First of all, if you already have a data plan, you can keep it at the $30 unlimited level if you want to.

My wife hasn't gone over 150MB in the past six months. She uses it mainly to check her email and some light web surfing. So for us, we can cut the cost of her data plan in half. I like it.

AMEN!

Too many on this board bitch and moan no matter what At&t does.

Crap, they could send everybody a $100 cash for being a customer and people would still complain...

See how AT&T gives a little, then takes a lot. If Apple would just drastically reduce the price of an unlocked phone, then I could buy it and use another carrier, freeing myself from them.

I understand why Apple went with AT&T with the initial release of the iPhone, just wish they would part ways. I am sure Apple feels the same, especially every time they announce new features ultimately not supported by AT&T. Features that other carriers have allowed for some time.

people are getting all mad about this, the real rip off is text this service should be free. a simple text message uses very very little network resources unless its a pic or video.

I agree 100% and the reason I use Textfree Unlimited, it's a free app that lets me text for free. I will be canceling my AT&T texting option.

I also agree and wouldn't pay for a text plan at all ..... But I need my Banking, Credit Card, and Etrade text alerts. ;)

So why not simply update your contact information with those institutions and give them your TextFree number in lieu of your cell number? If they actually try to call that number it will show up under TextFree as a missed call.

All the major carriers are about the same. At the end of the day, there is very little difference in your final monthly total. I know, I have lines with the top three. I have no complaints. It's the price one pays for smartphone service. The grass is not always greener with a different carrier than the one you use now.

You people better get online with your AT&T account and see wha you actually use in a month (not just current billing cycle). I have a work Blackberry (which saves bandwith), average use of the phone, no web surfing- and I used 1.6 GB last month.
I switched my personal line to Sprint Friday (for the 4G EVO) and have unlimited data and voice calls on ANY cell network for less $!

Verizon will likely get the iPhone soon, that's why AT&T is extending contracts early and jacking up termination fees. Then Verizon will run out of bandwidth like AT&T. I'm thinking Sprint may be the way to go!

I find it rather odd that people are so anti AT&T. I've used their service for eight years. The same amount of time I've been with Verizon. Actually Verizon was the first to increase the ETA fee by a very significant amount. Thus they set the precedence. AT&T simply followed Verizons lead because they could. Nothing against Sprint (I used to use them) but they do have cheaper plans because they are desperate for business. They've been experienced a mass exodus of subscribers due to the precarious financial position they are in. Additionally they've had a lot of network issues in many (not all) of their coverage areas, which has caused the most damage to their reputation and overall profit. Let's face it, when's the last time Steve Jobs was the spokesperson in an Apple TV add, offering huge discounts and telling us how great their company is? _Never_
Sprints CEO is not only making TV commercials, he's scrambling like crazy to keep them afloat.

My data chart is all over. 4 of the 6 months I am around 200mb. The other 2 months I was at 2gb, lol.

First off i strongly dislike the caps and i know 2GB would not be enough for me, but you can't argue with the fact that 98% of their customers don't use more than 2GB. With that being said, you should have been smart and circumvent the whole thing like i did. I simply bought a 3GS 2 days before the cap went into effect then return it with their 30 day return policy. Now i can buy the new iPhone w/o losing my unlimited data because i made sure they didn't touch the contract/data plan. You could have done the same, so you really should of thought about this ahead of time.

They really should have went with a three-tier data plan.

$10 = 200MB

$20 = 1GB

$30 = 5GB

Because they did not, they are a greedy corporation.

*I use between 1.3GB and 2.6GB per month.

Ok, here is the official word, doubting Thomas.
The way I read that is if I wanted to change my current data plan, I could without having to sign another 2 year contract. It says nothing about upgrading to a new iPhone and being able to keep my old data plan. A new phone would also require a new 2 year contract and thus the new data plan. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see anything from AT&T saying otherwise.

I know you won't believe this either, but have a look anyway.:p

OK, so you sign up for the $25 2GB plan. The months you go to 2.6GB, you will be charged an extra $10 for a 3GB limit. If you do that less than half the time, AT&T is saving you money.

A lot of this "greedy" stuff reminds me of something our publisher tells people. They call in angry and scream, "You're just trying to sell newspapers!" He replies, "Yes, we are."

AT&T isn't doing this out of charity. If people throttling the network with huge data usage are killing AT&T competitively, the company will do something. It's SAVING most people money. If you don't like it, go to Sprint.

I love how some people come on here and say "when I stream hulu or Pandora for hours a day, it's going to use a lot of data!" Well no ****, Sherlock.

YOU are the reason AT&T has gone this route. People like this think that because they were granted unlimited data use, that they SHOULD use as much data as they can possibly cram into every month (I mean, they are paying for it, right?).

The problem however is that no network is going to be able to handle thousands of people streaming media all the time. It's the reason that I could barely even use my phone when I was in Chicago and New York. In San Francisco, my aircard wouldn't even work. Bandwidth on their end is not unlimited, people. It DOES run out. You want them to increase it...at no cost to you, of course.

I especially love the comment above how "people in the know" use every feature on their phone to the fullest of its abilities. It's like you feel that you MUST use every feature as much as possible, or you just aren't getting your money's worth. Guess what...I'm "in the know". I know all the features of my phone. I still use under 200MB a month, and only pull it out when I need to use it for something. I don't just pull it out because it's there and have some underlying need to justify its existence.

The VAST majority of people, even active people, do not generally use gigabytes of data every month. It's the very few who strain every last megabyte out of their data plan who chew up the most data. Those people SHOULD be charged more, as they are the ones using the most bandwidth. You don't like it. Tough luck. Stop thinking that you own the freakin' network. No one is screwing you if you are using the most of the service while others are not.

And where the hell does the person live who said they can't walk down the block without seeing 20 open wifi signals? I can almost NEVER find a free, unlocked wifi signal. I travel for work quite a bit, and try it everywhere I go to no avail. You must live somewhere very special.

Data could be free and you'd still have some jerkoff here saying he should be paid to use data.

I got my iPad 3G pre-ordered and started off with unlimited data. I then switched to 250mb to test it but decided to go back today to unlimited. Now I don't have the option for the unlimited for $30.

I thought existing accts get to keep using unlimited?

Once you switch to the newer data plans, you can't go back to the unlimited. They also said that.

Yeah it definitely sucks for new AT&T customers with the smaller data cap. I can see how the new $15 plan may be a win for customers who don't use a lot of data, but lowering the unlimited plan to 2GB seems a little cheap, especially considering tethering will now be available.

Considering AT&T claims their Data plan is "unlimited", when it really has a 5GB cap, I tend not to believe anything AT&T says. They are certainly not trying to save us money.

True most of us won't go over the 2GB limit but when you do, then it will cost you more money than what we had previously paid. I personally hate plans with limits, I always worry that I will go over. I use the Slingbox app on 3G all the time and when the Netflix app is released, I know I will easily go over the new plans 2GB limit. For that reason I am keeping my "unlimited" (5GB limit) data plan. I can save the $5 difference by canceling AT&T's texting service and using the free app, Textfree Unlimited.

Dear "Bandwith Cops", "AT&T huggers": if you are so concious about web data usage, please stop wasting MacRumors online capacity with none sense posts. Act as role models and let us be using our paid data services as we desire. And if you still think that we are the reason why you don't have good service from AT&T, well let me tell you that you are a vivid example of the tilte of this thread: AT&T sold you a service that they simply cannot fullfill.
Live and let live!

5GB cap only applies to tethering plans. There is no such thing as a 5GB cap on the unlimited iPhone data plan.
