That's good to hear. Not too many people with both iPhone and 3G iPad though.

You are more than likely correct. But, we may run in different circles or work in different arenas, but most of my friends and my former workmates who own an iPhone of some age also have an iPad. In fact, my best friend in Houston has a wife, 3 children, a nanny and housekeeper. The husband, wife, nanny and housekeeper all have an iPhone, iPad and a MacBook Air and the children, except for the youngest who has no iPhone, each has an iPad, MacBook Air and an iPhone AND all three children also have iPads provided by their school.

Don't even begin to ask the total cost of the purchase. I was with them when they purchased all this equipment--all at the same time. It took over 3 hours to go from store ingress to egress and received a 10 percent discount for the purchase.

Yes, but only to save the $250 upgrade fee.

I'll probably switch to Verizon, I can pay my AT&T ETF and buy a fully subsidized iPhone 5 from Verizon cheaper than if I was to stay on AT&T and do an early upgrade.

AT&T ETF: $215
Verizon 16GB iPhone 5: $199
Total cost to switch: $414

AT&T 16GB iPhone 5 full price: $649

I save: $235

I have a question. I just switched to AT&T about two months ago. I of course picked up two iPhone 4s. Is there anyway that a customer service rep would have mercy on me and give me an early iPhone upgrade? Right now I qualify for no upgrades at all and would have to pay full price.

Do I really have to wait four more months to qualify for an early upgrade like I have read? Just curious if anyone knows before I call them or if anyone has advice.

Is it possible to pay the ETF with AT&T and then buy a subsidized iPhone 5 from AT&T afterwards? It would end up costing you the same as moving to Verizon (unless you have a preference for Verizon).

In either case, while you are saving $235 now, you're locking yourself into another two-year contract and the possibility of paying another ETF down the road.

You have to wait 90 days before you can re-open an account with AT&T after paying them an ETF. I'm definitely not going to wait that long to get a new phone.

Also, Verizon has a stronger LTE footprint and better voice coverage. So I'm willing to give them a shot for the first time as a new customer. To top it off, Verizon lets you use your data as you paid for it, however you want! I can FaceTime, use Personal Hotspot, and share my data with any devices I please! AT&T needs to wake up!

Basicly your screwed.

You won't qualify in 4 months either..

I got the 4S on launch day and I'm still not eligible..

Thanks for the answer. A customer rep told me everybody is eligible after six months from your upgrade a while back as long as your bill is paid and it would only be an early upgrade, not a full one, that's why I said four months. Reps, I swear... They know nothing. That's why I asked here first.

Thanks.

You can do better. Take out another line for $199. Do a device swap to transfer the iPhone 5 to your line and put the new line on a dumbphone to the tune of $120 a year ($10 a month).

AT&T 16GB iPhone: $199
Dumbphone on the new line: $120

You save: $330

That way you'll be upgrade eligible every single year as you'll do the device swap every other year. It's just $120 extra per year to keep a dumbphone and you can sell the old iPhone to recoup that cost plus some.

This sounds like a great idea, but, I want Verizon though so I can use my data as I please:

I don't know why you are not eligible for the $250 EUFee. Everyone I know is. The best way to find out why you are not is to call AT&T Corporate at (800) 403-3302, hit "0" and then "#." Ask for the Executive Offices and them tell the switchboard operator exactly what you are needing to know. Only they can determine why you have not yet been offered and $250 early upgrade fee.

Do I stand a chance if the text I'm getting when I dial *639# says: "You may select equipment at our full retail pricing. An upgrade may be available on: 05/08/2013." ?

This is the same message I get - full retail pricing:mad:. My 4s was purchased in November 2011 at the early upgrade price ($299 + $250 + $36). No late payments on my single phone plan at $ 94.99 per month plus a $34.99/mo. MIFI device. Haven't called ATT because A) I'm not sure I want the 5 or something else and B) I will prolly pay ETF and move to family's plan on Verizon for better LTE service in my area.

Hmm, I'm on a two line 700 min family plan (about $125/mo after taxes) and my upgrade is still showing May 08 2013, though last year I DID use an early upgrade. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I'm pretty sure I'll be off loading my 64Gig 4s, TomTom kit, and extended battery case so I can just go all out and buy a factory unlocked one. I'm kinda sick of being locked in to a provider and in my wishful dreaming I hope an LTE phone drops with full support for ATT & verizon LTE here in the US so we really can pick which every we want, lol

Logging onto at&t now prompts a pop-up asking if I want to check upgrade eligibility. Eligibility status there says "You are currently eligible for an upgrade at full retain price" even though my *639# says "We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade......" for $250. Yet another inconsistency with what at&t says.

I already replied to this a few posts above..

I just checked my upgrade eligibility on my at&t account online and I got this: "Great news! You qualify for an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-year commitment.
Full upgrade available: October 08, 2013"

I double checked by dialing *639# and got the same thing.

I Love AT&T, at Least for Tonight.

Like many of you, since I purchased the 4S last October (2011), my upgrade eligibility was quirky such as having to pay the extra $250 UG Fee unless I waited to May 8, 2013. Plus, I had to pay the $36 Early Upgrade Fee, as well. (By the way, I did confirm as I earlier stated today that my FAN 19% discount had nothing to do with the $250 fee.)

Tonight, I learned as I had posted earlier today that there was a way around the $250 fee, and I unhesitatingly took advantage of it. Although not necessary, this evening I signed up for AT&T Mobile Share. That alone dropped my billing from about $135 per month to $93--a savings of about $42 per month. I purchased the 1GB data plan since I use almost always Wi-Fi (retired and almost always at home).

Then I again confirmed how to get around the $250 early upgrade fee. I cross-upgraded by using my iPad phone number since that number has now passed the two-year contract (although I have my second iPad--the 2012 edition. On Wednesday, I am now free to upgrade to the iPhone 5 using the older iPad number which obviates the $250 early upgrade fee. Nicely, the phone numbers remain the same for each device.

Next since my billing for my unlimited talk minutes was a $20 option with my MicroCell, that $20 will drop off my bill since Mobile Share already includes unlimited dialing and texting.

When I purchased the new iPad in March, I unknowingly signed up for the iPad data plan to be post paid--meaning that rather than having that separate billed amount deducted from my checking account, it is included with the AT&T Mobility bill. By doing this, adding my iPad to the Mobile Share plan for $10 per month did not require me to obtain a new SIM card as currently pre-paid iPad customers will have to do; plus to $36 activation fee which would have otherwise been charged. Now, both my iPad and iPhone share the 1 GB of data.

Penultimately, for being a customer for well over 10 years, she not only waived the $36 early upgrade fee that every one will be billed for when buying the iPhone 5, she also pointed out that because my iPad charges are postpaid, I saved that additional $36 activation fee.

Finally, she gifted me a $50 credit toward my next bill because I was a long-time customer and for believing in AT&T's customer service. Add this to the $320 payment for my 4S from Gazelle.com, I might even come out ahead at least for my September bill. And, definitely will until the iPhone 5 debuts sometime in 2013.

SO, INSTEAD OF MY BILL THAT Will COME OUT ON THE 8TH, HAD NOTHING BEEN CHANGED MY would-have-been $159.40 BILL WILL BE $57 AND I DON'T HAVE TO PAY THE $250 EARLY UPGRADE FEE. THE SAVINGS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I hope everyone else will experience something very close to my nirvana-like experience I had tonight.

Since I got my iPhone 4s on launch day, I'm not eligible for a full discount. However, I'm eligible for an early upgrade price + $250) Which in other words basic iPhone 5 that's normally $199.99 comes out to $450+ tax which roughly comes out to $510 with taxes. I sold my iPhone 4s 32 gig for $650 a month ago. I basically get my iPhone for free if you think about it. Just a simple cycle gentlemen :D
