People can complain about AT&T all they want. Do they actually think Verizon would do any better. The Verizon network has never been tested the way AT&T has with the iPhone and iPad. If you want Verizon, then get an Android or Blackberry.

I don't think anyone expected the volume of pre-orders that slammed the service today. No matter how you plan for a flood, it still going to be a disaster. I can't wait to hear what the number of orders actually is and what the opening day sales numbers are going to be. But I'll bet the Android forces are not happy.

It amazes me that apple and Att would not expect a deluge of orders. Every iPhone launch has been insane. (3G slightly less since it wasn't a totally new design). This is like the 2g all over again.

Placed 2 orders on AT&T website, one for each line after about 5 hours of trying. Somehow the order I placed second is already "Processing" and the first one is just "Received."

Has anyone else ordered through the ATT store website successfully (got to the order confirmation page) but have not received a confirmation email?

I placed my order this morning (around 10:00 CST) but have not gotten any kind of confirmation email. When I try to check my order status on ATT's website, it says it does not recognize the order number (possibly due to the fact that it states orders within the last 24 hours may not be available). But I thought I at least should have received a confirmation email by now.

I ordered two at about 3pm edt from the att website and got an immediate confirmation

I don't know. It's been AT&T's servers every year that cause this mess. For the 3G launch they couldn't even activate the phones and just sent people home with unactivated phones telling them to connect to iTunes and it will be activated eventually.

That was Apple's activation servers. Not AT&T's. That was well established two years ago.

As long as you realize its just "reserved". When you get there on the 24th, you'll be one of hundreds in line waiting for their "reserved" phone. Meanwhile, the store only got 50-100 phones in shipment. So you'll be SOL. Should have just went to att.com and ordered it and had it shipped to your house. You'll be assured of getting one then. As they ship those out first then ship remaining stock to at&t stores.

I was able to place my order on att.com in about 5 mins.

Why do people not understand the "reserved" concept. In the email it says that the phone will be reserved for the entire day of the 24th. If you do not pick it up on the 24th then it is gone. So no it is not "pre-ordered" because no transaction has taken place. But there will be a phone if you go on the 24th.

just spent 2.5 hours on AT&T's site and on the phone with reps only to be told by the last rep whom I asked for a supervisor to get to told me that no matter what anyone has told me they will not do pre-orders on the phone regardless if you are adding a line to an existing account or not. I told him that 4 of the previous reps I talked to were clear that it was possible but other issues like call dropping (ironic huh), wait for portage of a number, and one even assuring me that the online process was up and running and I shouldn't have a problem.

Either way I have finally been able to pre-order by adding a line to an existing account but wasn't able to port my number until I call in to the porting division after I activate my new iphone 4.

just have to make one more call to have both lines on our AT&T account combined into a family plan that wasn't possible on the site currently.... what a nightmare.

I have been waiting since the original iphone to order one and I finally took the plunge. Now I can finally retire my moto flip phone V710... finally a real camera, real internet, email, and no ridiculous antenna to pull up like I from the 90's.

These guys should at least pull the sites down until they have this problem fixed. It's a joke they leave the sites active, forcing people to try over and over again to no avail.

true

but its also a joke that anyone would keep trying all day instead of waiting a few days.

No, there won't. There may be a phone, but it's all first-come-first-serve. The AT&T website is saying even pre-orders are that way now, and that's after they've charged your credit card, something reservations don't do.

Completed AT&T Order without e-mail

Has anyone else ordered through the ATT store website successfully (got to the order confirmation page) but have not received a confirmation email?
.

It took about six hours of off-and-on trying, but yes, I did get to the Order Completion page and got an order number. And no, there's been no e-mail confirmation. Given the state of AT&T's web site, I don't find this very surprising. I figure I'll check in in a day or two and see if the order is still there. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Wouldn't that would make the matter worse?

If a million people want to order, and the system can only process 100,000 per hour, shutting down will only push the bottleneck further down the line and pile up bigger backlogs.

Apple has such a creative bunch of fans!

so i reserved an Iphone through iphone app. I clicked the $199 iphone. i picked the store and etc... anyways it went through and got a confirmation email. look carefully it says that i ordered the $599 non contract iphone????? that was not even an option. can someone tell me whats going on can i just go there on the 24th and tell them Im buying a plan and pay the subsidized price????

Got the same thing. This is an automated email based on the part number you ordered listing the retail price. They didn't put a link between the email system and the pricing you are eligible for. I received this same email for both my phones and a friend got the same email (who is a new AT&T customer)

Around 1:30 pm Eastern, after starting a little after 4:00 am, I gave up on both websites and drove 30 minutes to an ATT store. They had a sign in sheet just inside the front doors. There was 1 person ahead of me. After about 15 minutes, someone took down my full name, cell number, asked 16 gig or 32 gig and asked to see my drivers license. After another 5 minutes, one of the people at a terminal called my name. He asked the same questions you see online. After about another 15 minutes my order was completed and they will be shipping it to my house. They were still telling people this would happen, as would the in store pickups, on 6/24. All in all, a painless process and the people in the store were cheerful and helpful even though they spent the morning writing this information down on sheets of paper because their systems were down. In the late morning, the systems came back up and they entered all the handwritten information and sent the people emails. They said the systems were very slow in the morning and they suffered through the situations when they'd get a failure after entering all the information. Although, they didn't have any issues when entering my order.

It's patheticthatsthis is the forth time it's happened. I also find it kinda funny how many people find I necessary to upgrade to a new iPhone each year. Long lines and so many people alling just to get another toy to replace their 12 month old toy?

Yes. I ordered 2 today under my family plan and got confirmations within seconds. I am trying to place the 3rd and last one now and it hasn't worked for over 3 hours.

Went to an AT&T store, and was in-n-out within 10 minutes. On my way home I stopped by the Apple store to check on the reservation I made via iPhone App while standing in line @ AT&T, where I was told that even though I have a "reservation", I would still have to come wait in line with everyone else on the 24th, so basically the iPhone App reservation means nothing...

According to Engadget, that's exactly what they've done, removing the option to pre-order entirely and instead giving launch day store hours. I just went to store.apple.com and sure enough, no more pre-order buttons.
