Well... I thought I could "live" with the yellow, but I just can't. Now that I have hidden the dock on the bottom so that my browser window can occupy the entire screen, I can REALLY see it now. It is most apparent when reading articles on a white screen. So, I'm sending it back. Only problem is that I have to wait for another BTO. I'm considering getting one from the store and living with a 5400 rpm drive...

that' funny!
you just gave me an idea how "not to deal with this" yellow tint
i deactivated the auto animate of the docks.
minimize the screen a bit..
viola!

i have done exchanges.. 9c66 then 9c81
i'm done. the Penryn MBP i have right now has 9c81 , aside from the yellowish hue, everything's working perfectly, hardware wise.
no dead nor lazy pixels as well

Same here, i just received my BTO and it has a very slight "white-yellow" tint at the bottom, this is my 2nd MBP to have it and i just dont care anymore, im tired of wasting time sending it back. Everything else about the computer is perfect.

Its actually kind of weird, the yellow doesnt go all the way across the bottom 1/3rd. Its like a quarter of a cirle on the left half of the bottom 1/3rd like this ______

Thats my messed up diagram lol, but that little "circle i drew the top most part of the circle is the top of the bottom 1/3rd of the screen and its like a quarter cirlcle lol. As you go across the bottom 1/3rd from left to right you can see its getting slightly whiter.

Ok my retarded diagram messed up, disregard the top square ontop of the bottom left because its just the bottom left of that diagram that actually exsists lol.

i see what you mean!:)
mine is similar to that.. mostly on the left side but not the whole bottom 3rd.

Ugh.. Sometimes I hate reading this forum! :)

I just took a much closer look at my 9c83 (comparing it to my iMac), and I definitely see the shadow issues and other things. Ugh, this is so frustrating because I hate to return and trade one problem for another.

I wish apple would release some nice calibration files for each panel. I think that'd be ideal.

What is this shadow issue? So 9C81 is the best panel for the Penryn MBPs it looks like...

Even though the 9C81 may be the best thats still not saying much. I have replaced 2 MBP's since the Penryns came out and my 3rd replacement which i got BTO also has this "white-yellow"

All 3 of the MBP's ive had were 9C81 and 2/3 of them had the white-yellow. The one that didnt have it had the very annoying Speaker buzz noise which i find more annoying than the "white-yellow."

Ima keep this one just telling myself that surely when i buy again in 3-4 years this will be fixed lol.

I have this yellowing issue also. The first one I got (15" 2.5GHz, 250GB HD, 9C81 screen) had this bad. Returned for another (15" 2.6GHz, 200GB HD 7200rpm, 9C83 screen) has it also but quite a bit less. But it's still there. The build quality on this second is much better in fit than the first, but the screen is just enough that everytime I think I can live with it, it starts to bug me again.

By comparison the screen on my MBA is perfect. Brighter than the MBP, even illumination, no yellowing at all.

Someone should really make a poll about how many people have yellow 1/3rd tint and who doesnt, it would make it easier for people to see their chances of getting one with the yellow.

Id do it but im to retarded to make a poll lol.

Well ive decided im going to call Apple tommorrow if they can replace the display of my MBP. I just want them to replace the display because the yellowing is the only thing wrong with it, im also going to ask them if they can test out the new display and check it for the yellow and dead pixels, because i dont want to have to keep going through this over and over again. The computer cost me $2800 and this problem just annoys me so badly.

I have the 9C81 screen with no bottom third yellowing. The default color profile was crap, all washed out and looked like urine. I just clicked the calibrate button and five minutes later I was looking at the most perfect laptop display I have ever seen. It's no match for my 20" ACD, but it's better than my 19" ViewSonic. Very slight shadowing near the bottom of the screen when showing complete white, but I have never seen a laptop that had perfectly uniform backlight illumination.

I just got a 2.4 15" Matte display today, and I have the yellow at the bottom. Not too sure how much it bothers me as I do most of my work on my Mac Pro and this is just for traveling and some basic work stuff. *shrug*

well update, i just got off the phone with the apple tech and they told me that they could exchange or fix it, i went for the fix instead of playing with the lottery exchange. The guy told me that its something with the logic board and how the LCD reads colors and like the logic board or something needs calibration to fix, he said this should fix it. You cant fix it by software, its all hardware.

I hope this thing works whatever the guy was telling me about the logic board or somthing needing calibrationg tweaks. It actually makes sense a little, how is it that LG, Samsung, and Chi Mei are all having this problem, but its only seems to be happening on Apple displays, it may actually be a problem with the logic boards or something. At least i hope lol.

My matte screen is 9c82. At normal viewing angles (a little more than 90 degrees) it looks about the same for top and bottom. When I lower my eye level it looks like there is a yellow hue (though my table is yellow-brown and it might affect the way I see it). When I raise my eye level it looks like both top and bottom are bluish with the bottom being of a deeper blue.

I gave up trying to find out if it is defective or not. I'll just continue to enjoy my MBP.

I wish I could believe that is has something to do with the logic board, but given that there are quite a few displays without yellowing and I assume the logicboards are the same and pretty consistent in their build, I just can't buy that story.

I don't understand - the Apple guy says it's the logic board but you're just going to replace the LCD? If his theory is correct, what will that do?

No the techs are going to tweak something with the logic board or w/e the guy was telling me, and then they will check to see if that fixed the problem. If it doesnt, they will replace the LCD and check the new one for the problem. This way atleast they check something before they send it back to me and im not playing the lottery.

The thing that makes me think it is w/e he was talking about is the fact that all 3 LCD manufacturers seem to be having the same problem, but its only with apple computers so the logic board is the common factor. Maybe some of the logic boards just need a few tweaks for some reason and this may be the problem. I just find it hard to believe that 3 LCD manufacturers are all having the same problem but its only for apple displays.

If everything else about the MBP is fine other than the screen, you should prolly just get the LCD changed. I say this because the MBP that i had w/o yellowing had a very annoying little buzz sound coming from the right speaker. So thers a chance your new MBP could have something wrong with it other than the LCD.

I have a 15 inch 9c83 penryn and it definitely has some yellow tint at the bottom. Its not terrible, but no doubt that its there.

Ugh. All of this nonsense is discouraging. I though from the first few reports that the penryn revision fixed the yellowing problem. Apparently not. I'm on the fence about buying again... Most people posting here returned their units 2-3 times, too.

It is discouraging as I am ready to switch to Mac from Windows. Now I'm paranoid this is going to ruin my 1st experience with Apple. The closest Apple store to me is 2 hours away.

Well, after a looong time debating, I drove 120 miles to an Apple Store and got my MBP today. It's a 9C82 Chi Mei.

It has the yellowing, and the whites are noticably duller at the bottom than the top. :(

I guess I'm going to have to do that 120 mile trip at least one more time...

next time, open the computer up and try it out before you drive the 2 hrs back home.

My screen has some definite yellow tinting and "dirtiness" on the bottom, so I had amazon send me a replacement. The replacement has a great screen. It seemed brighter, text was sharper, and there was minimal yellowish tinting on the bottom. However, the slot load drive wouldn't take any DVDs! DOH.

Time to give amzn another ring i guess...

Yeah, I will... I wanted to open it there and check this time, but I had to run as a family member had been taken to hospital so I just didn't have time - I hoped for the best, but I'm seldom lucky with buying stuff... oh well...

Awesome machine in every other respect too (although the superdrive seems quite noisy..)

At least amazon is very good to deal with! After dealing with Apple's BS return policies, I've sworn to only buy from amazon in the future. They've always gladly paid for return shipping and given me full refunds for any little defect within 30 days. With Apple you have to deal with geniuses who are less than geniuses and who always claim that everything is 'within spec". Hope you get a good one next time! Terrible as it sounds, since you got a good screen (much more difficult than getting a good Dvd drive), it might be worth having it repaired rather than risking another bad display?

I agree with PDE, get it repaired because getting a good screen is like a toss up.
