Attention new MBP owners: Please perform this Yellow tint test

I'm really disappointed Apple still haven't sorted this out. Been a known issue ever since they updated the MBP's to the Santa Rosa platform back in June 07.

I'm aiming to sell and update my MBP in June, they better have this problem sorted by then.

9c83 and yellow is evident near bottom of screen...

Apple store (Grove) will NOT exchange for this reason (without charging restocking fee). Nearly all cosmetic defects will be answered with "it's within spec".

You have been warned. Maybe it's better to wait until they get a new set of screens.

Try out Topanga in Canoga Park. I just got back from there and they took care of me!!! My appointment was at 6:30 but I got there early and they took me in at like 6:15. I was kinda shocked that I didn't have to do anything other than mention this problem and he agreed with me and got the manager's approval... they made note for my serial number and I'm going to call Apple Care tomorrow. Now I'll be computer-less again... oh well, this better resolve my problems! Good luck!

i made up my mind.

i'm keeping this even though it's within 14 days from purchase.
i don't want to play trial and error with some dead pixels, noise from the fans, bulging batteries, trackpad problems..
this is too much!!!
the reason we bought a piece of machine is to have a great equipment..
and not an excuse to go to apple store every now and then..
if i want to do that, i'll just date a genius

I just phoned with an apple technician an hour ago. They know the problem of the yellow tints and accepted an exchange.

I hope my next one will be 'perfect'...

I've just done the test on my new 15" 1.5GHz MBP - and I'm not sure if I can see a yellow tinge or not. I started to see something but then wondered if that image creates an optical illusion, or if I was 'looking for it'.

I changed the background to plain white and still couldn't really see a "distinctly yellow cast".

If I have it then I don't notice it so don't see any point in changing it!

The test website says that the effected models are MacBook Pro “Core 2 Duo” 2.2 15″ (SR) and MacBook Pro “Core 2 Duo” 2.4 15″ (SR) so I'm guessing the new ones are ok anyway??

In conclusion - I don't see it!!

Has anyone had this problem with a 17"? Did everyone buy theirs in a Apple store or were they ordered online.? i have not read this whole thread but it seems most of these are 15.4" glossy bought in store. Am I wrong?

it doesn't matter where you bought it.
nor whether it's matte or glossy.
the " alleged" problem is with the lcd itself.

The problem is (apparently) with LCDs that use LEDs as a backlight - until recently the 17" has not been an LED LCD (and even now it's a BTO option).

17" Hi-res matte. No screen yellowing here, though the screen is a little "brighter" towards the bottom. Is that normal?

I bought it online at the german apple education store.

So I'm returning my yellow tint mbp through the mail and I have a question. When does apple ship the replacement? Do they wait until the package gets all the way back to them or do they ship it when it is in Fedex's hands? I shipped my return this morning and my apple order status has not changed.

I shipped my return back on Friday (3/7) and my replacement shipped from Shangai Monday (3/10).

To expedite the process, the customer service rep told me once I dropped off the package at FedEx, to call apple with the tracking number (which I did) and they could verify that it is indeed in transit.

What happened??? :) I thought you had made up your mind not to return it......

I've got a 15" 2.5GHz matte with a perfect screen.

Manufacturer: 00000610
Model: 00009C81
Serial Number: 00000000
Manufacture Date: C1BDFF80

For those who are not sure they see it, or only see it with the test image, please run supercal and see if that helps. I did and I doesn't catch my attention like it did before. Hope that helps!

apple wins

Well i just came back from the apple store. I examined all 4 of the 15" macbook pros on display and noted the manufacturers of each panel (I didn't even check the 17" panel #s because they didn't seem to have the problem). 2 of the panels were 9c83 and both had the slight yellowing. 2 panels were 9c81 and one of these had a weird light bleed from the bottom left (very obvious) but neither had the yellow bs. Matte vs. glossy doesn't seem to weigh into the yellowing equation.
I had sent my BTO back for a refund and decided to try and get a good one from this store. After opening 2 MBPs that had 9c83 panels, I settled for one that had a somewhat lessened yellow tint. Now that I've got it home, I've noticed that the screen's enclosure is pinching the bottom right corner of the screen and makes it darker in this little spot. I'm going to keep it however because I don't have anymore time for this darn issue. You win Apple!

no color cast on my penryn 15" 2.4

I tried the test on my Penryn 2.4 15" 2GB 250GB, and there's no yellow cast. If anything I would say that the display is a tiny bit brighter toward the bottom third, but it may be my eyes playing tricks on me. Definitely no yellow, though. I do a lot of graphic design so I'm pretty attuned to color gradations. My LCD model number is listed as "09C83." Wonder who made this one? Also, Doing a blackscreen test, I have zero dead pixels (thankfully) and a tiny amount of light bleed, more on the bottom than on the top, but I've never seen an LCD larger than 3" that didn't have a bit of bleed.

Hope that's helpful.

sorry if this has already came up but, i just received my MB Pro bout 10 mins ago. Turned it on and went through the setup. I am worried tho because on the right hand side of my screen is a thin yellow line running from top to bottom, anyone else had this problem.
Its a 2.5 17inch widescreen.
Help!!!

After seeing the effect on my MBP against a dark background it eventually reminded me of what this problem is after seeing it appear on last years Sony XBRs.

These models are suffering from region-mura. This is a common defect in TFT LCD panels and it should be detected in QC. My guess is Apple are having such a large mura failure rate producing these panels that they have raised the pass level for mura to keep the yield high and the costs low, in the hope that more people accept it than don't.

"Mura (moo-rah’) is a Japanese word meaning blemish that has been adopted in English to providea name for imperfections of a display pixel matrix surface that are visible when the display screen is driven to a constant gray level. Mura defects appear as low contrast, non-uniform brightness regions, typically larger thansingle pixels. They are caused by a variety of physical factors. For example, in LCD displays, the causes of muradefects include non-uniformly distributed liquid crystal material and foreign particles within the liquid crystal"

A Google search for LCD mura will come up with a lot of technical reports about it.
