Mine says I can buy at full retail, I am eligible for an upgrade on 5/8/13.

Honestly I am heavily considering paying the ETF and going to Verizon. VZW has better 4G in my area, plus I would save some money each month, plus I wouldn't be giving my money to ATT. I'm kind of upset about this shared data/face time issue, because I only own one ATT device and a shared plan makes no sense.

Mine says the full upgrade is available on May 7th next year, so I'll be paying the extra $250 to early upgrade. I preordered my iPhone 4S last year, and now it looks like it'll become a tradition :D I wonder if I could call them and convince them to waive the upgrade fee since we've been with them since 2005 and pay $200 a month on our bill, probably not though :p

For the 100th time. AT&T (Verizon and Sprint) all got rid of 12 month upgrades.

And AT&T isn't doing full subsidy iPhone $199 upgrades earlier than 18-20 months. No exceptions.

Early $250 iPhone upgrades are available after 6 months from last upgrade. That's $250 plus $199 plus $36 activation fee. That's $486 for "early upgrade" 16Gb iPhone pricing.

I bought my 4S at launch and this is the text I got from AT&T:

As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $36 upgrade fee.

This is for the primary line of a family plan, though.

Nice

I have primary line of family and bought at launch
but it still says I need to pay an extra $250 :/

correct.

no when it says "you're eligible for a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount". means you're for a discounted price..

But when it says ""Great news! You qualify for an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-year commitment." that means you get full discount for an iphone only....

2 totally different things..

Incorrect. They can get an iPhone at the early upgrade price only. Any other phone they will have to pay full retail. S/he will be able to get a full upgrade for the $199-399 price in May 2013. I've done an early upgrade every year. All you do is save 200 dollars.

I'm giving AT&T the benefit of waiting for the actual iPhone release to give me a chance to upgrade early at the fully subsidized price. If I don't get it I'm going to switch to Verizon. If I have to wait 20 months to upgrade I might as well get a good connection. I've counted on AT&T giving me the early upgrade to buy my loyalty for bad connections. AT&T has done right by me before I'm hoping they come through again.

Call up, ask how you go about disconnecting your service and paying your ETF.
Let them know that your not happy with the service etc. Remember Do NOT ask for an upgrade anywhere in the conversation. Let them explain the procedure etc. Chances are they will put you onto a supervisor. Again do not ask for an early upgrade tell your story to the Sprvsr, drag it out wait for them to offer the early upgrade to you.
Think about what you are going to say before you call.Be prepared to let them know about connection problems, service etc.

Have patience the reward is worth it.

I am currently being offered an upgrade at full retail price :D, but next month will be the 6 month mark into contract. Could they possibly push mine up for an early upgrade?

They say that for all the lines whether you get the full discount or partial discount so it's meaningless. You need to log onto at&t and look for the specific date when you're eligible to upgrade for the fully subsidized $199/299/399 price.

I honestly dont think they will offer early upgrade, the 4s was released only 9 months which is only half of the time the usually offer early upgrades. I think they have enough people with 3, 3g and the iphone 4 to upgrade to make big sale numbers.

They'll definitely move the dates up for those who got 4S's on launch day. They always do.

They USED TO do that. They aren't going to do that this year. That is WHY they introduced "early upgrades" last year.

Early upgrade is ($199+$250).

I don't know your upgrade situation, but if I were you, I would not count on AT&T moving your date up.

this. They are supposedly going to stop doing the $199 only upgrades unless you truly completed the 2 year contract.

Called AT&T today as mine says. Eligible on 5/8/2013 they told me they can offer me an early upgrade with any phone but they cannot offer an early upgrade with the iPhone because of their contract with Apple. I have been a customer since October 1997 which is almost for 15 years. I have always been eligible for an upgrade on my line in 12 months. This is the first time they moved it to 18 months. As I too got my iPhone for 4s on launch day.

I talked to customer retention and they cannot move the date they said it is set by their contract with Apple. What I did get was free texting for $20 per month for eight months. Which is $160 value. They gave me that to help offset the cost of the $250 upgrade fee i will have to pay if the phone comes out in September. I am still hoping that come September they move up my upgrade date but you never know with ATT. At least I have a reliable source who will purchase my iPhone for 4s so I won't be out too much money considering i am getting the texting free for 8 months.

I'm curious how you're going to save going to Verizon as they've eliminated the individual plans, meaning you HAVE to get one of their shared plans. Looking at the pricing of shared plans on AT&T and Verizon shows very little difference is the pricing if at all, depending on the number of devices and allotment of data.

this. They are supposedly going to stop doing the $199 only upgrades unless you truly completed the 2 year contract.

By the time the new iPhone comes out, I will have 3 months left on my contract, so it'll be cheaper for me to pay the ETF and switch rather than pay the $250 early upgrade fee. You think they would bump it up 3 months?

With ATT I have an unlimited plan. It's throttled (more or less capped) at 3GB, I can't tether, and I won't be able to use facetime on cellular. If I switched to a plan that let me do all that, vs the VZW alternative, I'd save money with VZW. Plus their 4G is better in my area, and I believe (I'd have to check) that their discount through my job is higher than ATT. Even paying an ETF would get me in cheaper with a new iPhone vs paying full price for an out of contract upgrade with ATT this year. This situation applies to me, it's not a blueprint as to how everyone can save money.

I called the number and I got a text that says:

"As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $36 upgrade fee."

Does that mean I would avoid the $250 early upgrade cost? I got my first smartphone in January 2011 with AT&T and I always thought you were eligible for an upgrade every 1.5 years.

Sounds like you should be good!

Again, the statement "As a valued AT&T customer, you may qualify for a discount with a new two-year commitment" is meaningless and doesn't really tell you your upgrade options. You need to go to the at&t website and click on upgrade eligibility to view your options.

Your options may be either:

1) You're eligible for a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year service commitment. You may qualify for a full discount on an iPhone upgrade on XX/XX/XXXX (future date).

or

2) You're eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price (meaning the full discount).

In the past, it used to be that the primary line was eligible for an upgrade at the full discount every 12 months provided that your monthly bill was at least $100 for that line (easy to accomplish with family plans). Now, they've eliminated that and everybody has to wait the full 18 months (unless at&t does a last minute change on or before September 12th).

Full upgrade available: October 04, 2012" ImageImageImageImageImage

About month ago is was ""As a valued AT&T customer, you're eligible for a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount". Anyone else just got moved up?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure those two messages are the same. You're basically going to pay to $449/549/649 pricing.

I think instead of checking upgrade statuses with these ridiculous messages, everyone should just try to buy an IPhone 4S online. The price you see will most likely be the price to pay when the next iPhone comes out.
