was only 2.8 times faster than dial up and you lost the option of ever getting dial up. See the difference??

2.8 is optimistic. The iPhone is also limited by its CPU speed when it comes to rendering real web pages, rather than just downloading a binary attachment on an e-mail.

Uhh Dave? Yes it will. I have used the 1G iPhone SIM card to 3G tether for almost a year now.

I am sure you called AT&T to verify you were actually using 3G right? Her phone actually showed the 3G icon but it still wasn't using the services. There really is a setting on their end...they have been known to make mistakes but by default it would not be enabled on your account.
