My AT&T debacle;

Got through the Apple site by 12:04 am but was told AT&T required a deposit to add a line (16 year customer with zero missed bills).
Tried to get through to AT&T site from 12:05 - 1:37
Got an iPhone pre-ordered at 1:39 with a guarantee that I would receive it on the 21st.
Never saw an email or any sort of confirmation.
Call #1: Friday morning I call AT&T, they let me know my order is pending due to needing a credit authorization.
I pass the credit authorization, the lady tells me I am good and I should receive an email shortly.
I then receive an email saying something went wrong, and I should call immediately.
Call #2: I speak with a gentleman who tells me the first girl got it wrong, and that he was finishing up the order and that I should receive an email in the next 2-4 hours.
Immediately after I hang up the phone, I get a new email telling my my credit card could not be authorized. I then check my bank website and, sure enough i HAD been charged (~250). So I call back.
Call #3: This person tells me that they have no record of me being charged, and that all she could do was escalate the call.
I go to sleep on Friday.
When I wake up Saturday, my credit card had been charged a second time, and my first order replaced, or should i say amended, to include a second iPhone order placed on the 15TH. So I wait for the supervisor who was supposed to call me to call, and realize that at this point I am probably pretty screwed.
Call #4: She calls, lets me know that she cant figure out what was going on and that she would need to escalate this further. I say okay. This was Saturday morning at 8:00 am.
By Sunday afternoon I still hadn't heard from anyone. So I call back. The first person I talk to tells me that the supervisor was able to work everything out, that I would be refunded by Monday when the bank opens, and that I would receive my i5 day one. Cool.
Monday goes by, no money. Tuesday morning, no money. So I check my order status once again to find that the original order (from the 14th) was deleted, and the second order (from the 15th) was the only one left. However, I had still not seen any money from the first one. Still having not heard back from the original supervisor, I call back.
Now, at AT&T, no matter how big an issue, they will not give you a single person to deal with. You have to talk with a new person every time, pass security every time, and reexplain your story, every time. Its beyond obnoxious. They are constantly trying to get you off the phone, and will only do what they can to take your money, and screw you as hard as possible.
Anyway, I call again, this time telling the girl that she needs to cancel everything and refund me all 436 dollars that AT&T owes me before I hang up the phone. She quickly cancelled my order, and I received an email that the order had been cancelled. HOWEVER, nothing in her system showed the original charge, and she only supposedly canceled one of the orders and does not have the other 200 to give me. I am now waiting once again for a supervisor to call. AT&T is lucky I am doing better in life now, or that missing money would be absolutely detrimental to my financial situation. Luckily, I will be able to go to an Apple store and buy an i5 on Friday. I'm guessing that it wont be impossible to find one in an Apple Store. If it is, oh well, Ill get it before the 3 weeks that AT&T was trying to make me wait.

What a bunch of **********.

edit: I was only refunded the 200 extra charge. original charge still pending

I hear ya. Ordered 2 iPhones from Apple 10 minutes after launch. The first order got canceled by AT&T (reason they say was a system glitch) while my second iphone will be here on Friday. I called AT&T to get to the bottom of things and while on the phone asked for them to reorder my iphone, thinking that since I'm making a senior rep do the order that nothing could go wrong. Joke's on me! My order still doesn't show up on the website.

But would ATT, VZW, Sprint, have kept the "Delivers on 9/21" up on their site many hours after Apple sold out of launch day delivery stock. That's what enticed me and probably a lot of other "late comers" to order from ATT, VZW, Sprint, direct. My preference would have been to order from Apple; going to ATT was my backup, and I don't think I was alone.

I also don't think Apple is holding back anything. The carriers knew their allocation well before last Friday, and I'm sure that is the stock they advertised as "delivers on 9/21." Once that was gone is when they went to "14-21 days."

Well if that is the case then the people like me that we're told they would receive there phone on/around 9/21 are good and we shouldnt be worrying about this back order number and order date.

No longer backordered!!!!!

Just got an email from AT&T:

Seems to have coincided with my backorder qty going to ZERO!!!!! :)

Still no tracking number :(

What lesson has everyone learned?

Never pre-order an iPhone from AT&T, ever. They're not in the business of supply chain management which means they're pretty poor at it. Mix in AT&T customer service and you have a recipe for disaster.

If you can't get it through Apple, wait in line at the Apple store. Or wait the extra couple weeks for Apple to deliver it. Don't bother going to an AT&T store on launch day. It will be slow and painful. You'll wish you just waited in line at Apple.

AT&T iPhone pre-orders are notorious for double billing, missing shipments, holding upgrades hostage, screwing business accounts, and general confusion. I'm surprised Apple still allows AT&T any role other than being a cell provider.

Why don't we wait until Friday before making such statements, huh chief?

My order seems to be going smooth as silk so far.....

My backorder quantity changed from "1" to " 0" today

Date Ordered: 09/14/2012 (ordered about 25 minutes after pre order launch time on regular AT&T website, not premier)

Apple PHO IPHONE 5 64GB BLK PHONE
status: In Progress

1 quantity ordered
0 quantity shipped
0 quantity backordered

tracking: Pending Shipment

I had to do it. I called and asked for the status. I ordered mine by phone Friday around 10:00 ish CST. Did anyone else order through a rep? I had a scheduled call from them to order mine. When he called, I was advised that there system was down all morning and only some Internet orders were going through. As we were getting ready to hang up the system came back online and the order was processed. My order status is still pending.

What gets me aggravated is the AT&T reps who obviously have no clue what's going on. The guy I just hung up with tolld me that the phone comes out Friday and then AT&T will start shipping out 5-7 business days later so I should expect it I. 14-21 days.

I think the same thing happened with the iPhone 4 preorders if Im not mistaken.

well it depends. my case, i ordered on at&t after getting a 2-3 weeks slip in delivery on apple.com at 2:45am cst.

if someone is desperate as everyone here, they would do the extreme. right? :D

try reading this thread to understand why at&t is having delays.

and i don't think they charge us twice. i'm sure you mean that you see two charges in your card. that's normal. it's a way to find out if you have an available balance to purchase an item, this is normal for expensive items like computers and stuff. but you won't see "double" charges in small items. and eventually, one will disappear, so don't worry. :)

take it easy. you should cut down a cup of coffee a day. you might get a heart attack before your phone arrives. :)

They really should have pushed pre orders back further to give more time to push more stock out of the factories. Pre orders 2 days after announcement was a little pre mature IMO.

Within the past 5 minutes (yes, I have been checking every 5 minutes. :p), my order just went from Backordered 1 to Backordered 0! I ordered a Black 32GB iPhone 5 at about 9:40-9:50 AM through Premier.

What is your order date listed as on the order status page? (wireless.att.com/order_status)

I was told by an AT&T CSR that the cutoff for the 21st was 12:00pm EST

i wouldn't go with the at&t script BS. i ordered mine a little over the cut off time, and one of my orders got off backorder from 1 to 0.

best thing to do is wait till tomorrow night since most phones will ship on thursday anyways. :)

Couldn't agree more!

As does mine. I ordered just before 3:00 AM Eastern (right when it went live) and got two confirmation emails immediately. The following day I got a text message, and yesterday I had to confirm my CSS email. Funds are pending from AmEx, and I know I will be getting my phone of Friday as I've gone through this for three years now and have never had a problem. My quantity was never back ordered either, seeing as I got the order in right when they went up.

did AT&T give this cut off time or did someone "overhear it" =thru the grapevine? in other words is that truly a legitimate source?

I thought I read a statement by an ATT official here somewhere. It wasn't from a CSR & was based on the time when ATT updated it's site from "delivers 9/21" to "14-21 days." But I don't think it's a hard guarantee either as the "delivers 9/21" never was -- there's a huge disclaimer on the order page.

I believe it was then further reported by BGR and engadget

My iPhone (Black 32GB) has an order date of 9/14. Both of the other two iPhones I also ordered have order dates of 9/15, though, and one of them (white 32GB) lost it's backorder, but the other (black 32GB) still has it.

Strange thing is, I ordered my iPhone last, yet it has an order date of 9/14.

Correct. No need to worry just yet. Still another full day and looks like backorders are getting filled pretty fast now. Mine was filled not too long ago.
