True, but if you are already a light weight user, you are going to keep it that way.
Not necessarily, as a light weight user today with the iPhone 3G, might be a heavy user tomorrow due to the iPhone 4 and faster network speeds.

You better have a wifi hotspot to use nearby, or this phone will begin to cost you. ATT has figured this out. If you look at data consumption over the past iterations of the iPhone, you begin to see that with each new generation of iPhone, data usage has been increasing. Why? Well, the app store is now creating more interesting and useful apps, which as a side effect, eats more data. This trend will probably continue.

With each new iPhone, new hardware is incorporated that caused more data to be needed. This is cycling up, not down.

I am old enough to remember Bill Gates saying that there was no way anyone would need more than a 100 mb computer, and look what happened.

ATT is betting on the information curve increasing.

he has a point. there reallly should be a text plan between 200 and 1500. and if people are paying $45 for 2gb of data for tethering that is a huge ripoff. I often run through a gig of data in a day if I'm watching a lot of hulu.

maybe on att just browsing websites. but like I said above I can easily burn a gig of verizon data streaming hulu for 4 hours.

people are getting all mad about this, the real rip off is text this service should be free. a simple text message uses very very little network resources unless its a pic or video.

What part of if your unlimited now ($30/month), that you can STILL get unlimited with the new phone do people NOT understand......

ATT was already ripping us off with their data plans, but at least we could use all the data we wanted. But they put these stupid 200mb and 2gb limits on us WTF!
Whats the point of an iphone if you use under 200mb. And they make it seem like 2gb might be enough, but you know this new iphone will use more data than the 3gs.

While I'm here Im ganna say there txt services are retarded too.
Either 200 and 1500 thx :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

THEN GO SOME WHERE ELSE!

No one else will have it and it do not see the new data plan as unfair. I think everyone should pay for what they use!

We can't get the $30 unlimited (which really is limited at 5GB), with a new contract.

I agree 100% and the reason I use Textfree Unlimited, it's a free app that lets me text for free. I will be canceling my AT&T texting option.

True, if you didn't already have a data plan, then the unlimited plan is no longer an option. Such is life. Tell me, did you complain this much when McDonalds stopped selling the McRib?:p Just because a company offers a product or service doesn't mean that they have to continue to offer it for all of eternity.

I like the iPhone and don't want another cell phone, but I was forced into having AT&T as my network provider. Believe me, if another carrier gets the iPhone I will leave AT&T in a heartbeat.

I understand completely, but those are the choices we all have to make.

But if you have an iPhone already, you can still keep the plan you have.

My biggest thing is everyone wants to use 3G. Yeah great, but like where do you all live because I know where I do, I can't walk down the block without hitting about 20 wifi spots. You can't use one of those spots, I can't understand that.

I checked my usage today . I'm on my phone all the time but aside from YouTube and misc. in app purchases, most of my network based apps are lightweight in their usage. If I'm looking at it correctly, I've used 3 gigs in the past year. I'm generally against caps of any type because at first it was a mental block from me doing all sorts of wild and crazy things, but as time went on, I realized my usage was way below the cap and in no way different from my before cap usage. Again, not saying caps are good , but ATT capping at 2 GB won't make your webpages and iTunes purchases any larger.

blah blah blah. Aren't there a bunch of threads on this already? i suspect your goal is not to complain about AT&T but just to rake some muck.

The point is, if I want to upgrade to the iPhone 4 then no, I can't keep the plan I have. I would have to sign a new contract.

My major concern about this though is that we are going backwards like the early days with AOL and getting only so many hours for a set fee. Pretty soon my cable internet provider is going to start charging me based on data use, like AT&T is doing.

Well at least someone is screwing me.

You realize you posted this on a forum full of tech nerds right?

restraining orders all around ftw! By the time you read this im sure your pm box will be plenty full heh.

On topic now,

My wife caught me off gaurd when I asked her if she was going to upgrade to an iphone. Her responce was no because she didnt have the data plan for her current phone and wasnt going to get one if she couldnt get the unlimited. It toally blew my mind that she had even done homework on it lol.
But I am pretty sure she would be better off with the $15 plan because she wouldnt use that much anyway.

If you already have the unlimited plan why are you whining, if not then im sorry it didnt work out for ya man. But honestly, you had time to fix the problem. I take a look at this forum briefly once a day if that and learned of it well before the cut off date.

Im sure it was splattered on every other forum and site that deals with things like this.

in closing...

neener neener, I have unlimited and you dont:p sorry had to do it heh

I have to say that the price of the data plan was the one thing holding me back from an iPhone. I would ideally like no data plan at all. I know everyone says "Just get an iPod touch," but to me the extra functions (web browsing, calender, email, etc) are really just a bonus for me and do not warrant me carrying around an extra device... So for me, 200mb of data should be fine for grabbing directions, email, etc while on the go - and while I could have afforded the $30/mo for unlimited data, I would have never used much more vs. saving myself $15/mo or $180/year.

This is a stab in the dark, but I might venture a guess as to say the OP doesn't pay his iPhone bill every month or maybe not all his living expenses...

My wife and I each use less than 50 MBs of 3G data/month and get great use of our iPhones. We just don't stream tons of audio and video. I'm switching us to the $15 plan and using the savings to pay for the 3G plan on my iPad. :)
