Next silly question if decided to order the two radeon 3870's

Just added ram and a harddrive to the Mac Pro and didnt notice an additional PCI power connector other than the one going into the 8800

If I get two 3870's is another tucked in somewhere or a connector to plug in with a cable that comes with the cards

Also if going that route while in OS X with dual monitors should I hook one monitor up to each or still both to one ( I realize Xfire wont be active in OS X so not expecting that just curious as to in OS X if theres a better way to hook up dual monitors when you have more than one card or if it even matters )

Thanks for advice so far folks - really love the rig already and doubt I'll ever run another PC in the house (Fusion for work needs if needed and boot camp for games occasionallyare all I need for that )

There are 2 power plugs right next to each other on my Mac Pro

I just received my 3870 from OWC. These are the two plugs. This is an '06 Mac Pro. The plugs may be in a different place on '07-'08 models.

MY 2008 model has two plugs in the same place just like that.

BTW good to see OWC orders are shipping :)

Crossfire has dual monitor support unlike SLI. You should hook up the monitors to one card.

Hard drives and memory do not use the PCI power lanes, they also have dedicated power sources that do not interfere with the PCI slots.

OWC is shipping these cards !

I was very pissed off earlier this week when ATI was shipping and OWC wasn't. In fact, OWC kept increasing their ship time.

I got online and tried to initiate a chat with OWC. No one was there to answer, so I left the chat message.

I explained that I was going to cancel my order and buy direct from ATI if they did not have any to ship.

By the end of that day, this Tuesday, I received an e-mail with tracking number.

So... they have some in stock. How they determine priority, I do not know. Best thing to do is tell them you want to cancel your pre-order. That should get their attention. It seems that it worked for me :)

She is installed now. Been in about 30 minutes. Running just fine. Cake install.

I have not put any load on it... but so far I cannot tell that the fan is even running (even though it is). It is as quite as the 7300 GT (no fan) that it replaced.

Now, a few pics....

And yes, the chick on the box is HOT ;)

Now I guess I need to research a bit and maybe some folks here can advise who game on the PC side also about how picky Crossfire is about improving games

As in does it require a true profile and support officially for X game ? Example Age of Conan didnt have a profile or officially support sli but going to sli in it took my framerates up a good 20 immediately at high res -

Will be playing that and Warhammer beta and launch (in beta now ) and wondering mainly for those games if crossfire helps/works at all as if not then the 8800gt would be better

Will be doing Spore/SC2/D3 and so on on Mac side anyway -

So anyone with experience on PC side much know about overall issues/picky side of crossfire ?

Thanks a lot for those links - looks like overall at 1920 two 3870's beat the 8800 in most pc games ,

Now the question of would I get it faster from OWC or AMD as far as ordering goes

I find it somewhat stupid that the fan is placed like this, blowing hot air INTO the computer case and not to the outside...

Thx.
Too bad barefeats are a bunch of noobs so very hard to to find this review non biased.
Take a look at the text at the bottom of the test:

As for OpenGL 3D performance, we'd love to benchmark Maya and other pro 3D apps. But until we can convince AutoDesk to give us a copy, we'll continue to test and report on 3D Games (which use many of the same 3D dynamics) to infer pro 3D app peformance. Take a look at our Mac 3D Game results of the Radeon HD 3870.

How come site that does testing does not know to use Maxons OpenGL/Rendering benchmarking tool called CINEBENCH R10???
I'll wait for some more reliable source.

Thx for the links tho. Appreciate it.

Pulled the trigger and ordered two from OWC - will be using 8800 till they get here - will let you guys know how they seem in AoC and WAR and things like that if interested, at 1920

Cinebench is a reliable CPU benchmark, but for testing the performance of the graphics card it's not very accurate in my opinion. The OpenGL results are often very strange and far away from reality

The benchmarks are not too impressive vs a 1900XT on a first gen mac pro.

I guess I will wait for the 4870 when it makes its way. Plus blowing air inside the case seems counter productive.

I'd love to get excited about these cards but not when there are 4850s and 4870s about.

indeed

who would buy a 3870 when the 3870x2 and the 4870 is out...

btw..the 4850 is much faster than the 3870 and costs only $200 retail..

If you could send me a link for a where to order a 4870 that is made for the Mac I'd appreciate it
